Dogs are not allowed on the Wildwood boardwalk at any time of year. The ban runs the full length of the boardwalk through Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest, and it applies in every season, with no early-morning or off-peak window. The only exception is service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you’re bringing a pet, plan around the dog beach at Glenwood Avenue instead.
A Year-Round Ban, Not a Seasonal One
The Wildwoods visitor authority states plainly that dogs are not permitted on the boardwalk during any season.1Visit The Wildwoods. Some other Jersey Shore towns, like Ocean City and Avon-by-the-Sea, open their boardwalks to leashed dogs in the off-season. Wildwood does not. If you’ve seen a seasonal boardwalk rule online, it’s for another town.
The boardwalk draws millions of visitors and functions as a dense commercial strip of food vendors, rides, and heavy foot traffic. Even in the quieter months, the structure itself stays closed to pets.
Where to Take Your Dog Instead

The site has two areas with different rules. Dogs must stay leashed on the beach portion. Inside the fenced park, leashes are optional and dogs can run and socialize.2Visit The Wildwoods. Wildwood Dog Park and Beach Bring your own water. Shade is limited.
Beach Rules Across the Three Wildwoods
The three municipalities that make up “the Wildwoods” set their own beach rules, and the differences matter.
Wildwood

North Wildwood
North Wildwood permits dogs on the beach between 2nd Avenue and 26th Avenue, but only outside lifeguard hours: before 9:30 a.m. and after 5:30 p.m.3The Wildwoods, NJ. Beach Information Dogs are never allowed on the inlet portion. There is a separate dog park on the east side of the beach at 24th Avenue that requires a permit. Daily permits cost $10, and a 30-day permit is $25. Leashes are required on all North Wildwood beaches.
Wildwood Crest
The Wildwoods tourism site says dogs are allowed on Wildwood Crest beaches from October through May, with leash and waste-cleanup requirements.3The Wildwoods, NJ. Beach Rules If Wildwood Crest is part of your plan, call the borough office before your trip to confirm what’s actually being enforced.
Service Dogs Are the Exception
The boardwalk ban does not apply to service animals. Under the ADA, service dogs must be allowed to accompany people with disabilities in all areas open to the public, including places with a general “no pets” policy.5ADA.gov. Service Animals A trained service dog can walk the Wildwood boardwalk year-round.
The ADA defines a service animal as a dog individually trained to perform a task related to a person’s disability, such as guiding someone who is blind, alerting someone who is deaf, or interrupting a psychiatric episode. Emotional support dogs are not covered. A dog whose only role is comfort through its presence is not a service animal under the ADA and follows the same rules as any other pet.6ADA.gov. Leashes, Waste, and Visitor Licensing
All dogs must be on a leash in Wildwood public spaces, with the fenced dog park at Glenwood Avenue as the only exception. Owners have to clean up and properly dispose of waste. Violations can bring municipal fines.
For short visits, you don’t need a Wildwood dog license. Dogs already licensed by another New Jersey municipality are recognized without extra paperwork. Dogs licensed in another state can stay up to 90 days before needing a local license, and unlicensed dogs brought into the city need a Wildwood license after 10 days. Dining and Lodging With a Dog
You can eat within sight of the boardwalk even if you can’t walk it with your dog. Several Wildwood restaurants have outdoor patios that welcome leashed dogs, including PigDog Beach and Bar, which sits just off the boardwalk with picnic tables on the sand, and spots like Copper Dog Wildwood and Stella’s Cafe that keep dedicated dog menus. Many are seasonal and outdoor seating can close in bad weather, so call ahead.
Pet-friendly lodging is available but the rules vary a lot by property. Nightly pet fees at area hotels and motels typically run $25 to $40 per pet, while some vacation rentals charge a flat $100 to $150 per stay. Weight limits differ from place to place, from no limit at all down to 24 pounds at the strictest properties. On Vrbo and Airbnb, each host sets the pet policy, so read the individual listing’s house rules rather than the platform defaults. Pet-friendly rooms fill up faster than standard ones in summer, so book early.
