Arlington County Personal Property Tax: Rates, Relief, and Due Dates

Arlington County’s personal property tax on vehicles is billed at $5 per every $100 of assessed value, due once a year on October 5. If you garage, park, or store a car, truck, motorcycle, trailer, boat, or motor home in Arlington, you owe it, whether or not the vehicle is registered in Virginia.1Arlington County Virginia Government. Tax Calendar State-funded relief cuts the bill on the first $20,000 of value for personal-use vehicles, and the amount you actually pay depends on what your car is worth, how it’s fueled, and whether you qualify for a full exemption.

What Arlington Taxes and Where

The tax reaches any motor vehicle “normally” garaged, parked, or stored in the county. That word does the heavy lifting. Virginia’s situs rule taxes a vehicle in the locality where it actually lives most of the year; only if that can’t be determined does the tax follow the owner’s home address.3Virginia Code Commission. A narrow carve-out exists for full-time college students: a car garaged at the student’s university can be taxed at the parents’ home address instead, but only if the parents can show they’ve already paid personal property tax on that vehicle in their own locality.

How Your Vehicle’s Value Is Set

The Commissioner of Revenue assesses vehicles using recognized pricing guides such as J.D. Power, based on the clean trade-in value as of January 1 of the tax year.4Arlington County Virginia Government. It’s the dealer trade-in figure for a vehicle in clean condition.

If the assessment looks too high, you can appeal to the Commissioner of Revenue. Bring evidence: a recent appraisal, photos and estimates for damage, or comparable sale prices for the same year, make, and trim.

Tax Relief for Personal-Use Vehicles in 2026

Virginia’s Personal Property Tax Relief Act requires localities to discount the tax on qualifying personal-use vehicles, and Arlington’s 2026 structure is tiered by value:5Arlington County Virginia Government. Vehicle Tax Relief (PPTRA)

  • First $4,000 of assessed value: 100% relief. You owe nothing on this portion.
  • $4,001 to $20,000: 13% relief. The $5 per $100 rate applies, reduced by 13%.
  • Above $20,000: no relief. The full rate applies.

The $20,000 cap is set by state statute, so any value above that is taxed at the full local rate regardless of how the vehicle is used.6Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3524 – Tangible Personal Property Tax Relief On a car assessed at $25,000, that means no tax on the first $4,000, a discounted rate on the next $16,000, and the full rate on the last $5,000.

Clean special fuel vehicles, including electric and hybrid cars, are treated differently in 2026. They still get 100% relief on the first $4,000, but the subsidy on value between $4,001 and $20,000 drops to 9%, down from 50% in 2025.7Arlington County Virginia Government. Active-duty military members leasing a qualifying vehicle get 100% relief on the first $20,000, with the full rate applying only above that.6Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3524 – Tangible Personal Property Tax Relief

Full Exemptions

Active-duty service members whose legal residence is outside Virginia can be fully exempt on their vehicles, and the exemption extends to spouses.8Arlington County. Vehicle Personal Property Tax Exemptions Service members whose legal domicile is Virginia do not qualify. The exemption turns on home of record, not current duty station.

Veterans rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can exempt one personal-use automobile or pickup truck. You’ll need to apply through the Commissioner of Revenue’s office; questions go to vehicle@arlingtonva.us or 703-228-3135.

Registering a New Vehicle or a Move-In

Arlington County Code ยง27-11.1.C gives you 60 days to register for a personal property tax account after becoming an Arlington resident or acquiring a vehicle.9Arlington County Virginia Government. Selling, Moving Out, or Disposing of a Vehicle

Arlington prorates the tax by month, so if you sell in March you should owe for three months rather than twelve. To get that proration, you must notify the Commissioner of Revenue within 60 days of the change; wait longer and the refund can be reduced or denied.10Arlington County Virginia Government. You’ll need the date of the change, the buyer’s name and address if the vehicle was sold, and documentation such as a bill of sale, disposal receipt, or proof of registration in a new jurisdiction. Reports can be submitted through the county’s online Personal Property Tax Portal or by email to the Commissioner of Revenue.

When the Bill Is Due and What Late Costs

Vehicle personal property tax is due October 5 each year. If that date lands on a weekend, the deadline moves to the next business day.2Arlington County Virginia Government. You can pay online through the Customer Assessment and Payment Portal (CAPP) by credit card or e-check, by mail, or in person at the Treasurer’s Office.11Arlington County Virginia Government. Late payment triggers a 10% penalty (minimum $10) plus 10% annual interest starting the day after the due date.11Arlington County Virginia Government. Real Estate Taxes and Payments On a $500 bill, that’s $50 in penalty plus roughly $4 a month in interest. Set a reminder for early October.

If You Own a Business in Arlington

The same tax reaches business tangible personal property: furniture, fixtures, machinery, tools, and programmable computer equipment located in Arlington.12Arlington County.
