Arlington Car Tax: Assessment, Relief, and Payment Deadlines

The Arlington car tax is a personal property tax charged at $5.00 per $100 of assessed value on any vehicle regularly parked in the county, with Virginia’s Personal Property Tax Relief Act cutting the bill on most personal-use cars. Payment is due every year on October 5, and an unpaid balance can block your DMV registration renewal.

Which Vehicles Arlington Taxes

If your car, truck, motorcycle, or trailer is kept in Arlington for more than 30 days, it’s taxable, even if the plates say otherwise.1Arlington County Virginia Government. Registering a Vehicle “Kept” refers to where the vehicle is regularly parked overnight, not where you drive during the day. Commute in from Fairfax and park there each night, and Arlington has no claim. Park at an Arlington apartment for more than 30 days and you owe, out-of-state license or not.

The tax year runs January 1 through December 31 and the bill is prorated by month. Half a month or more counts as a full month, so moving in on January 18 makes January a taxable month, and selling a car on June 10 leaves you owing for six months.2Arlington County Virginia Government. How the County Values Your Car

Arlington’s Commissioner of Revenue uses the clean loan value from the NADA Used Car Guide (now published by J.D. Power) as of January 1 each year.3Arlington County, Virginia. You can ask for a lower assessment if the vehicle has unusually high mileage. Submit an odometer reading or a repair receipt dated close to January 1.1Arlington County Virginia Government. Registering a Vehicle Body damage may also justify a reduction with a written repair estimate or insurance adjuster’s report. Filing an appeal doesn’t pause the payment deadline; if the county later lowers the value, you get a refund.

The Rate and How State Relief Reduces It

The rate is $5.00 per $100 of assessed value. A car assessed at $15,000 produces a gross bill of $750 before relief.

Virginia’s Personal Property Tax Relief Act (PPTRA) cuts that number for qualifying personal-use vehicles. In Arlington, qualifying vehicles get 100% relief on the first $3,000 of assessed value, with the remaining state reimbursement spread across each dollar of value from $3,001 to $20,000. Anything above $20,000 is taxed at the full rate with no relief.4Arlington County Government. County Board Report – Personal Property Tax Relief Clean special fuel vehicles and vehicles equipped to transport disabled individuals get a better deal: 100% relief on the first $3,000 and 50% relief from $3,001 to $20,000.

The vehicle has to be used primarily for personal transportation, not business. Relief is automatic on qualifying vehicles, so you won’t apply separately; the reduced amount already appears on your bill.5Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3524 – Tangible Personal Property Tax Relief

One point worth clearing up: Arlington’s tax relief for residents 65 or older or permanently disabled applies to real estate taxes only, not vehicle taxes.6Arlington County Virginia Government. Tax Relief and Exemptions There’s no age or disability discount on the car tax beyond the PPTRA relief everyone gets.

Registering Your Vehicle With Arlington

You have 60 days after moving to Arlington or acquiring a vehicle garaged here to register it with the Commissioner of Revenue.7Arlington County Virginia Government. A Virginia title or out-of-state plates don’t put you on the county’s tax rolls; you have to register with the county directly.

Use the Personal Property New Account Form on the Arlington County website. You’ll need the VIN, date of purchase, purchase price, and the garaging address where the vehicle parks overnight.1Arlington County Virginia Government. When October 5 lands on a weekend, the deadline usually shifts to the next business day. Check the county’s tax calendar each year to confirm.

What Late Payment Costs

Miss the deadline and the penalties add up fast. Virginia allows localities to charge a penalty of up to 10% on past-due personal property tax, rising to a 25% ceiling for vehicle taxes more than 30 days overdue. Interest runs at up to 10% per year, and in the second and later years of delinquency can match the IRS underpayment rate if that rate is higher. Collections can add attorney and agency fees of up to 20% of the delinquent balance.11Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3916 – Counties, Cities, and Towns May Provide Dates for Filing

The sharpest consequence is a DMV registration stop. Arlington can tell the Virginia DMV to block your registration renewal until you pay in full.12Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Delinquent Property Taxes and Vehicle Registration Once the balance clears, the hold lifts within 24 hours, but driving on an expired registration in the meantime is its own legal problem.

Military Servicemembers and Spouses

Active-duty military members and their legal spouses may qualify for a full exemption under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act. The servicemember has to maintain a legal domicile outside Virginia and provide a current Leave and Earnings Statement showing the out-of-state home of record.13Arlington County Virginia Government. Tax Exemption for Non-Resident Military Servicemembers and Legal Spouses A spouse claiming the exemption must share that out-of-state domicile. The exemption has to be renewed each year with updated documentation.

Active-duty members who lease a vehicle get a separate benefit: PPTRA covers 100% of the tax on the first $20,000 of assessed value when the lease requires the servicemember or spouse to pay the personal property tax.5Virginia Code Commission. Reporting Changes During the Year

The tax is prorated by month, so reporting changes promptly saves money. Sell a vehicle, move out of Arlington, or transfer a car to someone else, and you need to notify the Commissioner of Revenue so your account reflects the correct number of taxable months.2Arlington County Virginia Government. Reporting Vehicle Changes Skip that step and the bills keep coming for a car you no longer have, and unwinding it later takes documentation that gets harder to find.

Replacing one car with another mid-year? Report both the disposal and the acquisition. Each gets prorated to the months it was actually in Arlington.
