Allison Mack’s NXIVM Case: Guilty Plea, Sentence, and Release

Allison Mack, the former Smallville actress, pleaded guilty in April 2019 to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy for her role as a top lieutenant in NXIVM’s secret subgroup DOS, was sentenced in June 2021 to three years in federal prison, and was released in July 2023 after serving roughly 21 months. The Allison Mack NXIVM case turned on her work recruiting and controlling women for the group’s leader, Keith Raniere, and on the cooperation she later gave prosecutors that helped convict him.¹²³

How Mack Ended Up Inside NXIVM

Mack played Chloe Sullivan on Smallville for all ten seasons through 2011.⁴ She was introduced to NXIVM in 2006 by castmate Kristin Kreuk, who invited her to what was described as a life coaching course. Mack traveled to Albany, met co-founder Nancy Salzman and then Keith Raniere, and over the next decade rose to become one of Raniere’s closest associates.⁵

Her Role in DOS

The criminal case centered on DOS, short for “Dominus Obsequious Sororium,” a secret all-female subgroup Raniere ran as an undisclosed “grandmaster.” Mack sat directly beneath him as a “first-line master.” She pitched DOS to recruits as a women’s empowerment group or mentorship sorority and used her celebrity to draw people in, later saying her acting career “was a power tool that I had to get people to do what I wanted.”⁶⁷

Once women joined, Mack imposed severe control. She enforced extreme low-calorie diets, required members to respond to text messages within 30 seconds at any hour, mandated celibacy, made “slaves” address her as “master,” and required weekly nude group photos. India Oxenberg, one of Mack’s recruits and the daughter of actress Catherine Oxenberg, was put on a 500-calorie-a-day diet, required to carry a scale, and lived with Mack as a house servant for two years.⁸⁹

Collateral

Before being admitted, recruits had to hand over deeply compromising material: sexually explicit photos and videos, or fabricated written statements such as letters falsely accusing a family member of sexual abuse. The threat of releasing that material kept members from leaving. Mack told recruits DOS was a “lifetime commitment.”⁸

Branding

DOS members were branded near their pelvises with a cauterizing pen. The process took about 20 minutes, was done without anesthesia, and required other women to hold the person being branded in place. Mack told members the symbol represented the four elements. It actually incorporated Raniere’s initials, and according to court testimony her own initials as well. She justified the pain by telling women that “pain is love, and you show your love to your master by pain.”⁸⁷

Arrest, Indictment, and Guilty Plea

The FBI arrested Mack on April 20, 2018, alongside Raniere. The original indictment charged both of them with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and forced labor conspiracy. Mack was released on a $5 million bond and placed under house arrest. A superseding indictment later added Clare Bronfman, Nancy Salzman, Lauren Salzman, and Kathy Russell as co-defendants.¹⁰¹¹

On April 8, 2019, Mack pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York to two counts: racketeering conspiracy and racketeering. Each count carried a 20-year maximum, for a combined statutory exposure of 40 years. The plea took her out of the joint trial with the remaining defendants.¹²¹

Cooperation With Prosecutors

Mack participated in multiple proffer sessions and met with prosecutors numerous times to prepare for potential testimony at Raniere’s trial. She was ultimately not called, but the government described her assistance as “significant, detailed and highly corroborated.” Her most consequential contribution was a recording she had made of a conversation with Raniere about the branding ceremonies, in which he instructed that women should say “please brand me, it would be an honor” so the acts would appear voluntary. Prosecutors cited that recording in both their opening and closing statements at Raniere’s trial. They also noted her help “could have been even more substantial had she made the decision to cooperate earlier.”¹¹³

The Sentence

On June 30, 2021, U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis sentenced Mack to three years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a $20,000 fine. The sentence came in well under the advisory guidelines range of 14 to 17.5 years, which the government had asked the court to depart from based on Mack’s substantial assistance.²

Judge Garaufis called Mack “an essential accomplice” and a “willing and proactive ally” of Raniere, while also acknowledging she had been “manipulated” and “felt captive.” He said the sentence reflected both the “seriousness of the crime” and the need to “deter others.”²

Victims addressed the court. Jessica Joan, using the name “Jay,” called Mack “a predator and an evil human being” who “took great pride and joy knowing she had total control,” comparing her to “the Ghislaine Maxwell to Keith’s Jeffrey Epstein.” Tabitha Chapman appeared by video and told Mack, “I am heartbroken for you and I am heartbroken for all of the women that trusted you and were harmed.”¹⁴ India Oxenberg said she was “still in a state of disbelief” but trusted the judge’s decision.¹⁵

In a letter to Judge Garaufis before sentencing, Mack wrote that she had experienced “overwhelming shame,” called her devotion to Raniere “the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life,” and apologized for exposing others to his “nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes.”¹⁶

Prison and Early Release

Mack surrendered to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, on September 13, 2021, about two weeks ahead of the court-ordered deadline.¹⁷¹⁸¹⁹

Where the Rest of the NXIVM Case Stands

Mack’s prosecution was part of a broader federal case:

Keith Raniere was convicted by a jury in June 2019 on seven counts, including sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy, and racketeering, and was sentenced in October 2020 to 120 years in prison and a $1.75 million fine. In October 2025, the Second Circuit upheld his conviction.²⁰²¹
Clare Bronfman pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor undocumented immigrants and identification fraud, was sentenced in September 2020 to 81 months, and moved to a New York City halfway house in 2024.²²
Nancy Salzman pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and was sentenced in September 2021 to 42 months; she was released to a halfway house after less than 20 months.²³
Lauren Salzman, cited by the judge for “extraordinary” cooperation, received five years of probation and 300 hours of community service in July 2021, with no prison time.²⁴
Kathy Russell, the group’s bookkeeper, pleaded guilty to visa fraud and received two years of probation and 200 hours of community service in October 2021.²⁵

Mack also faces civil exposure. A January 2020 lawsuit, Edmondson v. Raniere, filed on behalf of more than 80 former NXIVM members, names Mack and 14 other defendants and alleges fraud, forced labor, human trafficking, and racketeering under federal RICO law. As of mid-2026, the case remains active in the Eastern District of New York, with some claims narrowed and others allowed to proceed.²⁶²⁷

What Mack Has Said Since

Since her release, Mack has stayed largely out of public view. She enrolled at Long Beach City College and has pursued a master’s degree in social work.²⁸²⁹⁶
