California crab trap regulations require a resident or non-resident sport fishing license plus a Recreational Crab Trap Validation, limit trap use to ocean waters north of Point Arguello, and set specific rules for trap construction, buoy marking, servicing intervals, size, and daily catch. Enforcement is handled by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), and the rules can shift mid-season when whale entanglement risk or domoic acid contamination triggers closures.
Licenses and Validations You Need First
Anyone 16 or older must hold a valid California Sport Fishing License. For 2026, that costs $64.54 for residents and $174.14 for non-residents. If you’re using rigid crab traps, you also need a Recreational Crab Trap Validation for $2.98.1State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Sport Fishing Licenses and Report Cards The validation is specific to rigid traps. If you fish only with hoop nets or crab snares, the base fishing license is enough.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Crab and CPFV Validation
When CDFW registers your gear, it assigns you a GO ID number. That number goes on your buoy, so keep it handy.
Where Crab Traps Are Legal
Recreational crab traps may only be used in ocean waters north of Point Arguello in Santa Barbara County.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Trap Regulations 2025-26 South of that line, traps aren’t an option. Hoop nets, crab snares, and hand collection stay legal there.
Even inside the allowed zone, CDFW can temporarily prohibit traps when whale or turtle entanglement risk rises. The agency has to give at least five days’ notice before a restriction takes effect. When traps are shut down, you can still crab by hand, hoop net, or snare.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Trap Regulations 2025-26 This happened during the 2025–2026 season in parts of the coast. Treat trap access as conditional, not guaranteed.
Marine protected areas are their own boundary. Taking or possessing any living marine resource inside a state marine reserve is illegal without a scientific collecting permit, and some state marine conservation areas allow only limited take by species.4Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute. Season Dates
Dungeness
Recreational Dungeness season opens November 1. The close date depends on where you fish:5State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Current California Ocean Recreational Fishing Regulations – San Francisco
- North of the Sonoma/Mendocino county line: through July 30.
- South of the Sonoma/Mendocino county line: through June 30.
Those are the default dates. Openings are frequently delayed for domoic acid contamination or entanglement risk. For 2025–2026, northern California’s opening was pushed back after testing revealed unsafe domoic acid levels, and some areas didn’t open until late December 2025.6State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Fishery to Open in Last Closed Area of Humboldt County After Delay Due to Public Health Risks Domoic acid has no taste or smell, and cooking doesn’t destroy it. When zones do open, the California Department of Public Health may still advise against eating crab viscera and recommend cleaning crab before cooking.
Rock Crab
Rock crab is open year-round with no regional closures.7Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.85 – Crabs That makes it the fallback when Dungeness is delayed or closed.
Size and Bag Limits
Dungeness must measure at least 5¾ inches across the carapace, taken as the shortest straight-line distance from shell edge to shell edge directly in front of the lateral spines. The daily bag and possession limit is 10.7Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.85 – Crabs
Rock crab must measure at least 4 inches across the widest part of the shell. The daily bag and possession limit is 35.7Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.85 – Crabs
Carry a crab gauge. Wardens check sizes routinely, and one undersized crab in the cooler can produce a citation.
How Many Traps and How They Must Be Built
You may fish up to 10 crab traps at a time. You can service an additional 10 traps belonging to another operator if they’ve given you written permission.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Trap Regulations 2025-26
Escape Rings
Every trap must have at least two rigid circular escape openings with an inside diameter of at least 4¼ inches. The bottom edge of each opening must sit within five inches of the top of the trap.8Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.80 – Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans The rings let undersized crabs escape while the trap soaks. A trap with damaged, clogged, or undersized rings is illegal even if everything else is in order.
Destruct Device
Each trap needs a destruct device so a lost or abandoned trap doesn’t keep catching crabs indefinitely. The device must be made from a single strand of untreated cotton twine, size No. 120 or smaller. When the twine degrades in saltwater, it must open an unobstructed escape hole of at least five inches in the top or upper half of the trap. Using any material that blocks or interferes with the destruct device is illegal.9Cornell Law School. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 180.2 – Trap Destruction Devices
Servicing Interval
Every trap must be raised, cleaned, and emptied at intervals no longer than nine days, weather permitting.10New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans If weather prevents servicing, document the conditions. Leaving traps unserviced past nine days without cause risks a citation and needless crab mortality.
Buoy Marking
Each trap must carry exactly two buoys:8Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.80 – Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans
- A main surface buoy at least 5 inches in diameter and 11 inches long, legibly marked with your CDFW-assigned GO ID number.
- A red marker buoy at least 3 inches in diameter and 5 inches long, attached no more than 3 feet from the main buoy.
If your markings aren’t legible or the GO ID is missing, enforcement officers can pull the trap.
If Traps Get Restricted: Hoop Nets
Hoop nets are the practical fallback when CDFW restricts trap use. They don’t require the Crab Trap Validation, only the base fishing license.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Crab and CPFV Validation The tradeoff is a much shorter check interval: hoop nets must be raised and inspected every two hours.10New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans
Penalties
Most recreational crabbing violations — fishing without a license, keeping undersized crabs, exceeding bag limits, using improperly constructed traps — are misdemeanors under the Fish and Game Code. The standard penalty is a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in county jail. Certain violations carry enhanced penalties of up to $2,000 and one year in jail.11California Legislative Information. California Fish and Game Code 12002 Wardens can also confiscate illegal gear and any illegally caught crab.
