Mike Lynch’s estate is facing lawsuits on two fronts after the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian: a UK civil fraud judgment of roughly £920 million owed to Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and a €456 million claim from the yacht’s builder, The Italian Sea Group. A separate Italian criminal investigation into the crew and a UK coroner’s inquest are still open, and either could shape further claims. The £920 Million HP Judgment
The largest liability has nothing to do with the sinking. It comes from HP’s 2015 civil claim over the 2011 Autonomy acquisition, which HP wrote down by $8.8 billion the year after buying the company. The trial before Mr. Justice Hildyard ran 93 days in the High Court, and on January 28, 2022, the judge announced that HP had “substantially succeeded” on liability, finding “fraud on a grand scale” in how Autonomy had disguised low-margin hardware sales as high-margin software revenue.2Travers Smith. Damages were decided years later. In July 2025, Justice Hildyard ordered Lynch’s estate and former Autonomy CFO Sushovan Hussain to pay HPE more than £700 million (approximately $945 million). The award broke down as over £646 million for losses on the acquisition price, £51.7 million for personal claims of deceit, and $47.5 million for losses suffered by group companies.3The New York Times. Combined with costs and interest, the total figure the estate faces is roughly £920 million. Hussain, who was separately convicted in the United States and sentenced in 2018 to 60 months in prison, settled his portion of the civil case before the damages ruling by paying $104 million to HP without any admission of wrongdoing.5Yahoo Finance. Appeal Refused
On March 24, 2026, the High Court refused the estate permission to appeal on both liability and damages.6Reuters. There is a separate wrinkle in how the estate is being run. Angela Bacares, Lynch’s widow, and the other named executors of his will renounced their roles, citing the need to assess the estate’s solvency before taking on fiduciary responsibility. One point worth noting for anyone tracking Lynch’s overall legal record: the US criminal case ended the other way. On June 6, 2024, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch and co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain on all conspiracy and wire fraud counts after an 11-week trial.8CBS News. The Italian Sea Group’s €456 Million Claim
The lawsuit tied directly to the sinking was filed on January 22, 2026, in the court of Termini Imerese, Sicily. The Italian Sea Group (TISG), which had acquired the Perini Navi brand out of bankruptcy in 2021 for €80 million, is suing for €456 million.9SuperYacht Times. The defendants are Revtom, the Isle of Man-registered company that owned the Bayesian and is legally controlled by Bacares, along with Captain James Cutfield and crew members Timothy Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffiths. TISG says the yacht was “structurally sound” and “effectively unsinkable,” and blames the loss on an “incredible and unspeakable series of very serious errors and omissions” by the crew, specifically their failure to close hatches, respond to weather warnings, and lower the centreboard.10Yacht.de. TISG has publicly clarified that Bacares’s personal position “does not fall within the scope of this initiative,” meaning the claim targets Revtom the corporate owner rather than her individually. Bacares and some victims’ relatives have filed counter-claims against TISG, which the company says “have no legal basis whatsoever.”12Megayacht News. Those MAIB findings cut against TISG’s “unsinkable” characterization. The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch, in an interim report published on May 15, 2025, found that the yacht had stability vulnerabilities not documented in its onboard stability booklet and unknown to the crew or owner. In its “motoring condition” with sails lowered and centreboard raised, the angle of vanishing stability dropped to 70.6 degrees, and a desktop study concluded that gusting beam winds above 63.4 knots could capsize the yacht in that configuration.13UK Government. TISG’s own financial position complicates its damages theory. Its shares fell more than 37 percent in a single day in May 2026 after it disclosed that losses had breached a legal capital threshold under Italian corporate law. The Italian Criminal Investigation
Italian prosecutors in Termini Imerese have placed Captain Cutfield and crew members Eaton and Griffiths under investigation for negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of manslaughter, alleging that the crew acted improperly, underestimated the weather, and failed to correctly activate safety devices.156abc. The estate itself is not a target of the criminal probe. Under Italian law, being “under investigation” does not imply guilt, and no formal indictments have been issued or trial date set as of mid-2026.17Stewarts Law. The Bayesian Superyacht Tragedy: What Next for the Victims The relevance to the estate is indirect: findings against the crew would strengthen TISG’s civil narrative, while findings on the yacht’s design or stability would strengthen the counter-claims.
The UK Inquest and Other Potential Claims
The Suffolk senior coroner opened inquests into the deaths of Mike Lynch, Hannah Lynch, and Jonathan and Judy Bloomer on October 4, 2024. A pre-inquest review was held on April 15, 2025. No full inquest date has been set; the coroner said he would wait until criminal investigations in both Italy and the UK conclude before proceeding.18BBC News. Bayesian Inquest Update
The family of yacht chef Recaldo Thomas, who also died in the sinking, has retained lawyer James Healy-Pratt and raised “serious concerns about a series of failures” involving the yacht’s design, safety certification, and crew management, but has not filed formal legal claims and says it is awaiting the final MAIB report.19The Telegraph. Taken together, the estate’s exposure is dominated by the HP judgment rather than the sinking. The £920 million owed to HPE alone exceeds the estate’s estimated £500 million value, and the TISG claim, if it succeeds even in part, would add to a deficit that already looks unbridgeable.
