Brian Hyatt is a former Arkansas psychiatrist and onetime chairman of the Arkansas State Medical Board who now faces criminal charges in both state and federal court over his years running the behavioral health unit at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale. A federal grand jury indicted him in March 2026 on conspiracy to commit kidnapping and conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, alleging he and seven co-defendants held psychiatric patients against their will and drugged them so the hospital could bill for care that was unnecessary or never provided. Hyatt earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2004 and practiced in the Rogers and Springdale area of northwest Arkansas. Then-Governor Asa Hutchinson appointed him to the state medical board in 2019, and he later chaired it.2Arkansas Times. What Prosecutors Say Happened at Northwest Medical Center
Federal and state charging documents describe a conspiracy running from roughly February 2018 through May 2022 with a single financial goal: keep patients confined past any medical need so Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurers could be billed for services that were either unneeded or never delivered.54029 News. Arkansas law generally limits an involuntary psychiatric hold to 72 hours without a court order. Prosecutors say staff worked around that ceiling by pressuring patients who lacked the capacity to consent into signing “voluntary” admission forms. Patients who tried to leave were reportedly threatened, denied phone access, moved to more restrictive parts of the unit, or forcibly injected with sedatives.6Yahoo News. The indictment names Haldol, Ativan, Thorazine, and Zyprexa as drugs allegedly administered for “punishment, coercion, discipline, retaliation and for staff convenience.”54029 News. Records themselves are part of the case. Prosecutors say staff used “copy and paste” notes to fabricate charts and conceal that no meaningful treatment was occurring. An internal message from one co-defendant reportedly acknowledged that roughly 90 percent of the notes were produced this way and that Hyatt kept patients longer than medically necessary.6Yahoo News. The indictment also describes physical violence. Former mental health technician Collyn Harlan is accused of an act of abuse in November 2020 that allegedly left a patient with a permanent facial scar. An internal message from former unit director Miranda Newburn reportedly said of the patient, “He’ll have a permanent scar on his face,” and described Harlan as having a “temper.”7Fox 16. In a separate state case in March 2023, Harlan and another former employee, Isaiah Morris, were arrested on felony charges of abuse of an endangered or impaired person, with allegations that included fracturing a patient’s ribs.8KNWA. The State Medicaid Fraud Case
Arkansas moved first. Hyatt was arrested on a warrant on October 9, 2023. Attorney General Tim Griffin announced two counts of Class A felony Medicaid fraud on November 29, 2023, alleging that Hyatt submitted more than $300,000 in fraudulent Medicaid claims between January 1 and April 29, 2022.9KNWA. The case has slid repeatedly. A jury trial first set for September 2024 moved to October 20, 2025, then came off the calendar when the state requested a mental fitness evaluation.11KNWA. His defense attorney, Erin Cassinelli, announced plans to challenge that ruling, then moved to withdraw on April 30, 2026. The Federal Indictment
A federal grand jury in the Western District of Arkansas returned a two-count indictment on March 11, 2026, naming Hyatt and seven co-defendants: advanced practice registered nurses Devon Talbert and Lindsey Hess Goucher, former unit director and registered nurse Miranda Newburn, former admissions coordinator Robert Green, and former mental health technicians Georgette “Gigi” Rice, Owen “Juice” Benjamin, and Collyn Harlan. All eight are charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping; Hyatt and Talbert also face the controlled substance conspiracy count. The kidnapping conspiracy charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.3KNWA. U.S. Marshals arrested Hyatt on March 28, 2026. He and three co-defendants were arraigned in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville on April 1, 2026, with the remaining four appearing on April 6. All eight pleaded not guilty. Every co-defendant except Hyatt was released on a $10,000 bond, and Hyatt had a bond hearing scheduled for April 10. A trial date of June 9, 2026, was set, though defense attorneys have already moved to push it back, citing roughly two terabytes of evidence, close to 300 witness interviews, and grand jury records.13KNWA. Hyatt’s Own Mental Health and Involuntary Commitment
Hyatt’s mental health has shaped the timeline. His then-wife, Angela Hyatt, filed for divorce in April 2025 and later sought an order of protection on July 3, 2025, stating he had been in an “acute medical crisis” since that spring. His defense described “concerning mental health symptoms” dating to a fall in November 2024 that worsened over time. Medical providers filed for commitment in early July 2025, and an involuntary commitment petition was approved on July 10, ordering up to 45 days of inpatient treatment. As of August 2025, Hyatt was still receiving inpatient psychiatric care.14Arkansas Business. Civil Lawsuits and the Hospital’s Settlement
Civil claims against Hyatt have expanded steadily. Early reporting in May 2023 counted 12 actions covering 68 former patients. By 2025 he faced more than 200 lawsuits, and by 2026 the figure had grown past 300.17Arkansas Advocate. Karla Adrian-Caceres was allegedly held for three days while the hospital ignored two court orders for her release until a deputy sheriff intervened. William VanWhy was held for four days without medical care before a deputy secured his release. At least one lawsuit alleges a premature discharge led to a patient’s suicide.
Northwest Medical Center itself agreed to repay $1,112,631 to Arkansas Medicaid for 249 claims deemed unjustifiable for lack of documentation. Where Things Stand
As of mid-2026, Hyatt is held at the Washington County Detention Center and is fighting parallel proceedings. In the state Medicaid fraud case he is without counsel after his attorney’s withdrawal, with a hearing on new representation set for June 9, 2026. In the federal case, all eight defendants have pleaded not guilty and a June 9, 2026 trial date is on the calendar, though continuances are expected given the scale of the evidence.12KNWA.
