An Arizona driver license or ID card carries more than a dozen security features layered on top of each other, some visible in normal light, some only under ultraviolet illumination, and some encoded in a barcode on the back. The Motor Vehicle Division builds these credentials from polycarbonate, laser-engraves the photo and data into the card’s inner layers, and adds elements that require specialized equipment to reproduce.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Driver License and ID Card Gets a Makeover The result is a card designed so that tampering with any single element fails a check somewhere else.
What You Can See in Normal Light
The main photo is laser-engraved in black and white rather than color-printed. Laser engraving burns the image into the card’s inner layers, so swapping or altering it means destroying the card.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Driver License and ID Card Gets a Makeover A smaller ghost image repeats the same portrait elsewhere on the card, so any photo substitution would have to match both images at once.2Arizona Department of Transportation. The background carries Arizona-themed artwork, including Grand Canyon imagery introduced in earlier redesigns.3Arizona Department of Transportation. The Evolution of Arizona’s Driver License These fine-line patterns and color gradients don’t scan or print cleanly on ordinary equipment. Two high-resolution images on the card also shift depending on the viewing angle, so a flat photocopy or reprint gives itself away when tilted.
The Star, the Federal Warning, and the Vertical Card
Arizona issues two main credential types, and each one announces itself at a glance. A Travel ID, the REAL ID-compliant version, shows a gold star on the front, indicating the card meets federal standards for boarding domestic flights and entering restricted federal buildings.4Arizona Department of Transportation. A standard, non-travel Arizona credential is labeled “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” on the front.6Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona DL/ID Requirements Since REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, a card with that label alone won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint; you’d need a passport or another federally approved document.7Transportation Security Administration. Credentials issued to anyone under 21 use a vertical orientation instead of the standard horizontal layout. The card shows “Under 21” next to the photo and prints the date the holder turns 21, so age verification is immediate. A cardholder who turns 21 can get a replacement in the horizontal format without the designation.8Arizona Department of Transportation. Features That Only Appear Under UV Light or Magnification
Under ultraviolet light, an Arizona card reveals images that are invisible in normal conditions. The ringtail, Arizona’s state mammal, has been embedded as a UV feature since the 2014 redesign, and the 2023 update added more hidden images.10Arizona Department of Transportation. Rocky the Ringtail Has Been Keeping Arizona Driver Licenses Secure The inks used aren’t commercially available, so anyone trying to reproduce a card would have to source or fabricate them. MVD deliberately keeps the full inventory of hidden UV elements out of public documentation.
Microprint adds another layer. Text is embedded so small it looks like a solid line or border pattern to the naked eye, but becomes legible under magnification and typically spells out the state name or other identifiers. High-resolution scanners and printers blur these microscopic characters, so a convincing counterfeit almost always fails the magnification test. For law enforcement and trained document examiners, checking the microprint is one of the fastest ways to separate a real card from a fake.
Laser perforations add a third check. Tiny holes are drilled through the polycarbonate in the shape of Arizona’s outline. Hold the card up to a light source and the state silhouette appears clearly. Reproducing the perforations requires the same precision equipment used during manufacturing.
What the Card Feels Like
Arizona credentials are made from 100% polycarbonate, a rigid layered plastic fused together under heat into a single solid structure. Unlike the flexible PVC cards used in older designs, polycarbonate cannot be peeled apart without destroying the card.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Driver License and ID Card Gets a Makeover There’s no way to separate layers, insert a new photo, or chemically erase printed data without the tampering being obvious.
Run your finger across the card and the date of birth field has a raised feel. That field is physically engraved into the card rather than surface-printed, so it can’t be faked by placing a sticker or ink layer on top. Anyone checking manually can feel whether the raised data matches what’s printed. A mismatch means someone altered one and not the other. Arizona law specifically requires the department to use an issuance process that prevents photo superimposition without ready detection.9Arizona Legislature. The Barcode on the Back
Every Arizona credential carries a PDF417 two-dimensional barcode on the back, the format required by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators for U.S. driver licenses and ID cards.11American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. 2020 AAMVA DL/ID Card Design Standard The barcode stores the cardholder’s biographical information in dense machine-readable form, mirroring the data printed on the front.
When law enforcement, airport security, or a bank scans the barcode, the encoded data gets compared against what’s printed on the face of the card. If someone altered the printed name, address, or date of birth, the two records disagree and the card flags as potentially tampered. Modifying the barcode requires specialized knowledge of the encoding format; modifying the printed text is easier. The barcode is a second, independent record that has to agree with the first.
The Mobile Driver License Works Differently
Arizona also offers a mobile driver license that lives in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, or a standalone MVD app, and it’s legally valid for the same uses as the physical card.12Arizona Department of Transportation. Mobile Driver License Security on a phone works nothing like security on a piece of plastic. The cryptographic keys that verify your identity are stored in the device’s tamper-resistant secure hardware, Apple’s Secure Enclave or Android’s Trusted Execution Environment, and never leave that hardware, so malware on the phone can’t extract them.
The mobile version also allows selective information release. If a store only needs to confirm you’re over 21, the mDL can share that yes-or-no answer without revealing your full name, address, or date of birth. Transactions are contactless; you hold your phone near the verifier’s reader.13Arizona Department of Transportation. Apple Wallet The mDL works at eligible TSA checkpoints and is recognized in other states, but acceptance depends on whether the business or agency has compatible reader technology. MVD recommends keeping the physical card as a backup.12Arizona Department of Transportation. Mobile Driver License
What Happens if Someone Forges One
Forging an Arizona driver license or ID card is a class 4 felony under state law.14Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 13-2002 – Forgery; Classification; Definitions For a first-time offender, sentencing ranges from a mitigated term of one year to an aggravated term of 3.75 years in prison, with a presumptive sentence of 2.5 years.15Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 13-702 – First Time Felony Offenders; Sentencing If the forged document is used in connection with renting a dwelling that serves as a drop house, the charge escalates to a class 3 felony with steeper penalties. Between the layered security design and the felony exposure, the arithmetic of counterfeiting an Arizona credential doesn’t work out.
