Arkansas license plates are issued by the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) through its Office of Motor Vehicle, and every vehicle driven on state roads has to carry one along with a current registration. New residents get 30 days after establishing residency to register. Buyers of new or used motor vehicles, motorcycles, and commercial trucks generally get 60 calendar days from the purchase date; trailers, mobile homes, ATVs, and motorboats get 30.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Vehicle Tag Renewal Miss the deadline and you pay late fees on top of the regular cost.
Getting a Plate on a New Vehicle
Registration happens at a local revenue office or online through the state’s MyDMV portal. Before anything else, you need an Arkansas title. Dealers usually handle the title application for you; if you bought from a private seller, bring the signed title with you.
You also need to have the vehicle assessed for personal property tax at your county assessor’s office. Arkansas requires personal property to be assessed annually between January 1 and May 31, and the revenue office will want proof that assessment is current and taxes are paid. Liability insurance has to meet the state minimum: $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.2Justia. Arkansas Code 27-22-104 – Insurance Required – Minimum Coverage – Definitions Coverage is verified electronically, so a lapse can stall the whole process.
One thing Arkansas doesn’t require: a safety or emissions inspection. The registration process is administrative, with no shop visit standing between you and your plate.
What Registration and Plates Cost
The base registration fee for passenger cars and motor homes is based on weight:
- 3,000 pounds or less: $17
- 3,001 to 4,500 pounds: $25
- 4,501 pounds and over: $30
Half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks and vans pay $21, as do one-ton trucks used only for personal transportation. Motorcycles run from $3 to $7 depending on engine size. Every registration adds a $2.50 validation decal fee, and the title fee is $10.3Justia. Sales Tax at the Counter
State sales tax is collected when you title the vehicle. For used vehicles, the rate depends on the purchase price:
- Under $4,000: no state tax collected
- $4,000 to $9,999: 3.5% state tax
- $10,000 or more: 6.5% state tax
Local taxes apply on top of the state rate and are not subject to those reduced tiers.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Recent Changes in the Law Budget for this alongside the registration fee, because both are collected at the same visit.
Extra Fees for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
Because these vehicles don’t generate the fuel tax revenue that funds roads, Arkansas charges an additional annual fee on top of standard registration:
- Fully electric vehicles: $200
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles: $100
- Standard hybrid vehicles: $50
The money is split among the state highway fund, county aid fund, and municipal aid fund. Vehicles registered under certain special license plate categories are exempt.6Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-614 – Additional Fee for Electric Vehicles, Hybrid Vehicles, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Types of Plates You Can Choose
Standard plates carry the current state design and are issued to most passenger vehicles as part of normal registration. Beyond that, Arkansas offers several specialty categories.
Personalized plates let you pick a custom letter-and-number combination for a $25 annual fee.7Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Personalized License Plate The DFA rejects combinations it considers offensive or misleading. Collegiate plates, cause-supporting plates, and organizational plates each carry their own additional fees that vary by design.
Antique vehicle plates are available for any vehicle 30 years old or older that is essentially unaltered from the manufacturer’s original specifications. Era-appropriate modifications and safety upgrades like seatbelts and sealed-beam headlights are allowed.8Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Antique Vehicle License Plate – Current Motorcycles, trailers, and mobile homes each have their own designated plate types, and government-owned vehicles get exempt plates that skip standard fees.
Temporary Buyer’s Tags
Buy from a licensed dealer and you’ll drive off with a preprinted paper buyer’s tag. It’s valid until you complete registration or until 60 calendar days after the purchase date, whichever comes first. The fee cannot exceed $5.50.9Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1705 – Temporary Preprinted Paper Buyer’s Tags
If your dealer can’t issue temporary tags directly, you have 10 calendar days to get one from an approved vendor or the OMV. Until then, keep a copy of the bill of sale in the vehicle. If your registration timeline stretches out, the dealer can issue one additional temporary tag good for 30 more days.
How the Plate Must Be Displayed
Arkansas issues a single plate that attaches to the rear of the vehicle. If two plates are issued for a particular class, one goes on the front and one on the rear. Trucks rated at one-ton capacity or larger can display their plate on either the front or rear.10Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-716 – Display of License Plates Generally
Every plate has to be securely fastened in a horizontal position, at least 12 inches above the ground measured from the bottom of the plate, and kept free of dirt or other material that makes it hard to read.10Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-716 – Display of License Plates Generally Tinted covers, reflective sprays, decorative frames that block any part of the plate, and anything else that alters its appearance are prohibited. A white light has to illuminate the rear plate at night. A burned-out plate light is a common reason for traffic stops.
The current validation decal has to be on the plate too. Displaying a fraudulent, altered, or expired decal can bring criminal charges, not just a traffic citation.
Renewing Every Year
Registrations renew annually, and your expiration date is tied to your last name. The OMV mails a renewal notice ahead of time, and you can renew up to 90 days before the expiration date. Three options: online through the state’s ARSTAR portal, in person at a revenue office, or by mail using the form on the renewal notice.11Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas STAR Vehicle Registration Renewal Help
Before you try to renew, confirm your personal property tax assessment is current and paid and your liability insurance is active. The system verifies insurance electronically, so a coverage gap will block the renewal even if you’re ready to pay. Late renewals carry penalties that grow the longer you wait, so don’t sit on the notice.
Replacing a Lost or Damaged Plate
If your plate is lost, stolen, or too damaged to read, replace it right away. Visit a revenue office or use the MyDMV portal with your current registration information and a valid government-issued ID. If it was stolen, file a police report first to protect yourself in case someone uses the plate fraudulently.
A replacement validation decal costs $2.50, and plate transfer fees are $1.4Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule Specialty and personalized plates can cost more to replace depending on the design. Attach the new plate as soon as it arrives, and if the old plate turns up later, surrender it to the DFA to prevent misuse.
Transferring a Plate When You Sell a Vehicle
Arkansas treats the plate as the owner’s property. When you sell a vehicle the plate stays with you, and you can move it to another eligible vehicle you own. The transfer fee is $1.4Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule
Bring the old vehicle’s registration, proof of ownership for the new vehicle, and the transfer fee to a revenue office. Specialty and personalized plates may cost more to transfer. If you don’t plan to reuse the plate, surrender it. Either way, notify the DFA promptly after the sale so state records reflect the ownership change and you’re not left liable for a vehicle you no longer own.12Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.
