Apple Siri Settlement: Claims, Eligibility, and Payout Amounts

The Apple Siri settlement is a $95 million class action resolution in Lopez v. Apple Inc., filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, that compensates U.S. owners of Siri-enabled Apple devices who say the voice assistant recorded them without being intentionally activated. Payments to approved claimants began going out on January 23, 2026, and most people received well under the $20-per-device cap.{¹}

What the Lawsuit Claimed

The core allegation was that Apple devices captured private conversations when no one said “Hey, Siri” or pressed a button. Lead plaintiff Fumiko Lopez, a California resident, alleged that her iPhone XR, iPhone 6, and Apple Watch recorded her at home, in her bedroom, and in her car without any intentional trigger, and that products she had only discussed aloud — Olive Garden, Easton bats, Pit Viper sunglasses, Air Jordans — later appeared as ads in her browser and third-party apps.{²}

The complaint alleged Apple shared unauthorized recordings with third-party contractors for review and with advertisers who used the audio for ad targeting.{³} A New Jersey plaintiff, John Troy Pappas, said that after a private December 2020 phone call with his doctor, he started seeing ads for the exact medical condition and surgical treatments they had discussed.{²}

Who Was Eligible

The class covered anyone in the United States or its territories who owned or purchased a Siri-enabled Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and who experienced an unintended Siri activation during a private or confidential conversation. Qualifying devices included iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs.{³} Apple employees, the company’s legal representatives, and judicial officers assigned to the case were not eligible.{⁴}

Filing required a sworn statement, under penalty of perjury, that you owned a qualifying device during the covered period, that Siri was enabled, and that an unintended activation occurred during a private conversation.{⁵} Claimants could file for up to five devices. The claim deadline was July 2, 2025, so new filings are no longer being accepted.{⁶}

How Much Claimants Actually Received

The settlement capped payments at $20 per device, or a theoretical $100 for someone claiming the full five, but the actual amount depended on how many valid claims were filed against the $95 million pool.{⁶} Claim volume pushed per-device payouts well below the ceiling.

Reporting citing claimant accounts put the average payment at roughly $8 per device, with people who filed for five devices reporting around $40 total.{⁷} NBC Chicago reviewed one payment confirmation dated February 3, 2026, showing a payout of $40.10.{¹} The fund also had to cover attorneys’ fees (class counsel requested up to 30% of the fund, roughly $28.5 million, plus up to $1.1 million in litigation expenses) and service awards of up to $10,000 for each named class representative.{⁸}

When Payments Went Out

Senior U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White granted final approval of the settlement in September 2025.{⁹} An appeal filed on November 12, 2025, was dismissed less than two weeks later, on November 25.{¹⁰}

With that cleared, payments to approved claimants started going out on January 23, 2026, and distribution wrapped up around January 26.{¹} Some recipients were paid by direct deposit; physical checks and other methods were also available.{¹¹} If you filed a valid claim and haven’t seen anything yet, check the email address and mailing address you submitted on your claim form.

What Apple Agreed To Do Beyond Paying

The settlement carried two non-monetary requirements, both to be completed within six months of the effective date. Apple agreed to confirm the permanent deletion of all individual Siri audio recordings collected before October 2019, and to publish a webpage explaining how users can opt in to the “Improve Siri” program and what data Apple keeps from those who participate.{¹²}

Apple’s Position

Apple settled without admitting wrongdoing.{⁹} The company said “Siri has been engineered to protect user privacy from the beginning” and that “Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose.”{¹³}
