Belinda Stronach Lawsuit: Countersuit, Settlement, and New Claims

The Belinda Stronach lawsuit story is really two lawsuits, both filed by her own relatives and both settled without a trial. In October 2018, her father Frank Stronach sued her for C$520 million, accusing her of taking covert control of the family empire; she countersued in January 2019, alleging his own ventures had cost the family roughly C$850 million. That case settled in August 2020 with the assets divided between them. A parallel suit brought by her brother Andrew and niece Selena in 2019 settled on confidential terms in September 2024. Belinda remains chairman, CEO, and president of The Stronach Group.1CBC News. Stronach Group Lawsuit Settled

What Frank Stronach Alleged in 2018

On October 1, 2018, Frank Stronach filed suit in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against Belinda, Stronach Group CEO Alon Ossip, and two of his grandchildren, Nicole Walker and Frank Walker, who had served as trustees of family assets. Belinda’s Countersuit

In January 2019, Belinda filed a statement of defence and a countersuit. Her filings said Frank’s “fanciful schemes” and financial mismanagement had cost the family empire about C$850 million, with hundreds of millions likely lost for good. Among the ventures she cited was C$55 million spent on two 12-story bronze Pegasus statues for a horse racing course.5Thoroughbred Daily News. She framed the dispute as a “fundamental disagreement over the proper test to be applied to managing the business and affairs of TSG.” Under her leadership, she said, racing and gaming revenue had doubled from US$555 million in 2012 to more than US$1.1 billion in 2017, while the breeding, training, and racing operations under Frank’s direction had run up US$156.9 million in operating losses since 2010.5Thoroughbred Daily News. How the 2020 Settlement Divided the Empire

On August 13, 2020, Belinda and Frank announced an out-of-court settlement that split the family businesses. Belinda kept The Stronach Group as chairwoman and president, holding on to its horse racing, gaming, real estate, and related assets. Frank and his wife Elfriede took full ownership of all European assets, all North American farm operations, and the family’s stallion and breeding business. In a joint statement, Frank said he had “utmost confidence” in the businesses staying under Belinda’s management.7Global News. Stronach Family Lawsuits Settlement

The Andrew and Selena Stronach Lawsuit

The settlement with Frank did not end the family’s litigation. In 2019, Frank’s son Andrew Stronach and granddaughter Selena Stronach filed their own suit against Belinda, her children, Ossip, and The Stronach Group. They alleged that family wealth had been mismanaged and distributed unevenly, that hundreds of millions had been wasted on questionable ventures, and they sought a full accounting of how family funds had been spent.8The Globe and Mail. Stronachs Resolve Five-Year Court Battle Over Alleged Mismanagement

In July 2024, Selena Stronach filed a motion to compel The Stronach Group to hand over documents including non-disclosure agreements and payment records tied to sexual misconduct allegations against Frank Stronach. The argument was that if corporate assets had been used to conceal Frank’s conduct, executives such as Belinda and Ossip would have known about it. Defence lawyers called the motion a “cascade of conjecture” and a tactical attempt at embarrassment.9CBC News. A New Lawsuit Naming The Stronach Group

In October 2025, a class-action complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York against The Stronach Group, its subsidiaries AmTote International and Elite Turf Club, and other racing industry entities. The suit alleges the defendants operated a scheme to manipulate pari-mutuel betting pools by giving high-volume bettors on computer-assisted wagering platforms preferential access, faster connection speeds, and effective rebates that disadvantaged ordinary bettors. The plaintiff invokes the federal RICO statute and has demanded a jury trial.14ClassAction.org. Dickey v. The Stronach Group Inc. et al. The case is pending.
