Becky Sears Today: Conviction, Sentence, and Her Son

Becky Sears is today an inmate in the Georgia prison system, serving life without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the 2009 beating death of her next-door neighbor and best friend, Kay Parsons, in Grovetown, Georgia. She pleaded guilty in May 2012 to malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery, and burglary, and she will not be released.¹

What She Was Convicted Of

Sears manipulated her own son, Christopher Bowers, into killing Kay Parsons so she could pursue a relationship with Kay’s husband, David Parsons. She and David had carried on an affair for close to a year before he ended it. Kay had learned about it, and the couple was reportedly trying to work through the marriage.²

On the morning of March 25, 2009, Kay Parsons, 41, dropped her son at school and returned to her home at 229 Hot Springs Drive. She was found severely beaten in the garage. Investigators recovered a bloody hammer and baseball bat at the scene, and a blood trail ran from a broken glass door through the hallways into the garage.³ She was taken off life support and died the next day.² A gold necklace and a watch were taken from the home to make the killing look like a robbery.⁴

The next day, Sears called 911 claiming she had been shot in the leg by a man demanding money outside her workplace, Healing Hands Physical Therapy. Investigators quickly concluded the shooting was staged.⁵ Two days after the murder, Sears’ brother, Jerry Jacobs, contacted investigators from the Columbia County jail and told them about his sister’s affair with David Parsons. The tip redirected the case. Detectives then found blood smears at Sears’ own home and a box in the attic of her mother’s house holding Bowers’ blood-stained clothing.²

Sears confessed under interrogation. She told police she wanted Kay Parsons “out of the way” so she could be with David, and she described how she used her son: “I didn’t want him to harm anybody and I made him think that he did. He was convicted that he was helping me.”² David Parsons was in California for work at the time of the attack, cooperated with investigators, passed a polygraph, and was never charged.³

The Sentence She Is Serving

Prosecutors initially intended to seek the death penalty.⁶ On May 11, 2012, Sears entered a negotiated guilty plea to avoid a capital trial. She was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder, a consecutive life sentence for armed robbery, and an additional consecutive 20 years for burglary.¹

No publicly reported appeals or parole petitions have emerged in the years since. The structure of the sentence forecloses release.

What Happened to Her Son

Christopher Bowers, the son Sears directed to carry out the killing, pleaded guilty at the same May 2012 hearing and received the same sentence: life without parole for murder, a consecutive life term for armed robbery, and a consecutive 20 years for burglary.¹ Sears also identified Bowers as the person who shot her in the leg in the staged workplace incident, though Bowers himself has never acknowledged involvement in that event.³

Why the Case Is Back in the News

The case drew renewed national attention on May 15, 2026, when ABC’s 20/20 aired an episode about it called “Murder Next Door.” The broadcast featured retired Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Staff Sergeant Thomas Harper and lead investigator Jimmy Edmunds. Neither Sears nor Bowers was interviewed from prison.³
