No money has gone out yet from the AT&T $177 million settlement payout. The federal judge overseeing the case held the final approval hearing on January 15, 2026, but as of the most recent official update on April 23, 2026, she has not ruled on whether to approve the deal.1Telecom Data Settlement. Why Payments Have Not Started
Three things have to happen before Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, the court-appointed administrator, can send any money: Judge Ada E. Brown of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas must grant final approval, the window for appeals has to expire, and every claim submitted has to be reviewed.1Telecom Data Settlement. Only the third of those is underway. Kroll is processing the roughly 4.38 million claims filed before the December 18, 2025 deadline.2Bright Defense. MDL 3:24-md-03114 There is no public timeline for a ruling, and an appeal by either side would push distribution back further.
How Much You Can Realistically Expect
The advertised maximums are $5,000 from the first breach fund, $2,500 from the second, and a theoretical combined ceiling of $7,500 for people affected by both.4CBS News. AT&T Data Breach Settlement: How to File a Claim Actual payouts will almost certainly be much lower.
Two things pull the numbers down. First, the caps apply only to claimants who submitted documentation tying specific losses to the breaches; everyone else receives a pro rata share of whatever is left in each fund. Second, attorneys’ fees and costs come off the top. Plaintiffs’ counsel asked the court to approve $59 million in fees, close to a third of the total settlement. The Lanier Law Firm requested $49.67 million and Kopelowitz Ostrow Ferguson Weiselberg Gilbert requested $9.33 million, with roughly $800,000 more in combined litigation expenses.5New Haven Register. Which Fund Covers Which Breach
The $177 million is split into two pools tied to the two 2024 breaches AT&T disclosed.
The $149 million first-breach fund covers customers whose names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, AT&T account passcodes, and billing account numbers surfaced on the dark web in the March 30, 2024 disclosure. That incident affected roughly 7.6 million current customers and 65.4 million former account holders.6ABC7. The $28 million second-breach fund covers the July 12, 2024 disclosure that hackers had downloaded call and text records from a third-party Snowflake cloud platform. The stolen data covered May through October 2022 plus a subset from January 2, 2023, and included phone numbers, numbers contacted, interaction counts, aggregate call durations, and cell site identification numbers for some records. Call and text contents, names, Social Security numbers, and credit card details were not taken.7Mozilla Foundation. AT&T settled without admitting wrongdoing, saying it wanted to avoid the expense and uncertainty of continued litigation.8AL.com.
