To work as a Certified Nursing Assistant in California, you must complete a 160-hour state-approved training program, pass a two-part competency exam, and clear a criminal background check through Live Scan fingerprinting. California CNA certification requirements are set by the Department of Public Health (CDPH), and the certificate lasts two years before you have to renew it with continuing education and proof of recent paid work. The 160-hour training floor is more than double the 75-hour federal minimum, so the road in takes longer here than in most other states.
Training Program Hours and Content
Every candidate has to finish a CDPH-approved Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP) before sitting for the exam. The minimum is 60 hours of classroom theory and 100 hours of supervised clinical training, for 160 hours total.1California Department of Public Health. The clinical hours have to happen in a real nursing facility under the direct supervision of the program’s instructor or director of staff development. No instructor can supervise more than 15 students at a time in clinical, and clinical training can only run between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.3Legal Information Institute. Programs run through community colleges, adult education centers, vocational schools, and some skilled nursing facilities. Community college programs tend to be the least expensive route.
The Competency Evaluation Exam
Once you finish training and the CDPH approves you to test, you take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam. It has two parts: a knowledge test, which you can take written or orally, and a hands-on skills evaluation.4eCFR. 42 CFR 483.154 – Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation You have to pass both.
As of March 1, 2026, the knowledge test costs $40 ($45 for the audio version) and the skills evaluation costs $100.5D&S Diversified Technologies. California Nurse Aide You register through regional testing centers within the California Community College system, and you need your CDPH approval letter to do it.
You get two years from the date you finish your training program to pass both parts, with a maximum of three attempts in that window. If you pass one part and fail the other, you only retake the failed part. Miss the two-year window or the third attempt, and you have to complete a new training program before you can test again.
Criminal Background Clearance
You have to obtain a criminal record clearance through California’s Live Scan fingerprinting system. Fingerprints are captured at any Live Scan location and sent electronically to the Department of Justice; the CDPH publishes the specific Live Scan form CNA applicants must use. If you’re outside California, you can mail in two FD-258 fingerprint cards with a $32 check or money order payable to the Department of Justice.6California Department of Public Health. This isn’t a one-time step. State law requires CNAs to maintain criminal record clearance at certification and every two years afterward.7California Legislative Information. California Health and Safety Code HSC 1337 A conviction or pending criminal matter can delay certification or block it altogether.
Renewing Your Certificate Every Two Years
California CNA certificates last two years. To renew, you have to meet a continuing education requirement and a paid-work requirement before your expiration date.
Continuing Education Hours
You need 48 hours of in-service training or continuing education units during each two-year cycle. At least 12 hours must fall in the first year and at least 12 in the second, so you can’t cram them all in at the end. No more than 24 of the 48 hours can come from CDPH-approved online training; the rest have to be in person.8California Department of Public Health. Paid Work Requirement
You also have to show that you provided compensated nursing or nursing-related services for at least eight consecutive hours during the 24 months before your expiration date. The work has to have been supervised by a licensed health professional, such as a registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse. A pay stub or W-2 covering that employment usually satisfies the requirement.
What Happens if Your Certificate Lapses
Missing your renewal deadline doesn’t permanently end your CNA career, but the way back depends on how long you’ve been expired.
If your certificate has been expired less than two years, you can reactivate it by passing the competency exam again. You file a renewal application (CDPH 283C) and mark “yes” in the reactivation section. Once approved, CDPH sends an approval letter with instructions to schedule the exam, which you have to take within two years of the expiration date.10California Department of Public Health. If it’s been expired more than two years, you start over. That means a whole new CDPH-approved training program, a new initial application (CDPH 283B), fresh Live Scan fingerprinting, and passing the competency exam again.10California Department of Public Health. CNA FAQ – Renewal Plan for at least 60 days after passing the exam for the testing vendor to send results and for CDPH to issue the new certificate. The two-year cutoff is the deadline in this process where waiting costs you real money and months of time.
Transferring a CNA Certificate From Another State
If you already hold an active CNA certificate elsewhere, you can move it to California through reciprocity without redoing training or the exam. There is no federal multi-state CNA license, so a separate California application is required.
You’ll need:
- The CDPH 283E Certified Nurse Assistant Equivalency/Reciprocity Application.
- Proof of current certification: a copy of your out-of-state certificate or a screenshot of active status on that state’s online registry. If the state has no online registry, submit a CDPH 931 verification form completed by the endorsing state.
- Live Scan fingerprinting in California, or two mailed FD-258 fingerprint cards with a $32 fee if you’re out of state.
- Proof of recent work: a pay stub or W-2 showing supervised nursing-related services within the past two years. If your out-of-state certificate was issued within the last two years, you can skip this. Staffing agency work doesn’t count unless the facility itself provides a letter confirming supervised work.

How You Can Lose Your Certificate
CDPH investigates complaints of abuse, neglect, theft from residents, and other misconduct. If a complaint is substantiated, the department can place the CNA on probation, suspend the certificate for up to 24 months, or revoke it.11California Department of Public Health. How to Report Misconduct or Abuse Before any action takes effect, the department must send written notice by certified mail at least 20 business days in advance, with copies of the supporting evidence. A CNA can request an informal hearing within 15 business days or go straight to a formal administrative hearing by notifying CDPH in writing within 20 calendar days.12Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations Title 22 71851 – Disciplinary Actions and Appeals A CNA who has been convicted of a crime is not eligible for the informal hearing.
A substantiated finding of abuse, neglect, or theft from a resident is entered on the federal nurse aide registry. Once that finding is on the registry, the CNA is permanently barred from working at any facility that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding.11California Department of Public Health. Checking a Certificate Online
Anyone can look up a California CNA certificate through the CDPH Licensing and Certification Verification tool. Choose “Certified Nurse Assistant” from the certificate type menu and search by certificate number for the cleanest result; last and first name also works.13California Department of Public Health. L & C Verification Search Page Since March 2023, the tool only displays active, denied, suspended, and revoked statuses, so a certificate that has simply expired without any adverse action won’t show up.
