Akira Stein: Her Death, the Pill Network, and Federal Charges

Akira Stein was the 19-year-old daughter of Blondie guitarist Chris Stein and actress Barbara Sicuranza who died on May 30, 2023, after taking counterfeit prescription pills laced with fentanyl at her family’s apartment in downtown Manhattan.¹ More than two years later, in October 2025, federal prosecutors in Manhattan indicted five men on charges tied to her death and the overdose deaths of two other 19-year-olds, one of them Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, the grandson of Robert De Niro.

Who Akira Stein Was

Akira grew up in Manhattan with her older sister Valentina, known as Vali. Debbie Harry, Blondie’s lead singer and Chris Stein’s longtime creative partner, was her godmother. Harry later recalled that Akira and Vali would stand at the side of the stage as small children with their faces made up to look like hers, dancing along.²

Her father described her as “wonderful and a bright place in the world” and acknowledged that she had been struggling with addiction for several years before she died.³ According to prosecutors, she had suffered multiple non-fatal overdoses in the months leading up to May 2023 and had been buying pills during that period from two of the men later charged in her death.¹

How She Died

Akira died on May 30, 2023, after taking pills she had purchased the day before from brothers John Nicolas and Roy Nicolas. Prosecutors say the brothers had sold her fentanyl-laced counterfeit opioid pills on numerous occasions over the preceding six months.¹ The pills were designed to look like legitimate prescription opioids but contained fentanyl, a synthetic opioid many times more potent than heroin.

The family did not announce her death publicly until July 2023, about two months later. Chris Stein wrote on Facebook that “addiction took her,” urged young people to “avoid this trap,” and asked followers to “be kind to each other.”⁴ He added: “Barbara, Vali and I are moving ahead but there’s a huge piece missing from our lives.”³

The Distribution Network Behind the Pills

Federal investigators traced Akira’s death to a broader operation that distributed thousands of counterfeit prescription opioid pills laced with fentanyl to teenagers and young adults in New York City and Long Island between January and July 2023.¹ According to the indictment, the network ran through three overlapping drug businesses linked by two shared distributors identified only as “CC-1” and “CC-2.” Akira bought her pills from the Nicolas brothers. Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, who died on July 2, 2023, bought his from CC-1, who in turn was supplied by three of the other charged defendants: Grant McIver, Bruce Epperson, and Eddie Barreto. A third victim, identified only as “Victim-2,” died on June 13, 2023, from pills traced to the same supply chain.

The sellers reached buyers through Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram, often using coded messages aimed at younger customers.⁵ Leandro was found unconscious at a residence on Wall Street; the medical examiner attributed his death to a combination of fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine.⁶

The Federal Charges

On October 30, 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York unsealed an indictment charging five men with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl, para-fluorofentanyl, and alprazolam, resulting in the deaths of three victims. The defendants are:

Grant McIver, also known as “Dizzy”
John Nicolas, also known as “John John”
Roy Nicolas

The charge carries a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of life.¹ Under federal law, when a drug distribution offense results in death, that 20-year minimum applies regardless of the quantity involved, and a prior qualifying drug or violent felony conviction can push the minimum up to life.⁷

A sixth person, Sofia Marks, known as the “Percocet Princess,” had already been charged separately in 2023 with selling the drugs that killed Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez.⁸ Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said the arrests reflected a “continued commitment” to stopping fentanyl from reaching New York streets, focused on dealers who exploit young users.⁹

Where the Case Stands

All five defendants were presented before federal magistrate judges between October 27 and October 29, 2025, in the districts where they were arrested. Four of them, Epperson, McIver, John Nicolas, and Roy Nicolas, were ordered detained.¹ The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos in the Southern District of New York.

Court records show a formal arraignment took place on November 19, 2025, at which pleas were entered, though the specific pleas are not detailed in the public docket. A protective order governing discovery was entered in February 2026, and a status conference was held on March 6, 2026.¹⁰ No trial date has been publicly set, and no convictions or sentences have been reported as of mid-2026. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys William Kinder, Matthew J. King, and Dana McCann of the Narcotics Unit.¹

What Akira’s Family Has Said

After the arrests were announced, Chris Stein posted on Instagram: “Arrests have been made and announced today in Akira’s case. The DEA, US Attorney folks from the NYC Southern District and NYPD have been very sympathetic and respectful all this process and I can’t thank them enough for this hope of some justice for her. Please be careful.”⁹

In his 2024 memoir Under a Rock, Stein called Akira’s death “the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with” and wrote about his own history of heavy opiate and cocaine use, expressing guilt that his past drug experiences may have been “misconstrued” by his children despite his efforts to present them negatively.³ In a later interview he said: “It’s just tragic and crazy what’s going on, and nobody seems to be doing anything about it. Certainly not the government.”¹¹

Debbie Harry paid tribute on Instagram in July 2023, writing that she would “grieve for the rest of my life” and warning that fentanyl is “too dangerous yet seductive and too easy to get. Beware.” She said she sometimes felt Akira’s presence while performing, “just like when she was a little girl.”²
