Arizona residents can carry a digital driver’s license on a smartphone for free through the state’s official Arizona Wallet app. The credential works at TSA checkpoints, some retailers for age verification, and other settings where identity needs to be confirmed. It does not replace your plastic card: Arizona law still requires you to carry the physical license whenever you’re driving.
The App You Need
Arizona’s digital ID program originally ran through a separate app called Mobile ID, built by a third-party vendor. That app has been retired. Everything it did now lives inside Arizona Wallet, the state’s official digital ID platform.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Requirements and Cost
You need a valid Arizona driver license or state-issued ID card, plus a compatible smartphone. The app requires iOS 18.0 or later on iPhones and a current version of Android. Your device also needs biometric security like face recognition or a fingerprint reader, which the app uses to protect the credential.2Apple. How to Set It Up
Enrollment takes a few minutes. AZDOT lists four steps:4Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Wallet
- Open Arizona Wallet and grant the permissions it asks for, including camera access.
- Tap “Add to Wallet” on the home screen.
- Choose “Driver License or State ID” from the card type list.
- Follow the prompts to scan your physical license, then complete a facial recognition scan. The app matches your face against the photo MVD already has on file.
That facial match is what prevents someone from setting up a digital license with a stolen physical card, so the app tends to be picky about lighting and angles. Once it verifies you, the credential is ready.
Adding It to Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet
After enrolling in Arizona Wallet, you can push the credential into your phone’s built-in wallet app for quicker access. Arizona supports Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet.5Transportation Security Administration. Where You Can Actually Use It
TSA Airport Checkpoints
Airport security is the most established use. Arizona’s digital license works at more than 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide, not just in Arizona.5Transportation Security Administration. One catch: your digital license must be based on a REAL ID-compliant physical card to be accepted by TSA. If the plastic version isn’t REAL ID-compliant, the digital version won’t work at federal checkpoints either.8Transportation Security Administration. Retail and Age Verification
Some private businesses, particularly liquor retailers and grocery stores, accept the digital format for age verification. Acceptance is voluntary and depends on whether the business bought the reader equipment.9Arizona Department of Transportation. Mobile Driver License Plenty of places will still want to see a plastic card, so don’t count on the digital version being universally accepted for age-restricted purchases.
Out of State
Arizona’s digital license is built on an international standard, so it’s technically valid in other states the same way your physical card would be. The practical problem is that the verifier needs reader technology to scan it. AZDOT is straightforward about this: whether any business or agency outside Arizona actually has the equipment is up to them.9Arizona Department of Transportation. The Privacy Advantage
Handing a bartender your plastic card shows them your full name, date of birth, home address, and license number all at once. The digital version supports selective disclosure, meaning a verifier can confirm just the fact they need, such as whether you’re over 21, without seeing your address or other details.9Arizona Department of Transportation. Mobile Driver License The exchange is encrypted rather than displayed visually. Whether a given business takes advantage of that feature depends on its reader setup, but the capability is built into the credential.
You Still Have to Carry the Physical License
Arizona law requires every licensed driver to have a legible driver license in immediate possession while operating a motor vehicle, and to display it on demand from a police officer, justice of the peace, or department inspector.10Arizona Legislature. If you’re stopped and can’t produce a physical license, the charge is failure to exhibit identification, a class 2 misdemeanor.11Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 28 Section 28-1595 – Failure to Stop or Provide Driver License or Evidence of Identity; Violation; Classification The statute provides a defense: you cannot be convicted if you later produce a valid license to the court or the officer’s office that was valid at the time of the stop.10Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 28 Section 28-3169 – Possession and Display of Driver License; Defense That’s a statutory defense, not judicial discretion. Produce the license and the charge goes away.
Practical reasons matter too. Phones die, break, and lose signal. Not every business or agency has reader equipment yet. Treat the digital license as a supplement.
Showing Your Phone to a Police Officer
Handing a phone to an officer during a traffic stop makes people uneasy, and it should. In Riley v. California, the U.S. Supreme Court held that police generally need a warrant to search the digital contents of a cell phone, even during an arrest.12Justia U.S. Supreme Court. Riley v California, 573 US 373 (2014) Displaying your digital license does not authorize the officer to scroll through your photos, messages, or other apps.
Presenting the credential is compliance with the identification requirement, not consent to a phone search. You don’t need to unlock the device beyond what’s necessary to show the ID, and you can decline any request to hand the phone over for browsing. If you voluntarily unlock and pass the phone across, courts may treat that as consent, which weakens your Fourth Amendment protections. The safer approach is to display the credential yourself, keep the phone in your hand, and politely decline anything further.
