Amy Bradley Missing From Cruise Ship: Sightings and Lawsuits

Amy Lynn Bradley, a 23-year-old from Chesterfield, Virginia, disappeared from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas in the early morning of March 24, 1998, as the vessel sailed through international waters between Aruba and Curaçao. More than 28 years later, the Amy Bradley cruise ship disappearance remains unsolved. The FBI still classifies the case as active, and as of 2026 the agency offers a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to her recovery.¹

The Night She Vanished

The Bradley family — Amy, her parents Ronald and Iva, and her brother Brad — had left San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 21, 1998, on a Caribbean itinerary that included Aruba, Curaçao, St. Martin, and St. Thomas.¹ After the ship pulled away from Aruba on the evening of March 23, Amy and Brad spent hours at the ship’s disco. They returned to the family cabin around 3:30 a.m. and sat on the suite’s balcony together for roughly two hours.²

Ron Bradley has said he saw Amy asleep on a deck chair on the balcony at about 5:30 a.m. When the family checked again around 6:00 a.m., she was gone. The sliding balcony door was partway open. A pair of her sandals was still on the deck, though she had brought nine other pairs on the trip. She had taken her room key, a lighter, cigarettes, and about $100 in cash.²

Two passengers said they saw Amy near 6:00 a.m. riding an elevator toward the top deck with a man known onboard as “Yellow.”² The Bradleys pressed the crew to hold the ship in Curaçao. Instead, the gangplank was lowered on arrival and passengers were allowed to disembark before any organized search began.

The Last Person Seen With Her

“Yellow” was later identified as Alastair Douglas, a bass player in the ship’s house band, Blue Orchid. Onboard surveillance captured him dancing with Amy in the nightclub hours before she vanished.³ Multiple witnesses placed them together on an upper deck between 5:30 and 5:45 a.m. Douglas has maintained he left the passenger area around 12:55 a.m. and did not see Amy again.⁴

Brad Bradley has said that on the morning of the disappearance, Douglas approached him and said he was “sorry to hear about your sister” at a point when, according to Brad, only the family and the ship’s captain knew Amy was missing.⁵

The FBI questioned Douglas multiple times. He took a polygraph; one account describes the result as “inconclusive,” while Douglas has said he passed it.³ No evidence was found to support charges. Douglas has said FBI agents told him he was “clear,” and he denies any involvement. He now lives in a remote part of Grenada, where he serves as a reverend to a small congregation.⁴

Overboard or Abducted

Two explanations have followed the case for decades, and neither has been confirmed.

The ship’s cruise director at the time said Amy fell or jumped overboard.³ The Bradleys have rejected that account. Amy was an experienced swimmer and a former lifeguard. The ship was close to shore when she disappeared, which investigators have said makes it unlikely a fall would go unnoticed or that a body would never surface.²

The family believes Amy was abducted, and one line of theory pursued over the years is that she was taken off the ship and forced into sex trafficking in the Caribbean. A separate suggestion, that she left the ship voluntarily to start a new life, is one her family has rejected. The FBI has said it found no evidence of foul play, though the investigation remains open.⁶

Reported Sightings

Over the years, several people have said they saw Amy alive after March 1998. None of these sightings has been confirmed, and because most surfaced long after the fact, authorities could not act on them in real time.

A Canadian tourist, David Carmichael, said he saw a woman on a beach in Curaçao with a Tasmanian devil tattoo matching Amy’s. He said she was with two men, one of whom he identified as Alastair Douglas. Douglas denied the encounter, saying he stays away from beaches.³
Bill Hefner, a Navy veteran, said he met a woman in a Curaçao bar who identified herself as Amy Bradley and told him she had left a cruise ship to “score drugs” and was being held against her will.³
In 2005, Judy Maurer said she encountered a woman in a Barbados restroom who was being physically controlled by a group of men. The woman allegedly told Maurer her name was Amy.³
Also in 2005, an anonymous tipster sent the family a link to a website advertising sex workers. An FBI forensic analysis found that one of the women pictured resembled Amy.³

The Family’s Search

Ron and Iva Bradley have spent decades and much of their own money trying to find their daughter. They offered a $250,000 reward and ran a sustained public awareness campaign.⁷

That effort attracted at least one serious con. In the fall of 1999, a man named Frank Jones contacted the Bradleys claiming to be a former U.S. Army Special Forces officer leading a team of ex-Rangers and Navy SEALs. He said he could rescue Amy from armed captors in Curaçao. Over several months he fed the family fabricated updates and a blurry photograph he claimed showed Amy. He took $24,000 from the Bradleys’ personal savings and more than $180,000 from nonprofits set up to fund the search. Jones was later convicted of fraud and ordered to pay restitution.⁸

Jurisdiction has been a wall throughout. Because Amy disappeared in international waters, the FBI’s authority has been limited, and Curaçao officials said at one point that no crime had occurred on their soil to warrant an investigation.⁷ Much of the practical investigative work has fallen to the family.⁹

The Lawsuits Against Royal Caribbean

In 1999, Ronald and Iva Bradley filed two lawsuits against Royal Caribbean Cruises in Miami-Dade County, one for negligence and one for wrongful death. The wrongful death claim was filed despite no confirmed evidence that Amy had died.¹⁰

In October 2000, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Stuart Simons dismissed both cases, ruling that the Bradleys had “perpetrated a fraud on the court.” According to the judge, the family had concealed evidence that witnesses observed Amy living freely in Curaçao after the disappearance and had given false answers during depositions. Royal Caribbean’s attorneys then sought $171,000 in sanctions against the Bradleys’ law firm, citing more than 1,300 billable hours on the case.¹¹ In March 2002, Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal affirmed the dismissal of the negligence suit.¹²

Renewed Attention in 2025 and 2026

In July 2025, Netflix released a docuseries titled Amy Bradley Is Missing, directed by Ari Mark and Phil Lott. The series drew new attention to the case and featured interviews with the Bradleys, FBI officials, and key witnesses.³

One of its most notable moments came from Amica Douglas, Alastair Douglas’s daughter, who spoke about her suspicions of her father. She said he became distant after the cruise and that she once found a bag of photographs of women who were not her mother. The film includes a scene in which she calls him to confront him. Douglas denied wrongdoing.³

Brad Bradley said the series generated “thousands and thousands” of communications from the public.¹³ Reports described three “very significant” new leads: testimony from a female bartender on the ship who allegedly heard someone shouting “Señorita kidnapped!” the night Amy vanished; a suspicious digital hit on the family’s missing-person website traced to a device near Barbados; and new information about a potential child.¹⁴ The family has publicly cautioned about some of the reporting. Brad Bradley said the family was “unaware of who the source is” for the bartender lead and could not substantiate it, and said individuals claiming to be Amy’s children had been “ruled out by various methods.”¹⁵

As of late 2025, the family said a new FBI agent was being assigned to the case, and that they had been meeting with representatives of Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley’s office to seek access to previously withheld FBI case files.¹³ The Bradleys have also hired private investigators, funded by donations after the docuseries aired, who have been reported to be working in Curaçao and nearby countries.¹⁴ In March 2026, the FBI announced a new $25,000 reward for information leading to Amy’s recovery and to the identification of those responsible for her disappearance.⁶ A support group called the “Amy Awareness Army” has organized fundraisers, and the family has been pushing for stronger cruise-ship missing-persons legislation through an online petition called “Amy Alert.”⁹

Why the Case Has Been So Hard to Solve

Amy vanished on the high seas between two Caribbean nations, aboard a ship whose crew and passengers scattered at the next port. FBI authority to investigate offshore crimes depends on where the ship is, who owns it, its flag state, and whether the victim or perpetrator is a U.S. national.¹⁶ When a crime occurs in international waters, the laws of the flag state generally apply, and U.S. agents cannot board a foreign-flagged vessel without that country’s consent. FBI testimony before Congress has acknowledged that missing persons cases at sea “rarely result in prosecution.”¹⁷

Those constraints show up in the Bradley timeline: the ship docked in Curaçao before any organized search began, passengers left, and by the time investigators could act, the physical scene was gone.

How to Submit a Tip

The FBI’s investigation remains active. The agency has published age-progressed photographs showing Amy at 42 and maintains a missing person poster in both English and Spanish.¹ Anyone with information can contact the FBI through its online tip portal, a local field office, or the nearest American embassy or consulate. Brad Bradley said in late 2025 that the family’s hope was higher than it had been in “a long, long time.”¹³
