Bruce Beresford-Redman: Conviction, Prison, and Release

Bruce Beresford-Redman is a former American reality television producer, known for work on Survivor, Pimp My Ride, and The Restaurant, who was convicted in Mexico in 2015 of murdering his wife Mónica during a 2010 family vacation in Cancún. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, lost his appeal, and was released in June 2019 after serving roughly seven and a half years. He has always maintained his innocence.

Who He Is

Before the case, Beresford-Redman worked as a producer on several well-known reality series. He lived in the South Bay area of Los Angeles with his Brazilian-born wife, Mónica Burgos Beresford-Redman, and their two young children, Camila and Alec, who were about five and three years old in 2010. Mónica, 42, ran the Zabumba Bar & Restaurant on Venice Boulevard in the Palms neighborhood, a Brazilian spot known for live music.¹

What Happened in Cancún

In April 2010, the family flew to the Moon Palace Resort outside Cancún for a spring break trip that also marked Mónica’s 42nd birthday. Friends and relatives later said the couple had gone to Mexico to try to save a marriage in serious trouble.²

Around 6 a.m. on April 5, guests in the room below the couple reported hearing screams, cries for help, and loud banging. When a hotel concierge phoned, Bruce first told staff the noise came from an argument about the children, then later said it came from a game he was playing with his son.³ Mónica was reported missing later that day. She had left her cell phone, passport, and room key behind, and resort security had no record of her leaving the property.²

On April 8, her body was found in a sewage cistern on the resort grounds. An autopsy determined she died from asphyxia by suffocation and noted bruising on her face and a head wound.³ Investigators reported scratches on Bruce’s neck and said they found blood on a pillow and on a balcony railing in the couple’s hotel room.⁴

The Affair and the Marriage in Collapse

About a month before the trip, Bruce had emailed Mónica to confess an affair with Joy Pierce, a Hollywood casting director he had worked with. In one message entered into evidence he wrote, “Joy and I were lovers.”⁵ Mónica had already grown suspicious after finding gifts he had given Pierce, reading their text messages, and overhearing a call.⁶

The confession set off a fast collapse. Mónica cleaned out the couple’s joint account, telling Bruce to divide their assets in half or she would keep the money. She barred him from the children and told their schools he was not allowed to pick them up. In an email to Pierce, Bruce wrote, “She has denied me access to my children. … She has shut me out of my home, she has liquidated all my money.”⁷ Mónica briefly flew to Hawaii before the couple agreed to try the reconciliation trip to Cancún.⁵

Extradition documents cited years of broader marital problems, including allegations of mental abuse and $5,000 in phone-sex charges. The couple carried life insurance policies of $5 million on Bruce and $500,000 per child on Mónica, though reporting noted Bruce was not a direct beneficiary of those policies.⁶

Flight to the U.S. and Extradition

Mexican authorities had told him to stay in the country while the investigation continued. He didn’t. On May 24, 2010, he returned to his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, later saying he crossed the border on his driver’s license because he needed to be with his children.⁸⁴ Mexico issued an aggravated homicide warrant that same month.⁹

On November 16, 2010, U.S. Marshals and FBI agents arrested him at his California home at Mexico’s request.¹⁰⁹¹¹¹²

Trial and Conviction

The case was tried in Cancún before Judge Víctor Manuel Echeverria Tun.¹³ The prosecution’s case was largely circumstantial: the affair and the marital breakdown, the screams heard from the room, the blood inside the room, the scratches on Bruce’s body, the “do not disturb” sign left on the door all day, and Mónica’s belongings left behind.⁴

The defense pushed back hard. Attorney Jaime Cancino called the investigation “lousy” and biased from the outset. A court-appointed criminologist concluded Mónica had not been killed in the hotel room and found no physical evidence tying Bruce to the crime. DNA testing showed the small blood droplets in the room did not match Mónica. Much of the collected evidence was damaged by mold and water while in police custody, and the defense said some items had been lost or destroyed before it could examine them. The defense also pointed to another possible suspect: a hotel worker fired for allegedly trying to assault a different guest at the same resort around the same time.⁴¹⁴

Bruce offered his own explanations. He said the scratches on his hands came from climbing a rocky slope after a boat ride, and the marks on his neck from a rough nylon rope used while diving. He said the “do not disturb” sign was up because he and the children were napping. He also had Mónica cremated, a decision her sister Jeane Burgos alleged was an attempt to destroy evidence.⁴

On March 12, 2015, Judge Echeverria Tun found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to 12 years.¹³

The Appeal

Beresford-Redman appealed, with Cancino arguing there was “no evidence to support the verdict” and that the trial was “plagued by irregularities.”¹⁵ In January 2016, a Mexican state court denied the appeal and upheld the 12-year sentence.¹⁶ Cancino said he planned to take the case to Mexico’s supreme court and, if needed, to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.¹⁷

His parents publicly criticized the outcome, saying the case “should lead to a reconsideration of the extradition treaty between the United States and Mexico as it is clear that Mexico cannot meet even minimal standards of justice.”¹¹

Prison

Beresford-Redman was held at the Benito Juárez Prison in Cancún, known as Cereso. The facility was built for 700 inmates but held more than 1,800. He said his cell, meant for three, sometimes held 10 to 17 men. Running water was on only a few hours a day, open sewers ran through the buildings, and riots and tear-gassing were common.¹⁸

He arrived with no money and no supplies. He described eating food placed directly onto his outstretched fingers and sleeping on the floor alongside scorpions and spiders, and said inmates in his early wing threatened him with sexual violence. Other prisoners nicknamed him “Survivor Man,” believing he had been a contestant on the show rather than a producer of it.¹⁹ His parents dipped into retirement savings to send money for food and basic supplies. He kept his children from visiting, saying he didn’t want them to see the conditions.¹⁸

Release in 2019

On June 20, 2019, he was released after serving roughly seven and a half years of the 12-year sentence.²⁰ Under Mexican law, inmates can be released after completing 60 percent of a sentence. His total time behind bars included the year he spent in a Los Angeles jail awaiting extradition. He received good-behavior credit and paid $2,000 in restitution.²¹

The Children

Custody of Camila and Alec became its own long fight. In April 2010, weeks after Mónica’s death, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff granted temporary guardianship to Bruce’s parents, David and Juanita Beresford-Redman. Mónica’s sisters, Carla Van Bastelaar and Jeane Burgos, challenged the arrangement, noting the grandparents’ ages (77 and 73) and Juanita’s lupus diagnosis.²²

In November 2010, the parties settled. The children would live with their father’s parents in Rancho Palos Verdes, who received permanent guardianship, and the maternal aunts kept supervised visitation. The deal required Bruce to wait a year before petitioning to restore his parental rights, and the aunts reserved the right to challenge any such petition regardless of how the criminal case turned out.²³

Where He Is Now

After his release, Beresford-Redman returned to Southern California. As of September 2019, he was living in Gardena with his mother and his two children.²⁴ He continues to insist he was wrongly convicted: “I am accused of the murder of my wife Monica, a crime I did not commit.”²⁵
