Anthony Templet Now: Traffic Stop, Jail Return, and Plea Deal

Anthony Templet is now back in jail. The Baton Rouge man who killed his abusive father in 2019 at age 17, and received probation in a 2021 plea deal, was arrested in July 2025 on drug and alcohol charges following a traffic stop and remained incarcerated as of October 8, 2025, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for the next day.¹

Back in Jail After a July 2025 Traffic Stop

Anthony was pulled over in July 2025 for illegal window tint. Officers reported finding marijuana and an open bottle of vodka in the vehicle. A 15-year-old was in the car with him.

He was booked into a Pointe Coupee Parish jail and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, having an open container of alcohol, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bond was set at $75,000.¹

He sat in jail from July through October. Sentencing on the new charges was set for October 9, 2025. His attorney, Jarrett Ambeau, said he expected Anthony to receive credit for time served and to be released after the hearing. The available reporting does not confirm the outcome of that sentencing or whether his probation on the 2021 negligent homicide conviction was formally revoked.¹

The Second-Chance Money Is Gone

When the Netflix docuseries I Just Killed My Dad aired in August 2022, Ambeau set up a GoFundMe on Anthony’s behalf. The initial goal was $5,000. It ultimately raised about $101,920 from roughly 1,600 donors, earmarked for education, living expenses, and Anthony’s future.²

By the time of the 2025 arrest, that money was spent. Ambeau said Anthony had used it on a car, rent, and clothes. The $8,000 needed to post bond, Ambeau said, was beyond what Anthony could pull together; if any of the funds had remained, he believed Anthony would have bonded himself out.¹

The Plea Deal He Was Living Under

Anthony had initially been charged with manslaughter after the June 3, 2019 shooting, and an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury upgraded the charge to second-degree murder in August 2019.³ Ambeau, working pro bono, negotiated with District Attorney Hillar Moore and Assistant DA Dana Cummings to resolve the case without trial.

On March 1, 2021, Anthony pleaded no contest to negligent homicide. He was sentenced to five years of supervised probation with credit for time already served, adding no new jail time at that point.⁴ The terms required him to earn his GED, attend counseling, hold full-time employment or stay enrolled in school, and submit to regular check-ins and drug screenings. If he completed the terms, he would be eligible to have his record expunged.⁵

The drug screening requirement and the marijuana charge from the 2025 stop sit in obvious tension. Whether the state has moved to revoke probation on that basis is not confirmed in the available reporting.

Why His Background Still Frames the Case

Anthony’s life before the shooting shapes how his attorney, and much of the public sympathy that followed, has read his current trouble. In 2008, when Anthony was five, his father Burt Templet took him from the family’s home in Houston and brought him to Baton Rouge. A Baton Rouge family court judge granted Burt temporary emergency sole custody, reportedly based on Burt’s claim that the child would “suffer immediate and irreparable harm” if left with his mother, Teresa Thompson.⁶ Court records referenced in the Netflix documentary indicated Burt had previously served prison time for abusing Thompson while she was pregnant.⁷

Once Burt had custody, Anthony effectively vanished. He was never enrolled in school. He had no medical records. Ambeau summarized it: “Anthony didn’t exist.”⁸ Burt told neighbors Anthony was homeschooled, monitored the house with cameras, and told his wife Susan that Anthony’s mother was dead. Ambeau described what Anthony endured as “regular abuse: physical, mental, emotional.”⁹ Burt’s pattern of violence was documented across his relationships; his estranged wife Susan filed a 55-page protective order in Livingston Parish in early 2019 detailing repeated assaults.¹⁰

Anthony was reconnected with his biological mother and half-sister only after the shooting, having spoken to no one in that family for more than 11 years.¹¹

Ambeau, still representing Anthony in 2025, pushed back on the idea that a second chance had to be perfect. He called the arrest “a sad moment” and “a sad call to receive,” but added: “Whether or not that means a chance without any mistakes or any errors, I think that’s a bit of a stretch for a young man that was raised in the place he was raised.” He said Anthony had been left with “very limited tools in life” and “very limited experience and ideas about how to be an adult.”¹

What Hasn’t Been Reported

Two things the available reporting does not answer: whether the October 9, 2025 sentencing on the new charges produced the credit-for-time-served release Ambeau predicted, and whether Anthony’s probation on the 2021 negligent homicide conviction has been formally revoked as a result of the new charges. Both questions turn on court filings that had not been reflected in coverage as of early October 2025.¹
