Anthony James Palazzolo was born on June 1, 1940, and spent most of his life in Wyandotte and Taylor, Michigan, in the downriver Detroit area.1Molnar Funeral Home. His only significant federal prosecution came in the mid-1990s, when he was named in a 22-count indictment charging conspiracy to launder drug money and related financial reporting violations. A jury convicted him on all counts, but the Sixth Circuit reversed the conspiracy conviction in December 1995 over faulty jury instructions and remanded the case.4Findlaw. United States v. The Evidence Tying Him to Hoffa’s Killing
Hoffa, the former Teamsters president, drove to the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township on July 30, 1975, for a meeting with Detroit enforcer Anthony “Tony Jack” Giacalone and New Jersey mob figure Anthony “Tony Pro” Provenzano. The FBI’s Detroit field office came to view the killing as a conspiracy ordered by Detroit boss Giacomo “Black Jack” Tocco and capo Tony Jack Giacalone. Investigators identified three men as the hit team: Vito “Billy Jack” Giacalone, believed to have picked Hoffa up from the parking lot; Salvatore “Sally Bugs” Briguglio, a New Jersey enforcer for Provenzano; and Palazzolo.2The Mob Museum. Three pieces of evidence point at Palazzolo directly. In the 1990s, an FBI wiretap captured him apparently bragging about his part in the killing. In 2012, an informant told the FBI that Palazzolo “beat and strangled Hoffa to death.” And Hoffa’s DNA was recovered from the trunk and backseat of a maroon Mercury Marquis owned by Joey Giacalone, Billy Giacalone’s nephew, supporting the theory that Hoffa was driven from the restaurant in that car.2The Mob Museum. Where Hoffa Was Allegedly Killed
Investigators have pointed to the Franklin Village home of Leonard “Little Lenny” Schultz as the probable murder site. Schultz was a longtime racketeer with roots in the old Purple Gang and served as a liaison between Hoffa and Tony Jack Giacalone. His house sat about five minutes west of the Machus Red Fox. A source with connections to the Giacalone crew told researchers, “Tony Jack had the house keys and they choked him out in the living room.”2The Mob Museum. The Schultz house had earlier been linked to violence. Furniture mogul Harvey Leach was reportedly killed there in the spring of 1974. What Allegedly Happened to the Body
According to Detroit crime writer Scott Burnstein, the FBI wiretap captured Palazzolo saying he put Hoffa’s body through a meat grinder at the Detroit Sausage Company, a mob-connected facility. The remains were then allegedly burned to ash at a mob-connected sanitation business.6CBC News. How the Theory Became Public in 2025
On July 23, 2025, a panel titled “Hoffa Mystery Solved: 50 years later” was held at Macomb Community College’s South Campus. Convertino said he first discovered the wiretap in 1993 while prosecuting a Detroit mobster, turned it over to the FBI, and saw it “kind of dismissed” at the time.7WWJ Newsradio. Tocco addressed why such an admission might have been made openly. “Sometimes, the best way to lie is to tell the truth,” he said. “The truth is so unimaginable that nobody believes it. Why No One Was Ever Charged
All three suspected members of the hit team died before any charges were brought. Sally Bugs Briguglio was gunned down outside a Manhattan social club in 1978, three years after Hoffa’s disappearance. Billy Jack Giacalone died of natural causes in 2012. Palazzolo died of stomach cancer in January 2019.2The Mob Museum. Where the Case Stands
The FBI has never publicly endorsed the Palazzolo theory and declined to comment on the claims made at the Macomb panel.7WWJ Newsradio. The Palazzolo account is one of several theories that have surfaced across 50 years. Frank Sheeran, the labor figure depicted in Martin Scorsese’s 2019 film The Irishman, claimed before his death that he shot Hoffa in a Detroit house, but investigators found blood at the scene did not belong to Hoffa, and the claim has been widely discounted.5ClickOnDetroit.
