Brianna Williams is a former U.S. Navy petty officer who is serving a life sentence in Florida for the second-degree murder of her five-year-old daughter, Taylor Rose Williams. In November 2019, she called the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and reported Taylor missing from their home, setting off an Amber Alert and a multistate search. Taylor was already dead. Investigators found her remains in a shallow grave in rural Alabama, and evidence later showed the child had not been seen alive by anyone outside the household since the spring of that year. Williams pleaded guilty in March 2022 and was sentenced to life in prison on September 20, 2022, by Circuit Court Judge Kevin Blazs.
The False Missing-Child Report
On November 6, 2019, Williams told officers that she had last seen Taylor around midnight and woke at 7:00 a.m. to find her gone. She pointed to an unlocked back door. Neighbors told police they had not seen Taylor in weeks or months, contradicting Williams’ account that the child had been in the home that morning. What Actually Happened to Taylor
Taylor was last seen alive by neighbors in April 2019 and stopped attending daycare that same month.4Yahoo News. After May 2019, no one outside the household reported seeing her alive. Neighbor Carlos Johnson testified he never saw Taylor again after May 15, and that Williams told him the child was with her grandparents in Alabama. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences autopsy found no evidence of trauma or significant disease and no drugs in Taylor’s system. Because the remains were badly deteriorated and had been scavenged by animals, the cause and manner of death were listed as undetermined. The examiner estimated Taylor had been dead for 31 to 184 days before the remains were discovered and noted anomalies in the skull and teeth that were “suspicious for neglect or severe illness,” along with indications of “childhood nutrition stress.”7News4Jax. The Search That Led to Alabama
Family members told investigators Williams’ cellphone had “pinged” in rural Alabama. The FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team traced her phone data and showed she had made three separate trips to the state. On November 12, 2019, searchers discovered human remains in a wooded area of Marengo County, Alabama, on County Road 55 off Highway 28, about four miles outside Demopolis. Taylor’s body had been placed in a garbage bag inside a shallow grave.9People. At the site, investigators recovered plastic, fabric, three types of rope, blue gloves, a knife, cardboard, wire, papers, and a Punch drink can. Inside the apartment, detectives found children’s clothing and carpet stained with feces and noted the home showed no sign a child had been living there. Williams’ car smelled of decomposition and had been cleaned with chemicals. Possible bloodstains were documented in six locations inside the apartment, and a carpet stain triggered an alert from a cadaver dog.7News4Jax. Arrest, Charges, and Guilty Plea
On the same day the remains were found, Williams attempted suicide by overdose at Naval Air Station Jacksonville and was taken to UF Health hospital in serious condition. She was booked in absentia on two counts of child neglect and one count of giving false information to law enforcement.11News4Jax. On March 3, 2022, Williams pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Under the plea, she faced a sentence ranging from about 20.5 years to life.12NBC News. The Defense’s Account and Williams’ Statement
The sentencing hearing lasted three days and included more than 100 pieces of evidence.14Jacksonville.com. Williams’ defense attorney, Joshua Beard of the Public Defender’s Office, asked for the minimum 20.5 years.
The defense called Gainesville psychologist Ernest Bordini as its sole witness. He testified that Williams had schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety, and depression, and presented evidence of an extensive trauma history that included childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, and an eating disorder. Williams did not read her own statement, saying she was “scared” and “nervous.” A member of the Public Defender’s Office read it for her: “I know what I did was wrong. I failed as a mother, a protector and as a decent human being.” She added, “I accept full responsibility for everything. I voluntarily plead up to murder. I blame no one but myself.”2News4Jax. The Life Sentence
On September 20, 2022, Judge Kevin Blazs sentenced Williams to life in prison, with credit for 1,043 days already served. He said he had weighed her school and Navy records, clinical psychological reports, the autopsy findings suggesting malnutrition, and what he described as her “consciousness of guilt” in transporting and burying the body in Alabama. He acknowledged her “outstanding” Navy record and lack of prior criminal history but imposed the maximum sentence.14Jacksonville.com. By October 2022, Williams had been transferred from the Duval County jail to the women’s assessment center in Ocala, Florida, to begin serving her sentence in the Florida Department of Corrections.16News4Jax. Her Navy Background
Williams was 30 at the time of her sentencing. She enlisted in the Navy on November 20, 2012, trained as an Information Systems Technician, and was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6) in April 2019. She transferred to the Tactical Operations Center at NAS Jacksonville in April 2018, deployed overseas twice, and received nine awards in seven years of service, including the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.17Action News Jax.
