Breanna Evans in the I-95 Shooting: Charges, Bond, Self-Defense

Breanna Evans, a 26-year-old woman from Delray Beach, is being held without bond on two counts of attempted murder and two firearms felonies after prosecutors say she shot a box truck driver in the head during a road rage confrontation on Interstate 95 near Boca Raton on October 29, 2025. The I-95 shooting attributed to Breanna Evans left the victim hospitalized with a bullet wound above his left temple; he was expected to recover. Evans, through her attorney, says she fired in self-defense.¹

What Happened on I-95

Around 4:30 p.m. on October 29, 2025, Evans was driving a black Chevrolet Equinox northbound on I-95 near the Broward–Palm Beach county line, in the area of Palmetto Park Road and Hillsboro Boulevard.² According to prosecutors, she became frustrated with a man driving a white box truck in the fast lane, weaved through traffic, cut him off, and sideswiped his truck.³

The truck driver pulled over and got out to check on Evans. He told investigators her window was shattered and that she was holding a black and purple Glock, cursing at him and threatening to shoot. He retreated to his truck and then realized he had been hit. A bullet had struck him just above the left temple, and deputies found a bullet hole through the driver’s side of the cab.² Boca Raton Fire Rescue transported him to a local hospital as a trauma alert.⁴ Investigators said Evans and the driver were strangers.¹ The victim has not been publicly named.

The Charges

The Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested Evans and booked her into the Broward County Main Jail on four felonies:³

Two counts of attempted murder
Shooting into an occupied vehicle, a second-degree felony under Florida Statute 790.19⁵
Shooting from a vehicle, a second-degree felony under Florida Statute 790.15⁶

The attempted murder counts are the most serious of the four and carry substantial prison time upon conviction.

Held Without Bond

Evans appeared in bond court on Thursday, October 30, 2025. Prosecutors asked that she be held without bond, calling her a “significant threat to the community.” The judge found probable cause on all charges, denied bond, entered a no-contact order protecting the victim, and prohibited Evans from possessing firearms.¹

Her defense attorney told the court Evans “was in fear for her life” and believed she was being followed by the victim and a second man, and noted she is a “single female” with “no prior record.”¹

Prosecutors offered a different account. They said Evans told investigators she reached for a gun on her passenger seat and fired because she did not like the way the victim was driving in the fast lane.¹

Why Self-Defense Is a Hard Sell in a Road Rage Case

Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, at Section 776.012, allows the use of deadly force without a duty to retreat if a person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent imminent death, great bodily harm, or a forcible felony. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Florida Highway Patrol have said the law is not a defense to road rage incidents.⁷ Courts have taken the same line. In February 2026, an Osceola County judge denied a Stand Your Ground immunity claim in a separate road rage case, ruling that the defendant who introduced a weapon during a traffic dispute “had no legal justification” for using force.⁸ Rulings in this area tend to turn on who escalated the encounter; a person who initiates the confrontation has a harder time arguing that deadly force was a reasonable last resort.

That is the frame the prosecution has built for Evans. Their sequence has her weaving, cutting off the truck, causing the collision, and then firing. If a jury accepts that account, the self-defense theory becomes difficult to sustain.

Where the Case Stands

Evans remains in custody at the Broward County Main Jail without bond. The Broward Sheriff’s Office described the investigation as active and ongoing, with assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol and the Boca Raton Police Department.⁴ The victim was recuperating and expected to survive.¹
