Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s marriage lasted about fifteen months, from a February 2015 wedding on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas to Heard’s divorce filing in May 2016, and the fallout produced two defamation trials on two continents. A London judge ruled in 2020 that a tabloid had substantially proved Depp physically abused Heard. The Australia Incident
About a month after the wedding, the couple was staying at a rented property in Australia while Depp filmed the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean. On the night of March 7, 2015, Depp lost the tip of his right middle finger. Each side’s account of that night became one of the most contested pieces of the whole legal saga.
Depp testified that during an argument about the postnup, Heard threw a vodka bottle that shattered and severed his fingertip. Heard’s account was very different. She testified that Depp slammed her against a wall, threw bottles at her, ripped off her nightgown, and sexually assaulted her with a liquor bottle. Divorce Filing and Restraining Order
On May 23, 2016, Heard filed for divorce.8People. In her sworn declaration, Heard alleged that during a May 21, 2016, argument Depp threw a cellphone at her face with “extreme force,” pulled her hair, and “violently grabbed” her face. She described a separate April 2016 incident, on or around her birthday, in which she said Depp threw a magnum champagne bottle at a wall, threw a wine glass at her, and shoved her to the floor. The $7 Million Divorce Settlement
In August 2016 the couple reached a settlement. Depp agreed to pay Heard $7 million with no spousal support either way. They issued a joint statement: “Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”8People. Finalization slipped into January 2017 because of a dispute over how the money would be paid. Depp proposed sending installments directly to the two charities, which Heard’s team argued would allow him to claim the tax deduction. By late November 2016 the charities had reportedly received only $100,000 each from Depp; Heard had separately sent $350,000 of her own to the ACLU. Whether Heard actually donated the settlement money became a live issue at the later defamation trial. ACLU Chief Operating Officer Terence Dougherty testified in April 2022 that the organization had received $1.3 million credited to Heard’s name over four installments, with payments stopping after December 2018. Of that $1.3 million, $100,000 came directly from Depp and $500,000 came from a Vanguard account the ACLU believed was associated with Elon Musk. The 2020 UK Libel Ruling
Before the American case, the allegations from the marriage were tested in a London courtroom. In 2018, Depp sued News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, and executive editor Dan Wootton over a column that called him a “wife beater.” The case went to trial for sixteen days in July 2020 at the Royal Courts of Justice.14BBC. The newspaper relied on the statutory defense of truth under the Defamation Act 2013, meaning it had to prove the “wife beater” characterization was substantially true. It identified fourteen specific incidents of alleged domestic violence between 2013 and 2016. On November 2, 2020, Mr. Justice Andrew Nicol ruled for the paper, finding twelve of the fourteen incidents had occurred and that Depp had put Heard in “fear for her life” on three occasions. On March 25, 2021, the Court of Appeal refused Depp permission to appeal. The Virginia Defamation Trial
On December 18, 2018, The Washington Post published an op-ed by Heard titled “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” The piece did not name Depp but described Heard as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”16The Washington Post. In 2019, Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard in Fairfax County Circuit Court, Virginia, based on three specific statements in the op-ed. The six-week trial began on April 11, 2022, broadcast live to a global audience. The couple’s former marriage counselor Dr. Laurel Anderson testified the relationship involved “mutual abuse” and that Heard often instigated fights to prevent Depp from leaving. The jury heard audio recordings in which Heard admitted “hitting” Depp and asked him not to leave her. The Verdict
On June 1, 2022, the jury unanimously found that Heard had defamed Depp through all three op-ed statements and awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. How the Litigation Ended

On December 22, 2022, both sides agreed to drop their appeals. Under the settlement, Heard agreed to pay Depp $1 million, which his team said he intended to donate to charity. The original Virginia verdict and judgment remained in place. In a statement, Heard said the settlement was “not an act of concession” and that she had “made no admission,” but that she could not face a third trial after Virginia and the 2020 UK proceedings. Where They Are Now
After the Virginia trial, Heard moved to Madrid, Spain.
