In the weeks between the November 13, 2022 stabbings of four University of Idaho students and Bryan Kohberger’s arrest on December 30, 2022, anonymous message boards including 4chan became a hub of speculation about the Idaho 4 murders. Users posted personal information about Moscow-area residents, named their own “unofficial suspects,” and pushed theories that reached millions of people. Almost none of it held up. The single theory that has clung to the case the longest — that Kohberger himself posted under the Facebook alias “Pappa Rodger” — was publicly debunked by investigators on the day of his sentencing.
The victims were Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. Kohberger, a criminology PhD student at Washington State University, pleaded guilty to all four murders and to burglary in July 2025 and received four consecutive fixed life sentences without the possibility of parole.
What 4chan and Anonymous Forums Actually Did
NBC News described activity during the investigation on a “wholly anonymous online message forum best known as a source of hoaxes, scandals and misinformation,” a description that lines up with 4chan. Users on that forum and on true-crime communities elsewhere published personal information of Moscow residents in order to label them as suspects.1NBC New York. The list of people wrongly accused was long. A man captured on food-truck surveillance video wearing a white hoodie was tagged as an “unofficial suspect” with no evidence at all. Friends of the victims, including Hunter Johnson and Emily Alandt, were repeatedly accused of committing the murders. Madison Mogen’s mother, Karen Laramie, was “hounded by wannabe detectives.” Uninvolved University of Idaho students were stalked and harassed, and some went into hiding.2ABC 33/40. The surviving roommates, Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, drew some of the most sustained abuse. Online communities fixated on the roughly eight-hour gap between the killings and Funke’s 911 call at 11:56 a.m. Defense filings made public later showed that after a frightened text exchange around 4:22 a.m. — Mortensen saying she saw a man in a ski mask, Funke telling her to “Run” — both roommates stayed in the house and used their phones intermittently through the morning. Funke called her father at 7:30 a.m. Mortensen texted Goncalves and Mogen at 10:23 a.m. asking “R u up??”3ABC 11. None of that context slowed the forums down. At the sentencing hearing, Funke’s statement, read by a friend, revealed she remained “sick with guilt” over surviving and had slept in her parents’ room for nearly a year afterward.5ABC News. The Pappa Rodger Theory
The theory that stuck longest, and the one most closely associated with the anonymous-forum ecosystem around this case, involved a Facebook account using the alias “Pappa Rodger.” The account posted in a group discussing the murders and, according to online sleuths, appeared to know about the knife sheath left at the scene before that detail became public. Sleuths noted the account was active immediately after the killings and went silent after Kohberger’s arrest, and they concluded the two facts had to be connected.6Fox News. Investigators addressed the theory directly at a press conference on the day of Kohberger’s sentencing. “There was no connection. There wasn’t at all. We looked into every bit of it. We took a deep dive into it. We researched it,” they said. Asked whether the account belonged to Kohberger, they answered: “It wasn’t him.”7KIVI. That statement remains the definitive word on the question. The account was not Kohberger’s.
The Other Theories That Spread
The Pappa Rodger claim was only the most durable. Online communities also pushed, incorrectly, that the four students had died from drug overdoses, from a robbery, or at the hands of random visitors in town for a football game. Many friends and family members deleted their social media accounts or set them to private in response. None of these theories described what actually happened. According to the probable cause affidavit, Kohberger entered the King Road house through a kitchen sliding door just after 4:00 a.m. on November 13. He went to the third floor, stabbed Mogen and Goncalves in their beds, then killed Kernodle and Chapin on the way out.8ABC News. Idaho College Murders Timeline of Events
Did Any of the Online Sleuthing Actually Help
One narrow answer is yes. After police publicized their search for a white Hyundai Elantra, online forums generated tips that fed into the work of sorting through 22,000 registered vehicles of that model.1NBC New York. What Actually Identified Kohberger
The evidence that led to Kohberger came from police work, not from message boards. Investigators recovered a tan leather knife sheath with Ka-Bar and U.S. Marine Corps markings next to one of the victims. DNA testing found a single male profile on the sheath’s button snap. Through investigative genetic genealogy, the profile was run against public ancestry databases and produced a list of possible suspects. Investigators then tracked Kohberger to his parents’ home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, and recovered DNA from the family’s trash on December 27, 2022. Surveillance footage independently confirmed the vehicle. An FBI examiner reviewed video from more than 17 locations in Moscow and Pullman and identified the car making three passes by the house between roughly 3:29 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. as a fifth-generation Hyundai Elantra, model years 2014 to 2016. The car had no front license plate; Kohberger’s Elantra was registered in Pennsylvania at the time, a state that did not require one, and he re-registered it in Washington five days after the murders.10The Columbian. Cellphone records added the final layer. Kohberger’s phone had been detected near the victims’ home at least 12 times between June and November 2022, mostly during late-night and early-morning hours. On the morning of the killings, the phone went dark near his Pullman home at 2:47 a.m. and did not reconnect until 4:48 a.m. near Blaine, Idaho. None of those threads came from a forum. Investigators had chosen to say very little to the public while the case developed. Moscow Police Chief Jason Fry was criticized for first telling the community there was “no threat” and then walking that back, and families of the victims openly expressed frustration at the silence. Experts later described the choice as taking public criticism “on the chin” to keep from tipping off the suspect.13ABC 7 Chicago. Consequences and Warnings
In December 2022, Moscow police warned that charges could be brought against online harassers if the conduct continued. Captain Roger Lanier described what was happening as a “revictimization” of people who had already suffered “terrible trauma.”1NBC New York. The volume and reach of the online activity also shaped the case in a concrete legal way. In September 2024, Latah County District Court Judge John Judge granted a change of venue, citing extensive media coverage, social media misinformation, and the impossibility of seating an impartial jury in Moscow. Kohberger eventually pleaded guilty to all five counts on July 2, 2025, and was sentenced on July 23, 2025, to four consecutive fixed life sentences plus 10 years for burglary. Under Idaho law, fixed life means no parole. Asked at sentencing whether he wished to speak, Kohberger replied: “I respectfully decline.”17BBC.
