$8.5 Million Dollar General Settlement: Payouts and $3 Discount

The $8.5 million Dollar General settlement resolved a nationwide class action, Braun v. Dolgencorp LLC, alleging the discount chain routinely charged customers more at the register than the price shown on the shelf. It covered purchases at any U.S. Dollar General store between October 10, 2016, and November 19, 2025. The settlement is now closed: the claim deadline passed on April 13, 2026, the court granted final approval on March 19, 2026, and the two-day in-store discount ran on June 1–2, 2026.¹²

What the Lawsuit Alleged

The class action accused Dollar General of a widespread pattern in which merchandise was labeled at one price on the shelf but rang up higher at checkout. Consumer advocates noted that nearly all pricing discrepancies favored the company rather than the customer, which they argued pointed to a structural issue rather than random scanner errors. Attorney Marc Dann, whose firm helped bring the case, estimated the overcharges across Dollar General’s roughly 19,000 stores could total $100 million per year.³

The complaint also alleged Dollar General failed federal and state weights-and-measures standards at an average rate of about 20 percent, blaming chronic understaffing and inventory problems that left stores carrying goods with outdated price labels.³ Dollar General did not admit wrongdoing, fault, or liability.⁴

Who Qualified and What They Could Get

The settlement class included every U.S. consumer who paid more (or less) than the advertised shelf price at any Dollar General store during the roughly nine-year eligibility window.⁵ The benefits split into two tiers.

Cash Payments for Documented Overcharges

Class members who could show proof of a price overcharge were eligible for $10 or the actual overcharge amount, whichever was higher. Acceptable proof included documentation of a complaint filed with a government agency or with Dollar General, or objective contemporaneous evidence such as a dated photo of the shelf price paired with a matching receipt.¹ Each household could file up to two separate overcharge claims, capping cash recovery at $20 per household.²

A $3 In-Store Discount for Everyone Else

Every class member, whether or not they had proof of an overcharge, was eligible for a $3 discount on the first $10 of any purchase of at least $10 (pre-tax) at any Dollar General store. The discount was limited to one per person and could only be used during a two-day window on June 1–2, 2026.¹ That window has now closed.

Changes Dollar General Agreed to Make

The total settlement value was $15 million: an $8.5 million cash fund plus at least $6.5 million in injunctive relief. Beginning June 1, 2025, Dollar General committed to a two-year compliance program requiring dedicated Tuesday-morning employee hours for shelf price changes, pricing audits by district managers during store visits, and independent audits by a third-party firm. The company must also employ at least one full-time worker responsible for tracking weights-and-measures inspection reports, with bimonthly reports on failed inspections sent to divisional vice presidents.⁴

Key Dates and Case Information

The case was filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Middlesex County, under docket number MID-L-00950-25, with Jennifer Braun as the lead named plaintiff.²⁵ The class period ran from October 10, 2016, to November 19, 2025.

March 2, 2026: Deadline to opt out or object.⁵
March 19, 2026: Final fairness hearing; the court granted final approval.²
April 13, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern: Claim filing deadline.⁶
June 1–2, 2026: In-store discount redemption window.¹

Late claims are not accepted. If you did not submit a claim by April 13, 2026, you are no longer eligible for a cash payment from this settlement, and the June discount window has ended.

If You Already Filed a Claim

Under the settlement terms, Dollar General was required to deposit the funds into escrow within 30 days of final approval. No public information is yet available on how many claims were filed or when payments will be mailed. Any uncashed checks will be donated to a national food bank organization agreed on by both sides.²
