Benjamin Beale Case: Reduced Charge, Plea Terms, and Sentence

Benjamin Beale accepted a plea deal on February 3, 2026, pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2021 killing of Julia Dardar and receiving a 30-year prison sentence from Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Judge Benedict Willard. Prosecutors dropped every other count in the indictment and reduced the original second-degree murder charge, which would have carried mandatory life without parole, to manslaughter.1FOX 8. Why Prosecutors Reduced the Murder Charge

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams pointed to two reasons for accepting a manslaughter plea instead of taking the case to trial on second-degree murder. First, his office concluded there was a “real possibility” the defense could succeed with an insanity plea, which could have led to acquittal on the murder charge outright. Second, the office reached the agreement in close consultation with Julia Dardar’s family, who supported it to avoid a trial that carried no guaranteed conviction.3FOX 8. Mental health had been signaled as the central defense strategy early on. When Beale was indicted in May 2022, defense attorney Billy Sothern told The Associated Press his client would plead not guilty and that the defense was investigating issues related to Beale’s mental health.4NOLA.com. What the Agreement Requires

The plea has three main conditions beyond the 30-year sentence, which carries credit for time served. Beale had to verbally accept responsibility for Julia Dardar’s death in open court. He waived his right to appeal the conviction. And while the deal does not preclude future parole eligibility, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office has committed to opposing any parole bid Beale files.3FOX 8. The Family’s Response

Julia Dardar’s family agreed to the plea, but their public reaction was not one of satisfaction. Her estranged husband, Micah Dardar, said in a statement, “I do not believe the final outcome reflects the full weight of this crime,” and that “a crime this horrific deserved the fullest measure of justice the system could deliver.”6WDSU. He directed his criticism at the system rather than the individual prosecutors or detectives who worked the case, describing public institutions as “under-resourced” and “underpowered” in the cases where society needs them most, and calling for better tools, staffing, and support for grave violent crimes.6WDSU. How the Case Got Here

Julia Dardar, a 36-year-old mother of two, had been living with Beale at his home on the 2300 block of Pauline Street in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans by late 2021. Micah Dardar reported her missing on December 23, 2021.7WDSU. On January 11, 2022, officers executing a search warrant at the property found a deep freezer inside an old school bus parked in the backyard. It contained a headless torso later identified by the Orleans Parish coroner as Julia Dardar. The coroner determined she died from blunt force injuries of the head and neck with asphyxia due to manual strangulation.9FOX 8. Where Beale Is Now

As of March 2026, Beale has been transferred from the Orleans Justice Center to a state prison facility to serve his 30-year sentence. Court records marked the case closed on February 6, 2026. He cannot appeal the conviction under the terms of the deal, and the district attorney’s office has pledged to oppose any future parole request.1FOX 8.
