Property owners have their own exposure under the code. You have to ensure no one discharges fireworks on your property, even someone you didn’t invite to light them. If you’re not sure whether your address is unincorporated or inside a city, check your property tax records or look up the address on the King County Assessor’s website. The distinction matters because a city address falls under that city’s ordinance rather than the county code.
Rules Inside the Cities
The cities within King County have their own bans, and many were in place before the county’s 2022 prohibition. Seattle, Bellevue, Renton, and Shoreline all prohibit consumer fireworks.1King County. Because there’s no single document that covers every city, the reliable move is to check your city’s official site or call your local fire department. The financial exposure doesn’t end at the fine. If a stray firework damages a neighbor’s property or starts a brush fire, you’re personally responsible for those costs. Homeowner’s policies often exclude or limit coverage for damage caused by illegal activity, which can leave the full bill sitting with you.
Professional Displays Are the Exception
Licensed pyrotechnic shows for public events are the one legal path. Buying fireworks online and having them shipped in doesn’t get around the local ban, and shipping them creates its own federal problem. The U.S. Postal Service prohibits all fireworks in the mail, including sparklers, by both air and ground. Reporting Illegal Fireworks
Call 911 only when fireworks have caused a fire, a serious injury, or an immediate safety threat — a firework on a roof, an ignited bush, or someone hurt. Using 911 for general neighborhood noise ties up dispatchers.
