Meeting the BCBA requirements in Florida means clearing two separate credentials: the national Board Certified Behavior Analyst certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, and a Florida Licensed Behavior Analyst credential issued by the Florida Board of Medicine under Chapter 491 of the Florida Statutes.1Florida Board of Medicine. The state license layers on background screening and Florida-specific rules, and you cannot practice in Florida on the BACB credential alone.
Graduate Degree and Coursework
You need a master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution. The BACB recognizes two pathways. The first is a degree from a program accredited by the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts or recognized by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. The second is a master’s degree in any field from a qualifying institution, paired with a separate sequence of graduate-level behavior-analytic coursework covering the BACB’s required content areas.2Behavior Analyst Certification Board. If you take the second pathway, the coursework has to be graduate level and completed within ten years of your application. Only classes with a passing grade of C or higher count. Supervised Fieldwork Hours
The BACB offers two fieldwork tracks. Standard supervised fieldwork requires 2,000 hours. Concentrated supervised fieldwork requires 1,500 hours but demands more intensive supervision. Either track, you log between 20 and 130 hours per calendar month, and everything must be finished within five continuous years. At least 60% of your total hours must involve unrestricted activities: observations, data analysis, program development, and training staff or caregivers. Supervision intensity is where the two tracks split. On the standard track, at least 5% of your monthly hours are supervised, with four supervisor contacts per month minimum. On the concentrated track, that rises to 10% supervision and six contacts per month. Both tracks require at least one observation of you working with a client each month, and at least half of your supervised hours must be individual rather than group supervision.2Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The BCBA Exam
Once the BACB approves your education and fieldwork documentation, you become eligible to sit for the BCBA exam. It’s a multiple-choice test covering the full scope of behavior-analytic practice, from measurement and data analysis through ethics and supervision. The BACB allows up to eight attempts within a two-year authorization period, with a 30-day wait between attempts. Passing triggers the BACB to grant your national certification, and that certification is the prerequisite for applying to Florida.
Applying for the Florida LBA License
Anyone practicing behavior analysis in Florida needs a state license, regardless of national BCBA status. The credential is the Licensed Behavior Analyst designation, administered by the Florida Board of Medicine through the Department of Health under Chapter 491.1Florida Board of Medicine. Licensing
Start with the Department of Health’s application forms and fees. You’ll submit proof of your current, active BCBA certification in good standing. If you’ve held a professional license in any other state, you must also provide verification of good standing from those authorities. Florida law requires initial applications to be reviewed within 30 days, though actual processing depends on whether your documentation is complete.1Florida Board of Medicine. Because the Board of Medicine sets and revises fees between licensure cycles, check the current schedule at flboardofmedicine.gov before you send anything in.
Background Screening and Fingerprints
Every initial applicant under Chapter 491 undergoes a criminal background check. Electronic fingerprinting runs through a vendor approved by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and prints are processed at the state level by FDLE and federal level by the FBI. FDLE retains your fingerprints and enrolls them in a national arrest notification program, so any future criminal activity flags your license record automatically.4Florida Senate. You pay all costs. The fingerprint retention fee is $43.25, collected by FDLE.5Florida Board of Medicine. Renewal Fees Certain offenses, including battery against a vulnerable adult or a patient in a licensed facility, can disqualify you from licensure entirely.4Florida Senate. Keeping Both Credentials Current
After you’re licensed, you have two renewal obligations on parallel tracks. Both run on two-year cycles, but the deadlines will not necessarily align. Keep a separate calendar for each.
BACB Renewal
The BACB requires 32 continuing education units per two-year cycle. At least 4 of those must cover ethics. If you supervise trainees or other practitioners, add 3 CEUs in supervision.2Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Board Certified Behavior Analyst Handbook
Florida License Renewal
The Florida LBA license requires 30 hours of continuing education per biennial cycle. That includes 2 hours on Florida laws and rules governing behavior analysis and a 2-hour course on the prevention of medical errors. State-mandated topics can double-count toward your BACB CEUs if the course is approved by both bodies, which is worth planning around.
Renewal means submitting proof of completed CEUs and paying the renewal fee to the Board of Medicine. The $43.25 fingerprint retention fee may also be collected at renewal if your retention is expiring during that period.5Florida Board of Medicine. Renewal Fees Letting the license lapse past its expiration puts you in delinquent status, with higher reactivation fees and a stretch where you cannot legally practice.
A Note on the FL-CBA Designation
You’ll see the Florida Certified Behavior Analyst credential in older materials. It’s a legacy certification the BACB inherited in 2003 from a defunct Florida Department of Children and Families program. FL-CBAs carry the same responsibilities and privileges as BCBAs but the designation is valid only in Florida. If an FL-CBA’s certification expires, they have to reapply under current BCBA requirements; there’s no simplified pathway.6Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Getting Ready to Bill Insurance
Licensure alone won’t let you collect insurance reimbursement for ABA services. Two more registrations are effectively required.
National Provider Identifier
Apply for a Type 1 (individual) NPI through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System at nppes.cms.hhs.gov. You’ll provide personal information, your practice location, and at least one provider taxonomy code. For behavior analysts, the code is 103K00000X.7NPPES (CMS). Apply for an NPI8NUCC. Individual or Groups (of Individuals) – NUCC Taxonomy Codes You’ll also enter your Florida LBA license number in the taxonomy section. The NPI is free and doesn’t expire, but you’re responsible for keeping the record current if you change practice locations or names.
Insurance Credentialing
Most insurance companies require a CAQH Provider Data Portal profile before they’ll credential you as in-network. The profile collects your education, professional IDs, practice locations, malpractice insurance details, professional references, and licensing information. Credentialing itself typically takes 60 to 120 days per payer. Start it as soon as your Florida license is in hand. Waiting until you have clients ready to treat is the most common mistake new BCBAs make, and it can cost months of unbillable services.
