California guard card renewal costs $44 as of October 1, 2025, and the application must reach the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services at least 60 days before your current registration expires.1Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Security Guard Registration Renewal Application You can file online through the state’s BreEZe portal or by mail. Miss that pre-expiration deadline and a 60-day grace period lets you renew for $69. Miss the grace period and the registration is canceled outright, with no way back except a new initial application, new fingerprinting, and the full initial training all over again.
Renewal Window and Deadlines
BSIS accepts renewal applications between 120 days and 60 days before your registration expires. File earlier than 120 days out and the bureau returns the application unprocessed. The 60-day mark is a legal deadline, not a courtesy target.1Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Security Guard Registration Renewal Application
If your registration expires before you file, you get 60 more days to submit a delinquent renewal with an added $25 fee. After that, the registration is canceled entirely. Cancellation resets you to first-time-applicant status: new application, new Live Scan fingerprints, new DOJ and FBI background checks, and the full initial training requirements.
Renewal Fees
The biennial renewal fee rose to $44 effective October 1, 2025, up from $40. Renewing during the 60-day delinquent window costs $69: the standard $44 plus a $25 delinquency penalty.2Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Apply Now – Security Guard Registration
Online payments through BreEZe are credit card only: American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa.3State of California. DCA BreEZe Online Services Mail submissions need a check or money order made out to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. No renewal requires new Live Scan fingerprinting; those fees apply only to initial applications.
Training You Must Complete Before Renewing
Two training requirements must be finished before BSIS will process a renewal. The first is the original 32 hours of security guard skills training required within six months of your initial registration: 16 hours within the first 30 days and 16 more within six months.4California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 7583.6 – Security Guard Skills Training If any of those initial hours were skipped, your renewal will not go through.
The second is eight hours of continuing education for each year of your two-year registration, for 16 hours total across the cycle.4California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 7583.6 – Security Guard Skills Training The annual hours cover officer skills including the power to arrest, use of force, and other topics set by the bureau. Training must come from a BSIS-approved provider. Keep your certificates: the renewal application requires you to certify under penalty of perjury that all required training is complete.1Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Filing the Application
The form itself is straightforward. You provide your full legal name, guard registration number, expiration date, date of birth, and current addresses.1Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Security Guard Registration Renewal Application If your mailing address differs from where you live, list both. Confirm your name matches BSIS records exactly; typos and unrecorded name changes are a common source of processing delays. The training certification appears on the same form, where you confirm under penalty of perjury that both the initial 32 hours and the annual continuing education are done.5California Legislative Information. The fastest way to submit is the BreEZe online portal, which handles the application and credit card payment in one session.3State of California. DCA BreEZe Online Services Mail filers send the completed PDF form and payment to the BSIS address printed on the renewal form.
BSIS quotes four to six weeks for processing, though workload can push that longer.6Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Online submissions tend to move faster than mailed ones, but neither route comes with a guaranteed turnaround.
Working While Your Renewal Processes
California law requires every guard to carry a valid registration card while on duty.7California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 7583.3 – Security Guard Requirements The statute also addresses the gap between BSIS approval and the physical card arriving. Once the bureau has approved your renewal and the license verification tool shows your status as active, you can keep working, provided you carry two items: a hardcopy printout of the approval from the BSIS website and a valid photo ID.8California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 7583.17 – Security Guard Registration Card
A phone screenshot does not satisfy the rule. The statute specifically says “hardcopy printout.” If the database still shows expired or pending, you cannot legally work until it flips to active.6Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Security Guard Registration
If Your Registration Lapses
Within 60 days after expiration, renewal is still possible at $69. You cannot legally work during that window unless and until BSIS processes the renewal and your status reads active online.1Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Security Guard Registration Renewal Application
Past 60 days, renewal is off the table. You file a fresh initial application, book a new Live Scan appointment, pay new DOJ and FBI background processing fees, and wait the same four-to-six-week window a first-time applicant waits. Years of guard experience do not shorten it.
Firearms Permit Renewal Is Separate
Renewing your guard card does not renew a BSIS firearms permit. The firearms permit has its own application, its own fee, and its own training, including four range qualifications, associated use-of-force training, and a written exam requiring 85 percent to pass.9Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Firearms Permit Fact Sheet The firearms renewal must also reach BSIS at least 60 days before the permit expires.
The firearms permit has no grace period. If it expires, it cannot be renewed at all: you file for a new initial firearms permit and repeat the initial training.10Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Firearms Permit Renewal Application Because a firearms permit must be tied to a valid guard registration, letting the guard card lapse can take the armed status down with it.11California Legislative Information.
