Arnoldo Jimenez Case: Charges, Monterrey Capture, and Current Status

The Arnoldo Jimenez case centers on the 2012 killing of Estrella Carrera, who was found stabbed to death in her Burbank, Illinois apartment less than 24 hours after marrying Jimenez. He fled to Mexico, spent nearly 13 years as a fugitive, and rose to number four on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list before Mexican authorities arrested him in Monterrey on January 30, 2025. He was returned to the United States on June 18, 2026, and is being held without bond in Cook County on a first-degree murder charge.¹²

The Killing of Estrella Carrera

Jimenez and Carrera, 26, were married in a city hall ceremony on Friday, May 11, 2012, and celebrated with a reception afterward. Carrera was the mother of two children, including a 2-year-old son she shared with Jimenez.³

Investigators believe an argument broke out in the early hours of May 12 as the couple rode home in Jimenez’s black 2006 Maserati. According to police, Jimenez stabbed Carrera inside the vehicle and then moved her body to the bathtub of her apartment in the 7800 block of South Rutherford. She had been stabbed more than 18 times.³⁴ When Carrera failed to pick up her children the next day, her family asked Burbank police for a wellness check. Officers found her body on May 13, 2012, still in her wedding reception dress.⁵

Suspicion turned to Jimenez quickly. A sister-in-law reported a call in which he said he had gotten into a “really bad fight” and had “left her bleeding.”⁶⁵⁷

The Maserati itself became central physical evidence. Federal agents later found the car in a Chicago garage belonging to Jimenez’s brother, its interior filled with blood and showing signs of a crude cleanup attempt.⁸⁶ Carrera’s sister Jazmin later told reporters that Jimenez had previously hit and bruised her.⁹

Charges and the Ten Most Wanted Listing

Burbank police obtained an arrest warrant for Jimenez on May 15, 2012. Two days later, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He was charged with first-degree murder in Cook County and indicted by a grand jury in 2017.¹⁷

On May 8, 2019, the FBI added Jimenez to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list as number 522 and offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to his capture.¹⁰⁵

Capture in Monterrey and Return to Chicago

Jimenez was taken into custody without incident in Monterrey, Mexico, on January 30, 2025, by agents of Mexico’s Fiscalía General de la República working with Interpol. By that point he ranked as the fourth-most wanted fugitive on the FBI’s list.¹¹¹

He remained in Mexican custody for roughly 17 months during extradition proceedings. On June 18, 2026, the FBI announced he had been transferred to the United States and brought to Chicago.²

Where the Case Stands Now

Jimenez is being held without bond. A status hearing in Cook County court was scheduled for June 22, 2026, as the first-degree murder case moves through the local system. No trial date has been set, and no plea has been publicly reported.¹²⁷
