Broward County Parking Citation: Pay, Contest, and Consequences

A Broward County parking citation must be paid or contested within 10 business days of the date it was issued.¹ The Broward County Clerk of the Circuit and County Courts handles payments, records, and hearings for tickets issued by municipalities across the county.² Under Florida law, the vehicle’s registered owner is personally responsible for paying, unless they can prove someone else had control of the vehicle at the time.³ Ten business days is a shorter window than most people expect, and letting it lapse turns a routine fine into late fees, registration holds, and eventually collections.

Looking Up Your Citation

Two online systems will pull up a Broward parking ticket: the Clerk’s Online Fine Payment portal and PayIt at payitbrowardclerk.payitgov.com, which also offers a mobile app for searching cases, setting due-date reminders, and storing receipts.¹ You’ll need the citation number from the ticket, or your license plate number and state of registration. A brand-new citation may take a day or two to appear in the system after it’s issued.

Enter the plate exactly as it appears on your registration, including any spaces or special characters. A mistyped plate returns the wrong record or nothing at all, and the 10-business-day clock keeps running either way.

Paying the Ticket

The Clerk accepts payment through four channels:¹

Online through the Clerk’s Online Fine Payment service or the PayIt website and app. Processing and transaction fees apply.
By mail with a check or money order to Clerk of Courts Parking Division, P.O. Box 14610, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33302-4610. Write the citation number on the payment.
In person at any Broward County Clerk Parking/Code Enforcement service location, with cash, check, or money order.
At any Florida AMSCOT location with cash. A processing fee applies.

One trap catches people whose tickets have already gone unpaid: if your license plate renewal has been suspended because of outstanding parking citations, personal checks are no longer accepted.¹ You’ll need cash, a money order, or a card.

Payment Plans

If you can’t pay the full amount at once, the Clerk offers payment agreements, but only in person at a service location. No one can set one up on your behalf, and it isn’t available online. Bring a valid ID. There’s a $25 processing fee per case, and ongoing installments must be paid by mail or in person with cash, check, or money order.¹

Contesting the Citation

You have the right to contest a ticket you believe was issued in error, but the deadlines are tight and vary by the city that issued it. Before you file, understand the trade-off Florida law imposes: anyone who elects to appear before a hearing officer waives the right to simply pay the original civil penalty printed on the ticket, and the hearing officer independently decides both whether a violation occurred and what the penalty will be.³ The final amount can be higher than the ticket. Weigh your evidence before requesting a hearing.

Fort Lauderdale Tickets

Fort Lauderdale uses a two-tier appeal process. A Tier One Appeal must be filed within 10 calendar days of the citation date, online through the city’s parking portal. You enter the citation or plate information, explain in detail why the ticket was wrong, and attach any supporting documents.⁴

If Tier One is denied, you have 10 calendar days from that decision to request a Tier Two Appeal. The Tier Two form is submitted in person or by mail to Fort Lauderdale Parking Services at 290 N.E. 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. That office forwards the case to the Broward County Clerk of Courts, which assigns a county reference number and schedules a hearing. From that point on, all payments and communications go through the Clerk, and collection activity pauses until the hearing is resolved.⁴

Tickets from Other Broward Municipalities

Cities outside Fort Lauderdale generally require a written request for a hearing filed directly with the Broward County Clerk of Courts within 10 working days of the citation date. Some municipalities also let you contest by mail using a notarized statement and supporting evidence. The Clerk then sets a hearing within 60 calendar days and mails the hearing date with at least seven working days’ notice.⁵

Read the back of your ticket or the issuing city’s website for the exact form and filing address. Procedures aren’t identical across the county, and the one thing they share is that missing the deadline forfeits your right to contest.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay

Late fees begin as soon as the 10-business-day window closes, and the amount is set by the municipality that issued the citation. Weston, for example, adds a $12 late fee per violation.⁶ Other cities set their own amounts, so check your ticket or the issuing city’s code.

Beyond late fees, Florida law provides that anyone who fails to satisfy the court’s directive on a parking citation waives the right to pay the original civil penalty and is deemed convicted of the violation.³ From there, the court can take collection measures that stack more costs on top of the original fine.

Registration Holds

This penalty blindsides people. Florida law authorizes counties and municipalities to report drivers with three or more outstanding parking violations to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which then flags the owner’s vehicle registration and blocks renewal until every outstanding ticket is resolved.³ The threshold drops to a single outstanding violation if it involves a handicapped parking space or a similar local disability-parking ordinance.

Clearing the hold requires paying all accumulated fines, late fees, and collection costs in full. And once the suspension is in place, personal checks aren’t accepted.¹

Boots and the Barnacle

Some Broward municipalities go beyond registration holds and physically immobilize vehicles with outstanding parking debt. Hollywood uses both traditional wheel boots and a windshield-mounted device called the Barnacle. Removing either device requires paying all outstanding citations in full. If you pay the Barnacle removal fee through the QR code on the device, a $300 temporary hold is charged to your card and refunded within two to five business days once the device is returned.⁷

When the Debt Reaches a Collection Agency

If the ticket stays unpaid long enough, the Clerk can transfer the account to a private collection agency, and collection surcharges are added on top of the original fine. Federal law still applies. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the collector must send a validation notice so you can verify the debt is actually yours, and must investigate rather than continue pursuing payment if you dispute it.⁸

A parking ticket itself does not appear on your credit report, because the major credit bureaus no longer include that type of public record. Once a collection agency reports the debt, though, it can appear as a collection account and remain on your credit report for seven years from the original delinquency date. Some newer credit scoring models ignore collection accounts with a zero balance, so paying off the entry can limit the damage; older models that some lenders still use are less forgiving.

Accessible Parking Space Citations

Parking in a space designated for people with disabilities draws stiffer penalties, and as noted above, even one outstanding handicapped-parking violation can trigger a registration hold with the state.³

If you were ticketed and believe the space wasn’t properly marked, federal ADA standards set the baseline. Every accessible space must be at least 96 inches wide, with an adjacent access aisle at least 60 inches wide. The access aisle must be clearly marked, at the same level as the parking space, and connected to an accessible route leading to the building.⁹ Each space must also carry a sign bearing the international symbol of accessibility mounted at least 60 inches above the ground, and van-accessible spaces need a second sign identifying them as such. Parking facilities with four or fewer total spaces are exempt from the signage requirement.¹⁰ Missing or incorrect signage and markings can form the basis of an appeal, but you’ll need dated photos and documentation to make the argument stick.
