Arkansas License Plate Options: Fees, Specialty, and Display Rules

Arkansas license plate options fall into four practical categories: a standard state-assigned plate that comes with regular registration, a personalized plate with characters you choose, specialty plates tied to a cause or affiliation (including military and disability plates), and a temporary paper buyer’s tag for the days right after a purchase. Each has its own fee and its own eligibility rules, all handled through the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA).

Standard Plates and Registration Fees

Every vehicle driven on Arkansas roads has to be registered with the DFA, and new owners get 60 calendar days from the purchase date to title and register. Residents moving from out of state also get 60 days after establishing residency.¹

The annual registration fee for a standard passenger car depends on weight:²

3,000 pounds or less: $17
3,001 to 4,500 pounds: $25
4,501 pounds and over: $30

With a standard plate, the DFA assigns your number from a predetermined sequence. It’s the default and the cheapest option.

Personalized Plates

A personalized plate lets you pick your own letters and numbers instead of taking the state-assigned combination. The plate itself keeps the standard Arkansas colors and design. The personalization fee is $25 per year on top of your regular registration fee.³

You can apply online at mydmv.arkansas.gov or by mailing the request form to the DFA’s Personalized Plate Unit in Little Rock. Having the plate mailed to you costs $31.50; picking it up at the Little Rock office costs $26.50.⁴

Character Limits and Rejected Combinations

Your combination can run up to seven characters, spaces included. The DFA rejects anything that conflicts with the regular plate numbering system or that it deems suggestive, offensive, or in poor taste. No two vehicles can share the same personalized plate,³ so the form lets you rank several choices in case your first pick is taken.

What Happens When You Stop Renewing

One rule worth knowing before you commit: if you decide not to renew a personalized plate, you must surrender it to the DFA at renewal time. Failing to turn it in is a misdemeanor.³ Letting registration lapse and keeping the plate in a drawer isn’t allowed.

Specialty Plates

Arkansas issues dozens of specialty plates covering amateur radio operators, antique vehicles, collegiate institutions, conservation causes, and many others. Fees vary by plate, and the extra money often supports the organization or cause the plate represents. The DFA maintains the full catalog.⁵

Military and Veteran Plates

Military plates require proof of eligibility. Under Arkansas law, you qualify if you’re a disabled veteran, a veteran of a foreign war, a recipient of a military honor, an ex-prisoner of war, or someone with past or present military service. You’ll also need either an honorable service record or an honorable discharge.⁶

Disability Plates and Placards

The DFA also issues specialty plates and parking placards for people with qualifying disabilities. A physician’s certification is required with the application, confirming both the nature and the duration of the disability. The specialty plates division handles the paperwork.

Temporary Buyer’s Tags

If you buy from a licensed dealer and aren’t transferring a plate from another vehicle you own, you need a temporary paper buyer’s tag within five business days of purchase. The dealer can issue it if they’re equipped to; otherwise you get it from the DFA or an approved vendor. The tag costs no more than $1.⁷

A temporary tag is valid until you register the vehicle or until 30 days after purchase, whichever comes first. Place it on the inside of the rear window, or where the permanent plate would sit if the vehicle has no rear window. If a prior lienholder still hasn’t released the title, the dealer can issue one additional 30-day tag.

Transferring or Replacing a Plate

You can move an existing plate to a replacement vehicle for a $10 transfer fee, provided the new vehicle carries the same registration fee. If it requires a higher fee, you pay the difference plus the $10.⁸ Transfer applies to certain vehicle categories; passenger automobiles and Class One trucks follow separate registration rules. Registering the new vehicle independently is always an option.

For lost, stolen, or damaged personalized plates, replacements cost $6.50 for Little Rock pickup or $11.50 by mail. Include a photo for a damaged plate and a copy of the police report for a stolen one.⁹ Standard plate replacements go through your local state revenue office, and the fees differ.

Display Rules Every Plate Has to Follow

Arkansas is a two-plate state, so most vehicles need one on the front and one on the rear. Motorcycles get a single rear plate. Trucks rated at one-ton capacity or larger can put their single plate on either the front or rear.¹⁰

Plates have to be fastened horizontally, sit at least 12 inches above the ground measured from the bottom edge, and stay clean enough to read clearly. Covers that reduce legibility or reflectivity are prohibited, though the law allows for trailer hitches, a towed trailer, wheelchair carriers, and bicycle racks that may unintentionally block the plate.¹⁰

Displaying a rear plate that wasn’t issued by the DFA is illegal, and reproducing, painting, or altering a plate is a misdemeanor that carries a fine between $100 and $500.¹¹

Penalties for Skipping Registration

Missing the 60-day registration window adds a late penalty of $3 for every 10 days overdue, capped at the amount of your annual registration fee (so between $17 and $30).¹²

Getting caught driving unregistered is separate. A first conviction carries a mandatory fine of at least $50 and up to $100. A second or later offense runs from $100 to $250. Two convictions in one year can trigger impoundment until you show the vehicle has been registered, and you cover the impoundment costs.¹³
