Alex Jackson of Iowa: Staged Intruder Story, Trial, and Appeal

Alex Jackson is a former University of Iowa student from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who was convicted in January 2023 of three counts of first-degree murder for fatally shooting his father Jan, his mother Melissa, and his 19-year-old sister Sabrina inside the family home on June 15, 2021, then staging the scene and telling police a masked intruder had done it. He is serving three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole at the Iowa State Penitentiary, and the Iowa Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction in January 2025.¹

What Happened on June 15, 2021

Shortly after sunrise, Alexander Jackson called 911 from his parents’ house at 4414 Oak Leaf Court Northeast in Cedar Rapids. The call ran about fifteen minutes. He told the dispatcher, “Someone broke into our house… I’ve been shot. My other family members been shot I need help immediately.”²

Officers arrived expecting an active home invasion. Instead they found Jan Jackson, 61, Melissa Jackson, 68, and Sabrina Jackson, 19, dead in separate rooms of the house, each with multiple gunshot wounds. Alexander, then 20, was alive with a gunshot wound to his foot. He described the attacker as a tall Black man in all black clothing, a ski mask, gloves, and green shoes, and said he had wrestled with the intruder over a .22 caliber Browning semi-automatic rifle that he and his father had left on the fireplace mantel the night before after cleaning it.³⁴

Why the Intruder Story Fell Apart

The physical evidence at the house did not match Jackson’s account. There were no signs of forced entry, nothing was taken, and a review of neighborhood surveillance cameras produced no footage of anyone approaching or leaving the residence.³

Investigators found the murder weapon stored in a box under Alexander’s bed. Ballistics confirmed the .22 rifle had killed all three victims, and two of Alexander’s palm prints were recovered from it.⁵ Prosecutors pointed to bloody footprints leading out of Alexander’s bedroom as evidence that he had gone in there and shot himself in the foot after killing his family, which contradicted his claim that he had only walked to the bedroom to grab a phone and call 911.³ He had no defensive wounds.⁶

The Motive Prosecutors Presented

Jan Jackson had recently told his son he needed to get a job or move out. Alexander was failing most of his University of Iowa classes and carrying a 1.59 grade point average, and he had about $30 in his bank account.⁷³ Assistant Linn County Attorney Monica Slaughter told the court Jan had told his son to “stop gaming and grow up and get a job” because he was not living up to expectations.⁴

The Victims

Jan Perry Jackson and Melissa Ferne Jackson lived with both of their children on Oak Leaf Court. Sabrina Hana Jackson had graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids in 2020 and was studying Japanese at the University of Iowa; in high school she played oboe in honors band and was involved in speech, JFK Young Democrats, and a Japanese exchange program.⁸⁹ The family had once volunteered together on Alexander’s own Eagle Scout project in 2017, painting a home preserved as affordable housing by the Cedar Rapids nonprofit Save CR Heritage.¹⁰

The Trial

Jackson was tried in Linn County District Court before Judge Lars G. Anderson on three counts of first-degree murder.¹¹¹⁶

The defense stood by the intruder account and argued that police had failed to seriously investigate an outside perpetrator. Defense attorney Lindsay Garner also called her client the “fourth victim,” pointing to a hospital interrogation conducted while he was injured and had been given fentanyl.² The court admitted the interview recordings with a limiting instruction telling jurors the investigators’ questions were not themselves evidence.⁶

The jury received the case around midday and returned the next morning with guilty verdicts on all three counts.¹²

The Sentence

On March 3, 2023, Judge Anderson sentenced Jackson to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, citing the “horrific nature” of the murders and reasoning that “each respective murder involved a separate and discreet event.”¹³ The court also ordered $450,000 in restitution and a DNA sample, and denied a defense motion for a new trial based on an allegation that a juror had overheard others discussing the case.¹⁴

Jackson declined to speak, and no family members gave victim impact statements at the hearing. After the earlier verdict, cousin Danielle Jackson-Parsons said, “Alex wanted the world to think he was a victim of this horrendous crime. But we know that is not the case.”¹⁵

The Appeal

Jackson appealed, arguing that the evidence was insufficient, that jury instructions on police interrogation techniques were inadequate, that the interview videos should have been excluded, and that officer testimony repeating what neighbors and construction workers had said was hearsay. On January 9, 2025, a three-judge Iowa Court of Appeals panel unanimously affirmed the conviction, with Judge Ahlers writing that the evidence of guilt was “overwhelming.”¹ The panel agreed the officer testimony repeating neighbors’ statements was inadmissible hearsay but found the error harmless given the strength of the remaining evidence.⁶

Where He Is Now

Alexander Ken Jackson, Iowa Department of Corrections offender number 6316129, is incarcerated at the Iowa State Penitentiary with a commitment date of March 7, 2023.¹⁶ With the Court of Appeals having affirmed his conviction, no further appellate proceedings appear to be pending.
