Brian Cole Jr. Pipe Bomb Case: Confession, Charges, No Bond

Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old man from Woodbridge, Virginia, is the person the FBI says planted the two pipe bombs outside the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., on the night of January 5, 2021. Arrested on December 4, 2025, after a nearly five-year investigation, Cole confessed to building, transporting, and placing the devices, telling agents he believed the 2020 election had been “tampered with.” He has pleaded not guilty, is being held without bond, and faces charges that now include a weapons-of-mass-destruction count carrying a possible life sentence.¹

What Cole Placed and Where

On the evening of January 5, 2021, surveillance cameras captured a hooded figure in dark gloves and Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes walking between the RNC and DNC buildings in southeast Washington. The person set a pipe bomb in the bushes outside each headquarters. Neither device was spotted until roughly 1:00 p.m. the next afternoon, as rioters were breaching the Capitol about a mile away. The U.S. Capitol Police Hazardous Devices Section neutralized both bombs before they detonated.¹

The FBI later described the devices as “viable” and capable of causing “serious injury or death.”² The DNC bomb came dangerously close to then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. A Department of Homeland Security inspector general report later found that Harris’s motorcade had passed within 20 feet of the device that morning, that Secret Service advance sweeps had not covered the outside area where it was planted, and that it took agents 10 minutes to evacuate her after the bomb was discovered.³ The discovery also pulled law enforcement resources away at a critical moment, contributing to the security failure at the Capitol.

How the FBI Identified Him

The identity of the pipe bomber was one of the highest-profile unsolved threads from January 6. The FBI reviewed roughly 39,000 video files, conducted more than 1,000 interviews, and processed over 600 tips. The reward climbed from $50,000 to $500,000.⁴

FBI Director Kash Patel said that after taking over in early 2025 he made the case a “high priority” and brought in a “new set of experts” to go “back over every fact and every data point looking for new leads.”¹ That re-examination stitched together several strands of evidence pointing at Cole:

Credit card and bank records showed him buying galvanized pipes and white kitchen-style timers, consistent with the devices, at northern Virginia retailers in 2019 and 2020.⁵
A license plate reader captured his 2017 Nissan Sentra near the South Capitol Street exit from I-395 South at about 7:10 p.m. on January 5, less than half a mile from where the suspect first appeared on foot.¹
The FBI’s Cellular Analysis and Survey Team placed Cole’s phone in contact with towers near the RNC and DNC between 7:39 p.m. and 8:24 p.m., matching the suspect’s route on video.¹
A search of Cole’s home turned up bomb components.⁶

Agents executed a search warrant at his Woodbridge home on the morning of December 4, 2025, and arrested him.⁴ Prosecutors later noted that in the years between the bombing and the arrest, Cole had wiped his personal cellphone “nearly a thousand times.”⁷

What Cole Told Investigators

Cole spoke with FBI agents for more than four hours after his arrest.⁸ He denied involvement at first, saying he had driven to Washington on January 5 to attend a protest about the 2020 election. Investigators then showed him surveillance footage of the hooded figure with the backpack. According to court documents, Cole “paused for approximately 15 seconds, placed his head face down on the table,” and admitted he was the person in the video.⁹

He described his motive in political terms. He was “fed up with both political parties,” believed the 2020 election had been stolen, and targeted the party headquarters because “they were in charge.” Something “just snapped,” he said, and “someone needs to speak up” for people who felt the election had been tampered with. Cole told agents he stowed the bombs in a shoebox in the back seat of his Nissan Sentra and set each timer for 60 minutes.¹⁰

His account of his own intent is contested. Cole said he was “pretty relieved” the devices had not gone off and that he planted them at night because he did not want to kill anyone.¹⁰ Prosecutors, though, said Cole had also told the FBI he had hoped the bombs would detonate.¹¹ He also acknowledged researching bomb-making using YouTube videos and video games.⁷

The Charges He Faces

Cole was first charged on December 4, 2025, with two federal counts: transporting an explosive device in interstate commerce with intent to kill, injure, or intimidate, which carries up to 20 years and a five-year mandatory minimum, and attempted malicious destruction by fire and explosive materials, which carries up to 10 years.¹¹ A federal grand jury returned an indictment on those counts on January 6, 2026.¹²

On April 15, 2026, prosecutors filed a superseding indictment adding two felony counts: attempting to use weapons of mass destruction and carrying out an act of terrorism while armed.¹³¹⁴ The weapons-of-mass-destruction charge, brought under 18 U.S.C. § 2332a, carries a potential sentence of life in prison.¹⁵

Cole pleaded not guilty to the original charges. As of mid-2026 he had not yet been formally arraigned on the new counts.¹³

Held Without Bond

Cole has been jailed since his arrest. After a detention hearing on December 30, Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh denied release on January 2, 2026, finding that Cole “poses an intolerable risk of danger to the community.” The court also rejected a defense plan to place him in the custody of his grandmother, Loretta Cole-Donnette, under home confinement with GPS monitoring.¹²¹¹

U.S. District Judge Amir Ali, who is presiding, affirmed the detention order on January 16 and again on January 29, concluding that “no condition or combination of conditions of release would reasonably assure the safety of the community.”¹⁶ The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit affirmed on April 30, 2026.¹⁷

The Defense’s Theory

In court filings around April 1, 2026, Cole’s lawyers signaled that they may try to pin the bombing on Shauni Kerkhoff, a former U.S. Capitol Police officer who now works for the CIA.¹⁸ The theory came from Blaze Media reports that had accused Kerkhoff based on a “forensic gait analysis” claiming a “94% match” with the suspect. The Blaze retracted the report after Cole’s arrest.¹⁹

The FBI had already investigated Kerkhoff and cleared her; she produced evidence that she was at home when the devices were planted, and the Justice Department formally rejected the theory.¹⁹ The filing also drew a separate problem: prosecutors asked the court to hold Cole’s attorneys in contempt for publishing Kerkhoff’s home address in the public docket, and the filing referencing the theory was later removed.²⁰²¹ Kerkhoff filed a 127-page defamation lawsuit against Blaze Media and the reporters behind the original story in April 2026.

What Happens Next

Defense attorneys have said trial could begin as early as December 2026, but as of June 2026, Judge Ali had not set a date.¹² Cole remains jailed pending arraignment on the superseding weapons-of-mass-destruction and armed-terrorism counts, the most serious of which allows a life sentence on conviction.¹⁵
