The complaint said the blender was built with substandard materials: blades that could deform, shatter, or detach, cables that melted, and batteries that overheated and ignited.1ClassAction.org. The plaintiffs argued BlendJet knew about the defects from CPSC complaints and retail reviews but kept marketing the product as safe for daily use.
The claims included breach of express and implied warranties, violations of New York General Business Law §§ 349 and 350 for deceptive practices and false advertising, and violations of other state consumer protection statutes on behalf of the nationwide class. The Recall and Which Units Were Covered
On December 28, 2023, the CPSC announced a voluntary recall of approximately 4.8 million BlendJet 2 units in the United States and about 117,000 in Canada.3U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Two defects drove the recall. The 0.8mm blades lacked the strength for intensive use and could break apart during blending, sending metal fragments into food. At the time of the recall, the CPSC documented about 329 reports of blades breaking during use, 17 reports of overheating or fires causing roughly $150,000 in property damage, 49 reports of minor burns, and one laceration.3U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. BlendJet’s fix was thicker blades and an improved electrical configuration in the base.4Fox Business. Where Consumers Stand After the Shutdown
Many people who disabled their blenders never received replacements, with some reports of customers waiting more than 20 months.6KSL-TV.
