You can order a New York marriage certificate online only if the marriage took place outside New York City. For those marriages, the state accepts online orders through VitalChek, its authorized vendor, at a cost of $45 per certified copy. Marriages performed inside the five boroughs are handled by the NYC City Clerk, which does not offer online ordering at all; those requests must be made in person or by mail.

Ordering Online for Marriages Outside NYC
If the wedding happened anywhere in New York State except Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island, the record sits with the state Department of Health, which holds marriage records dating back to 1881.1New York State Department of Health. The steps are simple. Go to VitalChek’s website, select New York State, choose the marriage certificate option, and fill in the details about both spouses, the marriage date, and where it took place. Pay by credit or debit card. If you’d rather not use the website, VitalChek also takes phone orders at 1-877-854-4481.
The price is $45 per certified copy. That figure includes a $15 priority handling fee baked into any internet or phone order, and VitalChek may tack on its own processing charges at checkout.2New York State Department of Health. Internet and Telephone Orders Because the priority fee is built in, online orders move faster than the state’s regular mail channel, though the Department of Health does not publish a specific turnaround.
If Your Marriage Was in NYC, Online Isn’t an Option
Marriage records for ceremonies performed inside New York City are handled exclusively by the Office of the City Clerk, which holds records from 1950 to the present.3Office of the City Clerk – NYC Marriage Bureau. Marriage Records There is currently no way to order a NYC marriage certificate online. You have two choices.
You can go in person by scheduling an appointment through the Project Cupid portal at nyc.gov/cupid. The main Manhattan office is at 141 Worth Street, with branch offices in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.3Office of the City Clerk – NYC Marriage Bureau. Or you can request by mail. Download the marriage record mail request form from the City Clerk’s website, complete it, and mail it in with a copy of valid identification and payment. The City Clerk takes U.S. postal money orders or certified checks made payable to “The City Clerk of New York.” Personal checks are not accepted. Mail requests take about four to six weeks.
NYC fees are structured differently from the state’s. A record for domestic use costs $15 for the first copy and $10 for each additional copy. An extended certificate for foreign use runs $35 for the first copy and $30 for each additional. If the clerk has to search across years to find the record, there’s also a search fee of $5 for the first year, $1 for the second, and $0.50 for each year after that.4The Office of the City Clerk – NYC Marriage Bureau. Fees The tradeoff is real: NYC is cheaper than the state’s $45 online rate, but there’s no online path.
What You’ll Need to Order
Every request, online or otherwise, needs the same core details: the full names of both spouses as they appeared at the time of the marriage, the date of the marriage, and the city or town and county where it took place. Getting the location wrong is the most common reason a request gets delayed or routed to the wrong office.
You’ll also need valid, unexpired photo identification. Accepted forms include a driver’s license, state-issued non-driver photo ID, passport, U.S. military ID, IDNYC card, permanent resident card, or employment authorization card.5Office of the City Clerk – New York City. Proper Identification Expired ID will be rejected. If you’re ordering on behalf of someone else, bring documentation showing your relationship or legal authority in addition to your own ID.
Who Can Request a Copy
Either spouse named on the certificate can request a certified copy at any time. Other people can request a copy only if they have a documented judicial or other proper purpose, or a New York State court order.1New York State Department of Health. If you’re not a spouse, plan to submit documentation supporting the request.
Cheaper and Faster Alternatives
Online is convenient, but it isn’t always the best option. Two alternatives are usually worth considering for non-NYC marriages.
The town or city clerk who originally issued the marriage license keeps their own copy of the record. Local clerks can often produce a certified copy the same day, and their fees are frequently lower than the state’s $45 online rate. Call the office directly to confirm the fee and whether you need an appointment. If you need the certificate quickly for a name change, benefits claim, or real estate closing, this is almost always the fastest route.
The state also accepts mail requests using Form DOH-4382, available as a PDF on the Department of Health website.6New York State Department of Health. The catch is speed: standard processing runs 10 to 12 weeks from the date the request is received.7New York State Department of Health. Don’t Confuse the Registration Certificate With a Certified Copy
After a wedding, the officiant returns the completed license to the clerk who issued it, and that clerk mails the couple a Certificate of Marriage Registration, usually within about 15 to 20 days.8NYC311. Marriage License That document confirms the marriage is on file. It is not the same as a certified copy of the marriage certificate.
Banks, the Social Security Administration, passport offices, and most other institutions want the certified copy, not the registration notice. If the registration certificate is all you have and you now need a certified copy for a legal or administrative purpose, use one of the ordering methods above.
