At What Age Must Colorado Seniors Take a Driving Test?

There is no age at which seniors have to take a driving test in Colorado. No birthday triggers an automatic road test, written exam, or behind-the-wheel evaluation. What does change with age is the vision requirement at renewal, and separately, the DMV can order any driver of any age to be re-examined when there’s evidence they may not be safe behind the wheel.

What Actually Changes at Age 80

Colorado drivers renew every five years, and most adults can renew online. The renewal itself doesn’t include a road test at any age. The vision rules, though, tighten once you turn 80.

Renewing in person is the same at any age: a DMV technician gives you a basic eye exam on the spot, and no doctor’s paperwork is required.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Mature Drivers

Online renewal is where age matters. Drivers under 80 must certify they’ve had an eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist within the year before renewal.2Justia Law. That’s it for age-based rules. A senior who passes the vision check renews like anyone else.

When an Older Driver Can Still Be Ordered to Test

Age doesn’t put a senior in a testing chair, but behavior can. The DMV has broad authority to order re-examination of any licensed driver when there’s evidence the person may be unable to drive safely.4Colorado Public Law. Colorado Revised Statutes 42-2-111 – Examination of Applicants and Drivers The evidence can come from a few directions:

  • A law enforcement officer can file a re-examination request (Form DR 2536) after a traffic stop, accident, or observation of unsafe driving, and the form has to detail the specific basis.5Colorado Department of Revenue. 1 CCR 204-30 Rule 03 – Driver License Re-Examination
  • A physician, physician’s assistant, or optometrist can submit a written medical opinion on office letterhead or on the confidential reporting forms (DR 2401 for medical conditions, DR 2402 for vision).5Colorado Department of Revenue. 1 CCR 204-30 Rule 03 – Driver License Re-Examination
  • An immediate family member can email the DMV at dor_mvhelpdesk@state.co.us with the driver’s name and date of birth, the reason for concern, and the requester’s name and relationship.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Concerned for a Loved Ones Safety When Driving

The family route is the one most people are asking about. It works only when the request describes specific circumstances you’ve witnessed. “Dad is 85 and I’m worried” isn’t enough. “Dad drove through two red lights on Colfax on Tuesday and couldn’t remember how to get home from the grocery store” gives the DMV something to act on. It’s also not anonymous. Any driver who gets ordered to retest can find out who reported them by filing a records request and paying the fee.5Colorado Department of Revenue. 1 CCR 204-30 Rule 03 – Driver License Re-Examination

A request isn’t a guaranteed test. The DMV reviews the information first to decide whether the described behavior or medical issue warrants action. If it does, the driver receives a written notice of cancellation, and from the date of that notice has 20 days to complete and pass the required tests to keep driving.5Colorado Department of Revenue. 1 CCR 204-30 Rule 03 – Driver License Re-Examination

What the Re-Examination Looks Like

A full re-examination has three parts, all done at a full-service DMV office:5Colorado Department of Revenue. 1 CCR 204-30 Rule 03 – Driver License Re-Examination

  • An eye examination, the same vision screening used at in-person renewal, with a standard threshold of 20/40 in the better eye.
  • A written knowledge test on current traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices, identical to the one new applicants take.
  • An on-road driving test with a DMV examiner in the car.

Not every DMV location offers the road test, so a driver on the 20-day clock needs to book at one that does.

Failing, Refusing, and Restrictions

Failing the eye exam or the written test within the 20-day window ends in cancellation of the driving privilege, with no extension. The road test has more room: a driver who passes the vision and written portions but fails the drive can buy a 60-day temporary permit and retake the road test during that window. Fail again inside those 60 days and the license is canceled.7Cornell Law Institute. 1 CCR 204-30-03 – Driver License Re-Examination

Ignoring the notice isn’t a workaround. Refusing to submit to the examination is itself grounds for suspension or revocation.4Colorado Public Law. Colorado Revised Statutes 42-2-111 – Examination of Applicants and Drivers

Cancellation isn’t the only possible outcome. Colorado law gives the DMV discretion to let a driver keep the license with restrictions.4Colorado Public Law. Colorado Revised Statutes 42-2-111 – Examination of Applicants and Drivers Common ones include required corrective lenses, daylight-only driving, or driving limited to a specific geographic area.

Appealing the DMV’s Decision

A driver whose license is canceled, suspended, or revoked after a re-examination has the right to appeal to a court of record.4Colorado Public Law. Colorado Revised Statutes 42-2-111 – Examination of Applicants and Drivers It’s a judicial review of the administrative decision, not a new trial, and it fits situations where the process was flawed or the evidence didn’t support the action taken.
