Office Hours

A closed office does not automatically excuse a missed check-in unless your officer confirms it, so call ahead during winter storms or hurricane season rather than guessing.

What to Bring to Your First Check-In

Your intake appointment sets the tone for the rest of your supervision. Come prepared with:

Your court judgment paperwork, typically an AOC-CR-603 or AOC-CR-604 form, which lays out your conditions, any community service hours, and any restitution amounts.
A government-issued photo ID such as a North Carolina driver’s license or state ID card. If yours is expired or was surrendered, bring what you have and discuss options with your officer.
Proof of your current Cabarrus County address, like a recent utility bill, lease, or piece of official mail.
Employment or school documentation, such as pay stubs, an employer letter, or enrollment records.

Firearms in the Home

One condition surprises people at intake: North Carolina probation prohibits possessing any firearm, ammunition, or explosive device as a regular condition of every supervised probation term.³ It applies automatically. Fees You Should Expect

Probation in North Carolina is not free. The court will order a $40 monthly supervision fee unless you successfully petition for a waiver based on financial hardship. If your conditions include drug testing, each screening administered by the Division of Community Supervision costs $20, and the court can reduce or waive that fee only if it finds you are unable to pay.³ Depending on how often you are tested, those charges add up. Budget for them alongside any restitution, court costs, and fines from your sentencing order.

How Reporting Works

Your officer sets a reporting schedule based on your supervision level. State law requires you to report at reasonable times and places as directed, allow your officer to visit you, answer their questions truthfully, and get prior approval before changing your address or job.³

When you call the office, give the receptionist your full legal name and your officer’s name up front. If the officer is unavailable, leave a voicemail with your name, the reason for your call, and a callback number. A phone call does not replace an in-person appointment unless your officer specifically says so.

For in-person visits, sign in at the front desk and wait to be called back. Your officer will review your progress, verify employment, and go over upcoming deadlines for community service or restitution. Before you leave, you will usually get a written slip with your next reporting date. Keep it. It is both your proof of attendance and your reminder for the next appointment.

Standard Conditions Worth Knowing Before Intake

Every supervised probation term in North Carolina carries a set of regular conditions that apply automatically:

Commit no new criminal offense in any jurisdiction.³
Remain within the court’s jurisdiction unless the court or your officer gives written permission to leave.
Make a good-faith effort to pay court costs, fines, and restitution as directed.
Do not use, possess, or control any controlled substance unless it is prescribed by a licensed physician and taken as directed.
Submit to warrantless searches of your person, vehicle, and home by a probation officer for supervision purposes.

The court can also add special conditions built around your case: substance abuse treatment, drug and alcohol testing, curfews, house arrest, association restrictions, and community service hours.³ Read your judgment paperwork closely so you know what actually applies to you, and ask your officer at intake about anything that is not clear.

What Happens If You Miss an Appointment

A single missed appointment does not automatically produce an arrest warrant. Officers follow an administrative policy that scales the response to your risk level and the type of violation. One missed check-in for a low-risk person may draw a reprimand or an added appointment. A pattern raises the stakes fast.

Officers do have authority to arrest when they have reasonable suspicion that you violated a condition. If a violation hearing is scheduled and you skip it, the court can issue an order for arrest. Absconding, meaning deliberately avoiding supervision or hiding your whereabouts, is one of only two categories of violations (the other being a new criminal offense) that can lead directly to full revocation of your probation and activation of your suspended sentence. For most other violations, the court uses a graduated response with up to 90 days of confinement before revocation becomes available.⁴

If you miss an appointment, call your officer the same day if you can. Explain what happened and ask how to get back on track. Showing up voluntarily is always better than being picked up on a warrant.

Moving Out of State

Leaving North Carolina without permission violates a regular condition of probation.³ If you have a legitimate reason to relocate, you can request an interstate transfer through the Interstate Compact for Adult Offender Supervision, which North Carolina participates in.⁵

The process starts with your probation officer, not with you moving first and sorting the paperwork later. The receiving state can accept or deny the transfer and can attach its own conditions once you arrive. North Carolina remains the sending state until the transfer is complete.
