Are Washington Car Registration Fees Tax Deductible?

Washington car registration fees are mostly not tax deductible on your federal return. The tab renewal you pay to the Department of Licensing is built from flat charges that the IRS does not treat as deductible taxes. The one piece that can be deducted is the Regional Transit Authority Motor Vehicle Excise Tax, and only if you live inside the Sound Transit district in parts of King, Pierce, or Snohomish counties.

Why Most of the Tab Payment Doesn’t Qualify

Federal law only lets you deduct a personal property tax if it meets three tests: it is imposed annually, it is levied on personal property, and it is calculated on the property’s value alone.1Internal Revenue Code. 26 USC 164 – Taxes The third test is where Washington’s tab charges fail. A $30 license tab fee costs the same on a $5,000 sedan and a $50,000 truck, so it is not based on value and cannot be deducted. The same reasoning knocks out the $6 filing fee, the $11 service fee, the $10 weight fee, and the $2-per-plate reflection charge that make up a standard passenger renewal.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Calculate Vehicle Tab Fees Electric vehicle surcharges and the transportation electrification fee fail the same test.

When a payment bundles a flat fee with a value-based tax, the IRS instructions for Schedule A are explicit: you deduct only the value-based portion.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) In Washington, that value-based portion is the RTA MVET line, and nothing else.

The RTA MVET Is the Only Deductible Line

The Regional Transit Authority Motor Vehicle Excise Tax funds Sound Transit and is collected by the Department of Licensing on behalf of the agency. It applies only to registered vehicle owners whose address falls within the Sound Transit taxing district, which covers portions of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.4Washington State Department of Licensing. Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Tax Sound Transit publishes an address lookup you can use to confirm whether you are inside the boundary.

Because the RTA MVET is imposed annually and calculated from the depreciated value of your vehicle, it meets the federal ad valorem test. The Washington Department of Revenue has confirmed that motor vehicle excise tax payments are deductible for federal purposes by taxpayers who itemize.5Washington Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Information Live outside the district, and your registration contains no deductible tax at all.

How to Find Your Deductible Amount

Look at your registration renewal notice or receipt for a line labeled “RTA Tax” or “RTA MVET.” That number is the deductible figure. The DOL does not separate it out for you at tax time, so identifying it is on you.

If you want to verify the calculation, the tax equals 1.1% of your vehicle’s depreciated value, where the depreciated value is your original MSRP multiplied by a percentage set by state law for that year of service.4Washington State Department of Licensing. Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Tax Year of service is the current calendar year minus the model year plus one, so a 2022 model in 2026 sits in its fifth year.

The depreciation schedule runs:

  • Year 1: 100% of MSRP
  • Year 2: 95%
  • Year 3: 89%
  • Year 4: 83%
  • Year 5: 74%
  • Year 6: 65%
  • Year 7: 57%
  • Year 8: 48%
  • Year 9: 40%
  • Year 10: 31%
  • Year 11: 22%
  • Year 12: 14%
  • Year 13 and older: 10%

A worked example: a vehicle with a $35,000 MSRP in its fifth year of service has a taxable value of $25,900 ($35,000 × 74%). Multiply by 1.1% and the RTA tax is $284.90. That is the deductible number. The license tab, filing fee, weight fee, and everything else on the same receipt stay on your side of the ledger.

Claiming It on Your Federal Return

The RTA MVET goes on Schedule A (Form 1040), Line 5c, labeled “State and Local Personal Property Taxes.”3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) Enter the RTA amount only, not the total you paid the DOL. Keep the itemized DOL receipt with your tax records in case you need to show the breakdown.

Two ceilings determine whether the deduction actually saves you money. First, the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction is capped for tax year 2026 at $40,400, or $20,200 for married couples filing separately.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes The cap covers your combined property, income or sales, and personal property taxes. A few hundred dollars in RTA tax rarely bumps into it.

Second, and more likely to matter: itemizing has to beat your standard deduction. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for joint filers, and $24,150 for heads of household.7Internal Revenue Service. It helps only if your mortgage interest, charitable giving, other state and local taxes, and the RTA amount together clear the standard deduction.

Sales Tax When You Buy a Vehicle

Washington has no state income tax, so on Schedule A you elect to deduct state and local sales taxes by checking box 5a.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes In a year you buy a car, this election can dwarf the RTA line. You can use the IRS optional sales tax tables for general purchases and then add the actual sales tax paid on the vehicle on top. If the vehicle rate was higher than the general rate, you deduct only what would have been owed at the general rate.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) (2025) Washington’s general state sales tax rate is 6.5%, with local additions varying by jurisdiction.10Washington Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax Rates Both the sales tax on Line 5a and the RTA MVET on Line 5c count toward the same SALT cap.

Business Use Changes the Math

If you use the vehicle for business, the flat DOL fees that fail the personal-tax test can still be deducted as a business expense. Under the actual expense method, deductible costs include gas, oil, repairs, insurance, registration fees, and license charges, in proportion to the business-use percentage of your driving.11Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 510, Business Use of Car The personal-use share of the RTA MVET still goes on Schedule A, Line 5c. If you use the standard mileage rate instead of actual expenses, the flat fees are treated as built into the per-mile rate, but you can still separately deduct the RTA MVET as personal property tax.12Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Form 2106

Military Members Stationed in Washington

Active-duty servicemembers stationed in Washington who keep legal residence in another state are protected by the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which bars the host state from taxing a nonresident servicemember’s personal property, including vehicles, solely due to military orders.13U.S. Department of Justice. Servicemembers Civil Relief Act Text If your domicile is elsewhere but you are stationed inside the Sound Transit district, you should not owe the RTA MVET in the first place. If a charge appears on your registration, contact the DOL to have it removed rather than paying it and trying to deduct it later.
