CalFresh is California’s version of SNAP, and eligibility comes down to three things: California residency, household size, and income under 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. If you qualify, monthly benefits range from up to $298 for a single person to $994 for a family of four in the current federal fiscal year, loaded onto an EBT card you can use at most grocery stores and farmers’ markets. Most households receive less than the maximum because the calculation adjusts for what you earn.
Who Counts as Your Household
Household size shapes both the income limits and the benefit amount, so this is where the analysis starts. Your CalFresh household is the people who live with you and normally share meals. Spouses living together are always in the same household. Legal permanent residents who don’t yet meet federal eligibility rules may still get the same benefits through the California Food Assistance Program (CFAP), which uses state funds to fill that gap.3California Department of Social Services. One important boundary: households where every member receives Supplemental Security Income are generally not eligible for CalFresh, because SSI payments already include a food component.
The Income Limits
Most CalFresh households have to clear two income tests. Gross monthly income, before any deductions, cannot exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty Level for your household size. California has effectively eliminated the asset test for most applicants under broad-based categorical eligibility. Savings accounts, vehicles, and personal property don’t disqualify you.5Food and Nutrition Service. Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility A resource limit may still apply if a household member has been disqualified for a program violation, or in certain households with a senior or disabled member whose income exceeds the standard thresholds.
Maximum Monthly Benefits

These are ceilings. The actual benefit depends on your income. Households with two or more members age 60 and over, or with a disability, are guaranteed a minimum of $60 per month regardless of income.7San Francisco Human Services Agency. Check CalFresh Eligibility
How the County Calculates Your Actual Benefit
Your county worker starts with your gross monthly income and subtracts a set of deductions to reach net income. The deductions are worth knowing because they can push your benefit up substantially:
- Standard deduction: $209 for households of one to three, $223 for four, $261 for five, and $299 for six or more.
- Earned income deduction: 20% of any wages, salary, or self-employment income.
- Dependent care: out-of-pocket costs for child care or care of a disabled household member that let someone work or train.
- Shelter costs: rent or mortgage, property taxes, insurance, and utilities that exceed half of your income after other deductions. The shelter deduction is capped at $744 per month unless someone in the household is 60 or older or has a disability, in which case the cap doesn’t apply.
- Medical expenses: available only to elderly or disabled household members, for out-of-pocket costs above $35 per month. California also offers a flat $150 standard medical deduction when verified expenses fall between $35.01 and $185, which cuts down on paperwork.8California Department of Social Services. For utilities, California uses a Standard Utility Allowance of $663 per month, so you don’t have to document individual bills. Once net income is set, the county multiplies it by 30% and subtracts that figure from the maximum allotment for your household size. Whatever remains is your monthly benefit. If the math produces $0 or less, you don’t qualify.
What CalFresh Pays For
CalFresh covers most food and drink at stores that accept EBT: fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, bread, cereals, snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages, and even seeds or plants that produce food for your household.10USDA Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy?
What it doesn’t cover: alcohol, tobacco, cannabis or CBD products, vitamins or supplements (anything with a “Supplement Facts” label), hot foods at the point of sale, pet food, cleaning supplies, and personal care items. The hot-food rule catches people at delis and convenience stores. A cold rotisserie chicken you’ll reheat at home is eligible; the same chicken sold warm off the rotisserie is not.
How to Apply
The fastest route is BenefitsCal, California’s online benefits portal. GetCalFresh.org no longer accepts applications and now redirects there.11GetCalFresh. Before you start, pull together proof of identity for each household member, Social Security numbers, proof of California residency such as a utility bill or lease, pay stubs from the last 30 days, any benefit award letters, and records of shelter costs.13California Department of Social Services. Those receipts can meaningfully raise your benefit.
A county eligibility worker will schedule a phone interview after your application arrives. Processing takes up to 30 days. Households with very low income and few resources may qualify for expedited processing, which puts benefits on your card within three calendar days.
Work Requirements Starting June 2026
Beginning June 1, 2026, California is applying stricter federal work rules for CalFresh recipients classified as Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents. If you’re between 18 and 64, physically and mentally able to work at least 20 hours per week, and don’t have a dependent child under 14, the rule applies to you.14California Department of Social Services. You’ll need to work or take part in a qualifying activity for at least 80 hours per month. Paid employment, self-employment, volunteering, and participation in the CalFresh Employment and Training (CFET) program all count.15USDA Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements If you don’t meet the requirement and aren’t exempt, you can only receive CalFresh for three months out of every 36.
The June 2026 changes narrow several exemptions that used to be automatic. Adults 55 through 64, parents whose youngest child is 14 or older, people experiencing homelessness, veterans, and former foster youth are no longer automatically exempt. They’ll need to meet the 80-hour requirement unless another exemption applies, such as a physical or mental health condition that limits their ability to work.
