Brendan Banfield’s trial ended on February 2, 2026, with a Fairfax County jury convicting the former IRS special agent on all counts for the February 24, 2023, murders of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan; on June 5, 2026, Judge Penney Azcarate sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus eight consecutive years, and the court appointed an appellate attorney the same day. The verdict, sentencing, and appeal in the Brendan Banfield trial together close the trial court chapter of a case prosecutors described as a catfishing scheme designed to let Banfield leave his marriage and remain with the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães.1CNN. How the Jury Got There
The prosecution’s theory was that Banfield began an affair with Magalhães in August 2022 and wanted to be with her without paying for a divorce or sharing custody of his daughter. Starting that fall, prosecutors said, he and Magalhães used Christine’s laptop to create a fake FetLife profile under the name “Annastasia9,” posed as Christine, and over months lured Joseph Ryan to the Herndon home, instructing him to arrive with restraints, rope, and a knife to act out what he believed was a consensual sexual fantasy. The final message to Ryan read, prosecutors told the jury: “Christine will be asleep in bed. Come straight upstairs. Cut off the clothing. Tie her. Rape her.”1CNN. The prosecution’s central witness was Magalhães herself, who testified on the first day of trial under a cooperation agreement. She told the jury Banfield entered the primary bedroom on the morning of February 24, 2023, announced himself as a police officer, shot Ryan in the head with his IRS service weapon, and then used the knife Ryan had brought to repeatedly stab Christine. When she observed Ryan still moving, she said, Banfield directed her to fire the second, fatal shot.7WJLA. Beyond her testimony, jurors saw surveillance footage placing Banfield at a nearby McDonald’s as Ryan arrived, bloodstain pattern analysis the Commonwealth said showed staging, phone records, and digital forensics linking the “Annastasia9” accounts to Christine’s devices at times consistent with Banfield’s access.2Court TV. Carroll’s defense was that Banfield walked into the bedroom, found Ryan attacking his wife, and shot him. The Sentence
Sentencing took place on June 5, 2026. For the aggravated murder convictions, Judge Azcarate imposed life in prison without the possibility of parole. She added three consecutive years for the firearms charge and five consecutive years for child endangerment.15DC News Now. Brendan Banfield Sentencing in Au Pair Affair Double Murder Trial
From the bench, Azcarate told Banfield: “The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse. It reflects evil, which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life.” She also addressed his trial testimony directly: “To testify as you did shows the court that you still think that you are the smartest person in the room.”7WJLA. Brendan Banfield Sentenced to Life in Prison Banfield addressed the court as well, saying, “I was found guilty of a crime that I did not commit.”15DC News Now. Three family members gave impact statements before the sentence was imposed. Christine’s sister, Danielle Hocker, called Banfield’s trial testimony “the most self-serving display of narcissism I have ever witnessed.” Joseph Ryan’s mother, Deirdre Fisher, speaking remotely, said: “He had a face, he had a name, he had a life, but Brendan Banfield shot his face, soiled his name, and treated his life as disposable.”7WJLA. The Appeal
The day before sentencing, Judge Azcarate denied a defense motion to throw out the jury’s verdict. Carroll had argued that prosecutors failed to correct false statements in Magalhães’s testimony, violated the rule on witnesses, and improperly cited Banfield’s pre-arrest silence as evidence of guilt. The judge rejected all three claims; on the pre-arrest silence point, prosecutors had argued it was not protected by Miranda because it preceded his arrest.17NBC Washington. After imposing sentence, Judge Azcarate appointed Banfield an appellate attorney. Carroll, his trial counsel, will not handle the appeal. Under Virginia law, Banfield has 30 days from his sentencing date to file. As of the sentencing hearing, no appellate filings had been made and the appointed attorney had not been publicly named.16WTOP. Brendan Banfield Faces Mandatory Life in Prison3NBC Washington. Where the Co-Defendant’s Case Stands
Banfield’s trial resolved only his own charges. Magalhães, arrested on October 19, 2023, and initially charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, pleaded guilty on October 29, 2024, to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter for Ryan’s shooting death under a cooperation agreement.18Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
