Bryan Kohberger Murders: Plea Deal, Sentencing, and Where He Is Now

The Bryan Kohberger murders ended with a guilty plea and four consecutive life sentences without parole. Kohberger, a 28-year-old criminology Ph.D. student, stabbed four University of Idaho students to death in their off-campus rental house in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022. He pleaded guilty on July 2, 2025, to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary, and was sentenced on July 23, 2025, to four consecutive life terms plus ten years for the burglary and $270,000 in fines and civil penalties.¹ Prosecutors never established a motive.²

Who Was Killed

Four University of Idaho students died in the attack. Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen, both 21, were lifelong best friends who had been inseparable since sixth grade and lived in the house. Xana Kernodle, 20, also lived there. Ethan Chapin, 20, was Kernodle’s boyfriend and a Sigma Chi member; he was staying over that night.³

Autopsy reports by Spokane County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Veena Singh, later unsealed, found that all four died from multiple sharp-force injuries consistent with a Ka-Bar Marine Corps fighting knife. Dr. Singh concluded that all four “endured a high degree of pain and/or suffering” before death, with Chapin suffering “to a lesser degree than the other decedents.”⁴ Three of the four were attacked in bed. Kernodle was awake and fought back, sustaining defensive wounds on her hands and arms.⁵ Goncalves had the most extensive injuries: over 24 stab wounds to the face, neck, and scalp, blunt-force injuries that fractured her nose and knocked out a tooth, and evidence that an unidentified object had been placed across her mouth.⁶

What Happened That Night

On the evening of November 12, Goncalves and Mogen went out in Moscow. Chapin attended a formal event with his sister before joining Kernodle at the King Road house. Investigators say Kohberger entered through a kitchen sliding door at roughly 4:00 a.m. on November 13. He went to the third floor first and killed Mogen and Goncalves. Moving to the second floor, he encountered Kernodle, who was awake, and killed her before stabbing Chapin, who was asleep in Kernodle’s room.³

Two other roommates, Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, were in the house and survived. Mortensen later told investigators she heard noises upstairs and what she believed was Goncalves saying “there’s someone here.” She heard crying from Kernodle’s room and a male voice saying “It’s ok, I’m going to help you.” When she opened her door, she saw a figure in black clothing and a mask walking past her toward the sliding glass door. She described him as having a lean build and a “bushy eyebrow.” The two roommates exchanged panicked text messages but did not call 911 until 11:58 a.m., roughly eight hours later.⁷

How Investigators Identified Kohberger

A Ka-Bar knife sheath was recovered next to Madison Mogen’s body. DNA taken from the snap of the sheath produced no match in the FBI’s criminal database, so investigators turned to genetic genealogy. The DNA lab Othram received the sample around Thanksgiving 2022 and generated a genetic profile within 48 hours, pointing to a multigenerational Pennsylvania family with Italian ancestry.⁸ Analysts built a family tree from cousin matches in a public ancestry database and identified the Kohberger family.⁹

Agents then retrieved trash from the Kohberger family home in Pennsylvania. DNA from those items indicated that Bryan Kohberger’s father was likely the father of the person who left DNA on the sheath. Lead prosecutor Bill Thompson later called the trash pull the “CSI moment” that let investigators secure warrants.¹⁰

Two other evidence streams pointed the same direction. Security cameras captured a white Hyundai Elantra near the victims’ home at 3:29 a.m. on November 13, passing the area multiple times before speeding away around 4:20 a.m. Campus cameras at Washington State University showed a matching vehicle leaving Pullman shortly before 3:00 a.m. and returning just before 5:30 a.m. Cell records showed Kohberger’s phone near the King Road neighborhood at least 12 times in the months before the murders, beginning in August 2022. On the night of the killings, his phone stopped transmitting location data between roughly 2:47 a.m. and 4:48 a.m., consistent with the phone being powered off during the attack.¹¹ A separate search warrant showed Kohberger had purchased a Ka-Bar knife, sheath, and sharpening equipment through his Amazon account months before the murders.¹²

On December 30, 2022, Kohberger was arrested at his parents’ home in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, by the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team, working with the Moscow Police Department, Idaho State Police, and the FBI.¹³ He waived extradition on January 3, 2023, and was transported to Idaho and held without bail.¹⁴

Who Bryan Kohberger Is

Kohberger had just finished his first semester as a Ph.D. student in criminal justice and criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, about ten miles from Moscow. He also worked as a teaching assistant.¹⁵ He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at DeSales University in Pennsylvania, where his graduate coursework included study under Katherine Ramsland, an expert on serial killers.¹⁶

While at DeSales, Kohberger ran a Reddit research survey under his own name asking people who had committed crimes to describe their “most recent criminal offense” and their “thoughts and feelings throughout your experience.” Questions included “Did you struggle with or fight the victim?” and “Why did you choose that victim or target over others?” The survey had been approved by the DeSales Institutional Review Board and was taken offline after his arrest.¹⁷

Kohberger wrote as a teenager about experiencing depression and later developed a heroin addiction.¹⁶ At 19 he was arrested for stealing an iPhone from his sister; that case was expunged under a first-time offender program.¹⁸

The Plea Deal

A grand jury indicted Kohberger on May 16, 2023, on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. At arraignment he stood silent, and the judge entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.¹⁴ Prosecutors announced in June 2023 that they would seek the death penalty, which in Idaho can be carried out by firing squad.¹⁹

On June 30, 2025, weeks before trial, Kohberger signed a plea agreement to plead guilty to all five counts in exchange for four consecutive fixed life sentences without parole and a ten-year fixed sentence for burglary, all running consecutively. The death penalty was dropped. Kohberger also waived his right to appeal and to seek leniency.²⁰

According to reporting by the Idaho Statesman, the defense initiated the request for a plea offer. Prosecutors consulted with some of the victims’ families before agreeing. Factors cited included the risk of a hung jury, the cost of a death penalty trial (the case had already exceeded $3.6 million by April 2024), a desire to spare the families a lengthy trial, and the recognition that death penalty appeals could stretch on for decades.²¹

The families split. The Chapin family expressed support, and Ben Mogen, Madison’s father, said the deal allowed his family to “put this behind us,” adding that he believed life in prison served justice better than a “quick death sentence.”²² The Goncalves and Kernodle families were strongly opposed. Steve Goncalves said publicly that “Idaho has failed” his family and that the deal was “the opposite of what we wanted.” The Goncalves family asked prosecutors to amend the agreement to require a full confession and disclosure of the murder weapon’s location; prosecutors declined, saying the agreement could not ethically be changed after the defendant had accepted it.²³

The Guilty Plea and Sentencing

On July 2, 2025, Kohberger appeared before District Judge Steven Hippler for a change of plea hearing. When the judge asked, “Are you pleading guilty because you are guilty?” Kohberger replied, “Yes.” He confirmed under oath that he had acted willfully, unlawfully, deliberately, and with premeditation and malice aforethought.²⁴ The plea deal did not require a factual allocution. Prosecutor Thompson later explained: “I don’t believe that there is anything that would come out of his mouth that would be the truth.”²⁵

The sentencing hearing took place three weeks later, on July 23, 2025, at the Ada County Courthouse. Alivea Goncalves, Kaylee’s sister, called Kohberger a “delusional, pathetic, hypochondriac loser” and said that had her sister not been asleep, “Kaylee would’ve kicked your f—— ass.” Steve Goncalves told Kohberger he was “foolish and stupid” for leaving DNA at the scene. Randy Davis, Xana Kernodle’s stepfather, told him directly: “You’re gonna go to hell.” Kim Kernodle, Xana’s aunt, offered a different message, saying she had forgiven Kohberger because she “could no longer live with that hate.”²⁶

Dylan Mortensen, appearing publicly for the first time since the murders, described “debilitating, tsunami-like panic attacks” and called Kohberger “a hollow vessel, something less than human.” Bethany Funke, in a statement read by a friend, described being “sick with guilt” over surviving and said she had slept in her parents’ room for nearly a year afterward. The Chapin family chose not to attend.²⁶

Kohberger declined to speak.²⁵ Judge Hippler called the murders an “unfathomable and senseless act of evil” that caused “immeasurable pain and loss.” He remarked: “Even if I could force him to speak, which legally I cannot, how could anyone ever be assured that what he speaks is the truth?” He then imposed four consecutive life sentences without parole plus ten years for the burglary.²⁷

Was a Motive Ever Established

No. At the plea hearing, Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson said that after nearly three years of investigation, his office had been unable to determine a motive. Thompson also stated explicitly: “There is no evidence there was any sexual component or sexual assault on any of the victims.” Steve Goncalves has publicly disputed that characterization, claiming that individuals involved in the investigation told him evidence from Kohberger’s phone indicated the crimes were “sexually motivated” and that Kohberger had searched for content involving “drunk passed out girls and gagging girls.” Those claims have not been confirmed by prosecutors or the court.²

Thompson, reflecting on the case, called Kohberger an “enigma” and said “the evil that he committed is incomprehensible.” He defended the decision to accept a plea without a confession, saying he had “no faith” that Kohberger would provide a truthful account and feared any forced statement would “further victimize the families.”¹⁰

Where Kohberger Is Now

Kohberger is housed at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna, about nine miles south of Boise. As of the most recent available records, he is assigned to J Block, the facility’s long-term restrictive housing unit, where inmates are held in single-person cells, moved in restraints, given one hour of daily outdoor recreation, and served meals in their cells.²⁸ The Idaho Department of Correction describes the assignment as designed “to manage specific behaviors” rather than as a disciplinary sanction. The facility is the state’s only maximum-security prison, with a capacity of 535 inmates, and also houses death row.²⁹ His sentence satisfaction date is listed as “Life.”³⁰
