100 Day Dream Home Lawsuit: Rumors, Records, and Real Cases

There is no verified 100 Day Dream Home lawsuit on the public record. A search of the Hillsborough County Clerk of Court — the Florida jurisdiction where hosts Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt operate — turns up no active litigation against them or their company as of early 2026.¹ The show itself is still on HGTV, currently in its seventh season.²

Where the Rumors Come From

Several blogs and legal-commentary sites have published articles describing homeowner complaints supposedly tied to the show. The pattern is familiar: participants allegedly say the work didn’t meet building standards, that renovations were left unfinished after cameras stopped, and that the aggressive 100-day timeline forced contractors to cut corners.³ Named grievances include structural defects, plumbing failures, electrical problems, and finishes that reportedly fell apart soon after filming.

Some of these posts get specific. They name “Dirt Road Construction” as a defendant, reference a lawsuit filed in August 2023 in Hillsborough County, cite a motion to compel granted in May 2024, and describe complaints filed with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation between 2022 and 2023. One site claims HGTV cancelled the show in 2023 after three seasons because of legal trouble.

Each of those claims runs into a verifiable problem. The Hillsborough County court portal shows no docket matching those descriptions. No case number has been published. And the show wasn’t cancelled — Season 6 premiered in September 2025, and Season 7 has been airing in 2026, with its sixth episode broadcast on June 9, 2026.¹² No credible media outlet has reported litigation against the Kleinschmidts.

How to Check the Public Record Yourself

The Hillsborough County Clerk of Court runs a public portal called HOVER. Searching for “Kleinschmidt” or “Dirt 2 Design” as a party returns no results as of January 2026.¹ A real case in the Tampa Bay area would produce a caption in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, a docket number, and viewable filings. None of that exists here.

One detail worth flagging: the Kleinschmidts’ company is Dirt 2 Design LLC. The name “Dirt Road Construction” that appears in the unverified blog posts doesn’t match any entity connected to the show.

The Show Is Still on the Air

100 Day Dream Home premiered on HGTV in 2020 and has run continuously since. Season 6 debuted on September 16, 2025, and Season 7 is a 12-episode run currently airing.² The Kleinschmidts have said publicly they feel fortunate the series continues, noting that several other HGTV programs were cancelled during the summer of 2025.⁴ A network quietly dropping a show at the center of a real construction-defect scandal would be unusual; keeping it in production and greenlighting new seasons would be extraordinary.

Real HGTV Renovation Lawsuits That Do Exist

The rumors probably stick because homeowner suits against other HGTV productions are real. That history is worth knowing, if only to understand why every popular renovation show attracts these claims.

The most prominent example involves Property Brothers. In 2021, Paul and Mindy King of Las Vegas sued Cineflix, the show’s production company, alleging fraud, misrepresentation, and faulty workmanship after a 2019 renovation that cost more than $200,000. Their complaints included water intrusion, electrical code violations, and improperly installed gas lines.⁵ The Nevada State Contractors Board declined to intervene, saying the Kings were ineligible for the state’s residential recovery fund because the work was done for “TV purposes.”⁶ A jury trial was scheduled for October 2024.⁷

Deena Murphy and Timothy Sullivan sued Big Coat TV, the production company behind Love It or List It, and their local North Carolina contractor in 2016. They alleged “disastrous” renovations, mismanaged funds from a $140,000 budget, and claimed the person portrayed as the general contractor was not licensed to work in North Carolina. Their complaint described the production company as being in the business of television rather than construction, effectively using homeowner money to build a “stage set.”⁸

Participants on Renovation Impossible have reported similar problems, with one couple alleging that a $75,000 kitchen and bathroom project turned into a $150,000 loss and left safety hazards including a bathtub backed by exposed electrical wiring.⁵

None of those cases involve 100 Day Dream Home, its hosts, or Dirt 2 Design.

If You Ever Are a Renovation Show Participant

Participants almost always sign broad release agreements before filming. These waive claims against the production company, the network, and affiliated parties, and grant the production wide rights over the property. They often leave out any clear answer about who fixes defects discovered after filming ends.³

Those waivers have limits. In Florida, the Building Code sets construction-quality standards that homeowners cannot contractually waive, because they exist for public safety. Courts in multiple jurisdictions have found that release agreements attempting to shield contractors from liability for defective work or code violations may be unconscionable or contrary to public policy. Florida law also requires homeowners to follow a specific notice-and-cure process under Chapter 558 of the Florida Statutes, giving the contractor written notice of defects and an opportunity to repair them, before a construction defect suit can proceed.³

Suing a network like HGTV directly is harder. Network liability is generally difficult to establish unless the network was a party to the construction contract or made specific, actionable representations about the quality of the work. In the documented cases, defendants have been production companies and contractors, not the network. Florida’s statute of limitations for construction defect claims is generally four years from when the defect was or should have been discovered, with a ten-year statute of repose as an outer boundary.
