Checking Your Status Online or by Phone
The Registration Lookup at ova.elections.il.gov/registrationlookup.aspx searches the statewide voter database. If you would rather not use the website, your County Clerk can look you up manually. In Chicago and a few other jurisdictions, that office is called the Board of Election Commissioners. Either can confirm your status, the address on file, and your assigned precinct.
What Your Lookup Result Means
Active means you are fully registered and can vote at your assigned polling place with no extra steps.
Inactive does not mean you were removed from the rolls. Election authorities move you to inactive status when a mailed registration card comes back as undeliverable, usually because you moved. You are still registered, and you can return to active status by voting or updating your address. If you show up on election day as inactive, you can still cast a ballot after confirming your current address.
No record at all means you are not registered under the information you entered. That happens if you never registered, if your registration was canceled after you failed to respond to an address confirmation notice and then missed two consecutive federal general elections, or if there is a simple data-entry mismatch. Try alternate spellings first. If nothing turns up, treat yourself as unregistered and use one of the methods below.
Who Can Register in Illinois
To register, you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of your election district for at least 30 days before the election, and at least 18 years old on or before election day.2Illinois General Assembly. A past felony conviction does not disqualify you. You lose the right to vote in Illinois only while you are serving a sentence in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. If you are on probation, on parole, awaiting trial, or have completed your sentence, you can register.

Without an Illinois driver’s license or state ID, use a paper form. Grace Period and Election Day Registration
Illinois lets you register in person and vote on the same visit after the regular deadlines pass. Starting 27 days out, you can register at your local election authority’s office. Beginning 15 days before the election, early voting sites also accept grace period registrations. On election day, you can register and vote at your assigned polling place.8Illinois General Assembly. Bring two forms of identification showing your name and current address. A common combination is a driver’s license plus a utility bill or bank statement. Once registered, you cast a grace period ballot on the spot. It is handled like an early ballot and counted with the rest after the election authority confirms your registration.
Grace period registration also covers address changes. If you moved within Illinois and never updated your record, you can change your address and vote at the same visit.
You May Already Be Registered Without Knowing It
If you have visited a Secretary of State driver services facility recently, you may already be on the rolls. If You Registered by Mail and Have Never Voted Here
Federal law adds one step for first-time voters who registered by mail and have never voted in a federal election in Illinois. Voting in person, bring a photo ID or a document showing your name and address. Voting by mail, include a copy of one of those documents with your ballot. The requirement does not apply if you put your driver’s license number on your registration form and it was successfully matched to state records.
