Afeni Muhammad Case: Bond, Competency, and Trial Date

The Afeni Muhammad case is a Michigan first-degree murder prosecution against a 27-year-old former McDonald’s employee accused of fatally stabbing her shift manager, Jennifer Harris, at an Eastpointe restaurant on July 10, 2025. Muhammad is held in the Macomb County Jail on a $25 million bond, and her jury trial is scheduled to begin September 15, 2026, before Macomb County Circuit Judge James M. Maceroni.¹

What Happened at the Eastpointe McDonald’s

On the morning of July 10, 2025, Harris, a 39-year-old shift manager at the McDonald’s on Nine Mile Road, sent Muhammad home before the end of her scheduled shift for not performing her duties.² According to witness testimony at the preliminary hearing, Muhammad was angry about being clocked out and told Harris, “You reap what you sow. You better watch your back. I’ll be back.”³

Prosecutors say Muhammad drove to a nearby park, then returned to the restaurant shortly before 8 a.m. with a kitchen knife from her vehicle, entering through the employee entrance while wearing a hooded mask. She then attacked Harris, stabbing her repeatedly. Evidence at the preliminary hearing indicated Harris was stabbed as many as 23 times.⁴ Police also said Muhammad had posted Instagram videos before the attack calling Harris a “bully” and threatening that “that [expletive] is going to catch up to her.”⁵ Harris was taken to a hospital, where she died.⁶

The Bystander Who Held Her at Gunpoint

DeVonte Pace, a 31-year-old Eastpointe resident and licensed concealed pistol carrier, was in the drive-through line when he saw the attack. He fired a warning shot into the air, and when Muhammad dropped the knife and tried to reach her car, Pace chased her around the building and held her at gunpoint until Eastpointe police arrived. In his own account: “I saw someone with a hooded mask stabbing another lady in the neck. I took off running and running around the other side of the building. I drew down on her again. And she said, okay I give up. Don’t shoot me.”⁶

Charges and $25 Million Bond

Muhammad was arraigned on July 11, 2025, in the 38th District Court before Judge Kathleen G. Galen. She faces first-degree premeditated murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole, and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, a five-year felony. She is also charged as a habitual offender based on a prior felony conviction.⁷⁸

Muhammad stood mute at arraignment, and a not-guilty plea was entered on her behalf. Judge Galen set bond at $25 million, cash or surety only, citing flight risk and danger to the community. If posted, conditions would include a steel cuff tether, daily reporting, drug and alcohol testing, no contact with Harris’s family, and a ban from returning to the McDonald’s.⁷

A Prior Stabbing Conviction in Virginia

The habitual offender charge is based on a 2022 felony conviction in Alexandria, Virginia. Muhammad was arrested on January 11, 2022, for stabbing her then-boyfriend. A jury found she had unlawfully stabbed, cut, and wounded the victim with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable, and kill. On April 28, 2022, she pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and received a four-year suspended sentence, avoiding prison time on the condition of good behavior for four years, one year of supervised probation with substance abuse counseling and testing, compliance with a protective order, enrollment in a batterer’s intervention program, and payment of court costs.⁹ Whether she completed the batterer’s intervention program before the 2025 killing has not been publicly reported.

Competency Finding and Preliminary Hearing

At a hearing on July 23, 2025, the court referred Muhammad for a competency examination and a criminal responsibility review after her attorney, Joshua Jones, raised concerns about her mental state. Muhammad herself objected to the evaluation.¹⁰ A psychiatrist from the Michigan Forensic Center interviewed her, and by October 2025 she was found competent to stand trial.⁴

The preliminary examination was held on November 14, 2025, before Judge Galen. Prosecutors played surveillance footage of the attack and body camera footage of Muhammad in the parking lot with blood on her clothing. Coworker Khashana Turnage testified that Muhammad had been sent home for not doing her job and had threatened Harris before leaving. Employee Debra McMillan testified she saw Muhammad holding a knife while Harris lay in a pool of blood, and recalled Harris’s last words: “Deb, please don’t let me die.” Luke Moreno testified that Muhammad entered through the storage bay and told him “hi, I work here” before pulling an item from her bag. Pace testified about the intervention. Prosecutors also played video of Muhammad in police custody saying, “I felt like I wanted her dead.”³¹¹

Judge Galen found there was “more than sufficient” evidence to bind Muhammad over for trial. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said “the evidence presented to the court was compelling enough to bind this defendant over for trial.”¹²

Trial Date and What Comes Next

Muhammad was arraigned in Macomb County Circuit Court on December 2, 2025, before Judge Maceroni. After a pretrial hearing on March 24, 2026, Judge Maceroni set the jury trial for September 15, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.¹ As of that March hearing, the court had not received a criminal responsibility report from a state psychologist, which could form the basis for an insanity defense; no such defense has been publicly announced.¹³ Muhammad remains in the Macomb County Jail.

Who Jennifer Harris Was

Harris was a 39-year-old single mother of six from Mt. Clemens. Known to friends and family as “Jamma,” she had worked at the Eastpointe McDonald’s for 15 years.¹⁴ Her daughter Antonia Griffin said, “She was the best mom anybody could ever ask for. My mama, she woke up every day and went to work for us. My mama died trying to take care of us.”¹⁵ Franchise owner Yusef Alcodray covered Harris’s funeral expenses and, with Divine Restoration Ministries, established the Jennifer Harris Legacy Fund to support her six children.¹⁶
