Amy Bosley Case: Staged Break-In, Guilty Plea, and Parole

The Amy Bosley case is the 2005 Kentucky murder in which Amy Bosley shot and killed her husband, Robert “Bobby” Bosley, inside their Alexandria log cabin, then staged a home invasion to cover the killing. Investigators cracked her story within days, in part because the couple’s two young children told police the gunshots came before the sound of breaking glass. She pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, drew a 20-year sentence, and was paroled in May 2022 after serving 85 percent of her term.¹

Why She Killed Him

Robert Bosley, 42, owned Robert J. Bosley Roofing and Chimney Sweep Service Inc., a Campbell County business valued at roughly $1 million.² From the outside the family looked prosperous: expensive cars, a private plane, a 50-foot boat at Lake Cumberland, and a 35-acre estate where they planned to build.³

Amy kept the books. She had also, for years, been hiding roughly $1.7 million in unpaid taxes from her husband. She intercepted his mail, set up a P.O. box to catch IRS notices, and forwarded his cell phone calls to herself so tax agents could never reach him directly.⁴²⁵¹

The trigger came on May 16, 2005. An IRS agent called the house and demanded to speak with Robert. Amy put someone else on the line to impersonate him; the agent later described the voice as “a woman trying to sound like a man.” The agent insisted on an in-person meeting the next morning, at which Robert would have learned everything.⁴ Investigators concluded Amy feared he would divorce her and take the children if he found out. Prosecutor Jack Porter later said it was the only motive that “sort of made a little bit of sense,” adding, “How do you make sense out of this thing really? A divorce is pretty easy to get.”⁶

The Shooting and the Staged Break-In

In the early hours of May 17, 2005, Amy shot Robert multiple times as he lay in bed in the couple’s log cabin off US 27, south of Alexandria. Accounts vary on whether there were six or seven shots, but forensics established he was shot while lying down with his back to the shooter: three wounds to the back, two to the side, one to the front.¹ Their daughter Morgan, 9, and son Trevor, 6, were in the house.⁷

Afterward, Amy staged the scene. She broke glass, scattered pills, pulled drawers open, and left cash sitting out. She called 911 twice, telling dispatchers in what investigators later called a “hysterical-spouse voice” that an intruder had shot her husband and run out the back door.⁸

How the Story Fell Apart

Campbell County detectives thought the scene looked “too perfect.”⁴ A K-9 unit found no footprints in the dewy grass behind the house, which contradicted her account of an intruder fleeing that way. Amy had told police she and her husband were face-to-face with the attacker, but Robert’s wounds showed he had been shot from behind while lying down.

Two physical finds sealed the case. Detectives pulled four shell casings out of a running washing machine full of clothes, water, and detergent; forensics matched them to the murder weapon. Police then found the gun itself inside Amy Bosley’s purse.⁸

Morgan and Trevor were interviewed separately and gave investigators the piece that made the intruder story impossible: they heard gunshots first, then breaking glass.⁹ Ten days after the killing, on May 27, 2005, Amy admitted she had shot her husband. She was arrested and held on a $1 million bond.¹⁰

The Guilty Plea and 20-Year Sentence

Amy initially pleaded not guilty. On September 24, 2006, she reversed course and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The tampering count covered the staged scene and the casings hidden in the washer.¹¹ Under the deal, she received 20 years for murder and five for tampering, to run concurrently. Judge Fred Stine handed down the sentence in Campbell County Circuit Court on November 2, 2006.⁹

A driving reason for the plea deal was to keep the children off the witness stand. Prosecutors had planned to call Morgan and Trevor to testify about the sequence of sounds that night. Robert’s parents, who had taken custody, pushed for a resolution that would spare them that. Amy said she pleaded guilty for the same reason.¹⁰

No separate state or federal tax fraud charges were ever filed against Amy. The IRS continued pursuing the unpaid payroll taxes from Robert Bosley’s estate.⁵

Parole and Release in 2022

Kentucky law makes violent offenders eligible for parole after 85 percent of the sentence. Amy Bosley hit that mark in 2022. In January the parole board notified Robert’s family that she could be released within 60 days.¹

The family objected in a three-page letter, writing that they wanted her kept in prison so “her children do not have to be reminded of that summer night when their world would be turned upside down by the person who gave them birth and should have protected them.”¹ Amy Bosley was released from the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women on May 18, 2022, about three years before the end of her full term.¹² By then, both children were adults, raised by Robert’s parents.
