Barry Baker Jr.: Sucker Punch, Prison, and Fatal Chase

Barry Baker Jr. was a Pennsylvania man who became nationally known in 2017 after surveillance video caught him mocking and sucker-punching a 22-year-old with cerebral palsy outside a West Chester convenience store. He pleaded guilty to simple assault, was sentenced to three to six years in state prison, and was killed six years later, on April 20, 2023, when he crashed a motorcycle while fleeing Pennsylvania State Police in Chester County.

The 2017 Sucker-Punch Outside a West Chester 7-Eleven

Around 2:30 a.m. on May 10, 2017, Baker, then 29, was inside a 7-Eleven on South High Street in West Chester when Michael Patrick Ryan, a 22-year-old with cerebral palsy, pulled up and parked. Surveillance cameras caught Baker mimicking Ryan’s gait, first in the store and again in the parking lot. When Ryan walked back to his car, Baker punched him in the face without warning, knocking him backward over the hood of his SUV, then ran.¹

Baker’s defense attorney later claimed his client had been drinking and confused Ryan with someone else, but the store video and records from a nearby bar disproved any prior encounter between them.² The clip spread on social media and drew national attention. Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan called Baker “a bully” and said “every decent citizen should be outraged by the defendant’s conduct.”³

The Manhunt and the Family Arrests

Charged with simple assault and released on $25,000 bail, Baker vanished. On May 22, 2017, Hogan announced active bench warrants against him, including one for violating probation on an older theft case and another for failing to appear in a child support matter.⁴ A $5,000 reward was offered, and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force joined the Chester County Sheriff’s Department in the search.⁵

Police found him at a hotel in Uwchlan Township on June 5, 2017, and arrested him without incident. Hogan credited social media tips.⁴

The arrest pulled in two people close to him. His fiancée, Denise Renee Schmidt, was charged on June 27, 2017, with hindering apprehension for paying for the hotel room and a prepaid phone while he was on the run. She later pleaded guilty and received two years’ probation with 200 hours of community service.⁶ The same day, Baker’s father, Barry Baker Sr., was arrested in “Operation Wildfire,” an eight-week Chester County drug sting that netted 46 people, and charged with selling morphine. Hogan noted the timing: “While his son was beating up a man with a disability, Barry Baker Sr. was selling us morphine.”⁷

Guilty Plea and a Judge’s Rebuke

Baker pleaded guilty on September 25, 2017, to simple assault and flight from apprehension. Ryan, asked afterward how the attack had affected him, said simply: “My life’s been the same as it was before that day.”⁸ His father, Patrick Ryan, called Baker’s mistaken-identity story “unbelievable” and said “it’s hard to fix stupid.”⁹

On November 29, 2017, Common Pleas Judge William P. Mahon sentenced Baker to three to six years in state prison: three consecutive one-to-two-year terms for the assault, the flight from apprehension, and a probation violation tied to a 2009 theft case. “You are a bully. You are a predator. You are a coward,” Mahon told him. “In 18 years on the bench I have never had such tangible evidence of someone’s moral compass being so askew.”¹ The judge noted that Baker had pleaded guilty but continued to blame others.¹⁰ Baker addressed the court briefly: “I want this behind me. I want my life back. This will affect me for the rest of my life.” Ryan sat in the courtroom with his mother but did not speak.¹¹

More Charges, More Prison Time

Baker’s record ran well past the Ryan assault. He was already on probation for stealing from parked cars at the time of the 2017 attack, part of what reporting described as a history of “petty crimes and periods of incarceration.”¹² In early December 2017, days after his sentencing, Chester County detectives arrested him again on firearms offenses for allegedly trying to sell three shotguns to a drug dealer. Those charges were later reduced after Baker challenged the vehicle search; he pleaded guilty to two summary counts of disorderly conduct and received probation, though the arrest returned him to state prison on a parole violation.¹⁰

Baker was released from state prison on approximately November 30, 2022. Five months later, at the time of his death, state parole authorities were looking for him after he failed to report.¹⁰

The Fatal 2023 Police Chase

On the afternoon of April 20, 2023, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper from Troop J tried to pull Baker over for speeding on a motorcycle along Route 322 in Honey Brook Township, Chester County. The trooper confirmed Baker had active arrest warrants.¹³ Baker did not stop, and a pursuit began. The motorcycle he was riding had been reported stolen.¹⁰

Baker ran a red light at Route 322 and Chestnut Tree Road and struck a Toyota Highlander SUV.¹⁰ He was not wearing a helmet, was thrown roughly 40 yards from the motorcycle, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chester County Coroner’s Office.¹³ Two people in the SUV had minor injuries and were taken to Reading Hospital.¹⁴

Baker was 34. Born in Coatesville and most recently of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, he had worked as a landscaper in East Fallowfield and was survived by two sons, Barry Baker III and Brantley Baker.¹⁵
