Allison Mack is the former Smallville actress who became a top lieutenant to Keith Raniere inside NXIVM, the Albany-based group federal prosecutors described as a criminal enterprise. In April 2019, she pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy for her role in DOS, a secret sub-group in which she recruited women, collected compromising “collateral” from them, and steered them into sexual servitude to Raniere. She was sentenced to three years in federal prison in June 2021, served roughly 21 months, and was released in July 2023 under the First Step Act.
From Smallville to Albany
Mack played Chloe Sullivan on Smallville for all ten seasons, from 2001 to 2011.1People. She went in deep. Mack required her professional team to enroll in NXIVM classes and pushed her parents to do the same.1People. What She Did Inside DOS
DOS operated as a pyramid of “masters” and “slaves.” Raniere sat at the top. Mack was a first-line master directly beneath him.3U.S. Department of Justice. To join, a recruit had to hand over “collateral”: nude photographs, financial assets, or damaging information about herself or her family. That material was held over her to enforce silence and obedience. Women in DOS were kept on near-starvation diets, told to photograph their food and ask permission before eating, and subjected to strict behavioral controls.4Variety. According to the federal indictment, Mack explicitly or implicitly required her slaves to have sex with Raniere, and she received financial and other benefits from him in return. Victims believed their collateral would be released publicly if they refused or tried to leave.3U.S. Department of Justice. Federal Charges and Guilty Plea
Mack was arrested on April 20, 2018, and arraigned in the Eastern District of New York.3U.S. Department of Justice. On April 8, 2019, Mack pleaded guilty to two counts of an 11-count superseding indictment: racketeering conspiracy and racketeering.7GovInfo. United States v. Raniere, Judgment She admitted to extortion and forced labor of two victims (identified as Jane Doe 5 and Jane Doe 8), wire fraud of lower-ranking DOS members, and conduct underlying the sex trafficking of Jane Doe 5. Beginning a week before her plea, Mack cooperated. She sat for multiple proffer sessions, providing information about other DOS masters, Raniere’s control of the organization, and co-defendant Clare Bronfman’s efforts to harass victims and investigate critics.9Courthouse News Service. Government Sentencing Memo – Allison Mack She also turned over a recording of a conversation with Raniere in which he discussed the branding ceremony and instructed that victims should say “please brand me it would be an honor” so the ritual would not “seem like they are being coerced.”10Times Union. Sentencing
The advisory sentencing guidelines called for 168 to 210 months (14 to 17.5 years).9Courthouse News Service. Government Sentencing Memo – Allison Mack Prosecutors asked the court to go well below that range, citing her “substantial assistance.”
On June 30, 2021, U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentenced Mack to three years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $20,000 fine.11CNN. Allison Mack Sentencing Garaufis called her “an essential accomplice” and a “willing and proactive ally” of Raniere while acknowledging, “I don’t doubt that you were manipulated and also felt captive.” Supervised release conditions barred her from contact with anyone affiliated with NXIVM or DOS, required a mental health evaluation and treatment as needed, and imposed 1,000 hours of community service.12Courthouse News Service. Mack addressed the court, expressing “overwhelming shame” and calling her devotion to Raniere “the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life.”13Variety. Prison and Release Under the First Step Act
Mack reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, in September 2021.1People. Where Is Allison Mack Today She was released on July 3, 2023, after roughly 21 months.14BBC. Where the Rest of NXIVM’s Inner Circle Landed
Mack’s case sat inside a larger prosecution that dismantled Raniere’s inner circle. In June 2019, a jury convicted Raniere of racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy, and wire fraud conspiracy. Judge Garaufis sentenced him to 120 years in prison and a $1.75 million fine on October 27, 2020.16U.S. Department of Justice. - Lauren Salzman, a first-line DOS master, pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy and received five years of probation and 300 hours of community service on July 28, 2021, after what the government called “extraordinary” cooperation, including four days of testimony at Raniere’s trial.20CNBC. The Civil Lawsuit Against Her
The criminal case is over, but a civil one is not. In January 2020, more than 80 former NXIVM members sued Raniere, Mack, and 13 other individuals and corporate entities in the Eastern District of New York. Edmondson v. In a September 2024 ruling, the court granted motions to dismiss certain defendants and claims in part, but Mack, Raniere, Russell, and the NXIVM corporate entities had failed to appear. Life After Prison and the 2025 Podcast
Since her release, Mack has enrolled at Long Beach City College and, according to multiple reports, remarried. She got engaged around Christmas 2024 to a man named Frank whom she met at a dog park after leaving prison.1People. On November 10, 2025, the seven-episode CBC podcast Allison After NXIVM premiered as part of the network’s Uncover series, hosted by journalist Natalie Robehmed and produced by Vanessa Grigoriadis of Campside Media.27Rolling Stone. Across the episodes, Mack described herself as both a victim of Raniere and a perpetrator who hurt others. She called herself “emotionally aggressive” and “callous” and characterized the sexual dynamics inside DOS bluntly: “The coercion started, and the pressure and the pressure and the pressure. And then it was, like, rape.”28The Guardian. The podcast drew criticism for giving a convicted felon a platform. Producers said Mack was not paid, had no editorial oversight, and faced aggressive questioning.25Variety.
