Allexis Ferrell is a 27-year-old Canton, Ohio woman who was sentenced in December 2024 to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to killing and eating a cat outside a public housing complex. Her August 2024 arrest drew national attention after the bodycam footage was falsely repackaged online as proof that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets, a claim local and state officials repeatedly debunked.
What Happened in Canton
On the night of August 16, 2024, Canton police were called to a housing complex in the 1100 block of 13th Street SE. According to the police report, Ferrell had stomped on a cat’s head to kill it and then began eating the animal in front of neighbors.1WOWT. The Plea and Mental Health Evaluation
Ferrell initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The court ordered a competency evaluation through the Psycho-Diagnostic Clinic of Akron, which found that she was capable of understanding the proceedings and assisting in her own defense.4Canton Repository. Her attorney, Stephen J. Kandel, told the court that substance abuse was central to the case, describing “an issue with drugs and alcohol, through her evaluation, through her past history.” Ferrell wrote letters to the judge and spoke in court asking for drug and alcohol treatment.5USA Today. The 30-Month Sentence
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank Forchione sentenced Ferrell on December 2, 2024. She received 12 months for the animal cruelty conviction.2BBC News. He added 18 months for a 2023 felony conviction for endangering children and six months for a 2019 theft and misuse of credit cards case, with the theft sentence running concurrently. The total came to 30 months.3FOX 8 Cleveland. Local Woman Sentenced for Killing, Eating Cat
From the bench, Forchione told Ferrell, “I can’t express the disappointment, shock, disgust that this crime has brought to me. I don’t know what could prompt anyone to want to eat a cat.” He called the act “repulsive,” said she was “quite a danger to our community,” and added, “You’ve embarrassed this county. You’ve embarrassed this nation. More importantly, you’ve embarrassed yourself.” He said she had “learned virtually nothing” from earlier encounters with the criminal justice system, but indicated that if she showed personal improvement in prison, he would allow her to serve the final six months at the Stark Regional Community Correction Center, where she could receive drug and alcohol treatment.4Canton Repository. Why Her Name Went National
Within days of the arrest, Ferrell’s bodycam footage was repackaged in a viral video titled “Haitian Woman Eats Neighbour’s Cat in Springfield.” She is not Haitian. She is a U.S. citizen born in Ohio, and the incident happened in Canton, roughly 170 miles from Springfield.6Canton Repository.
