You can get a same-day replacement EBT card in California by visiting a county social services office that prints cards on-site. Not every office has the equipment, and availability varies by county and even by branch, so call ahead before you drive over. If an in-person visit isn’t possible, federal rules require the state to mail the replacement or make it available for pickup within two business days of your report.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Disposition of Benefits
Report the Card Missing First
Before anything else, call California EBT Customer Service at 1-877-328-9677. The line runs 24 hours a day, every day. Reporting the card immediately deactivates it so no one else can spend your benefits.2California EBT Project. Walking Into a County Office for a Same-Day Card
In-person is the only route to a card in your hand today. Call your county social services office first to confirm two things: that this specific branch prints cards on-site, and what their hours are.
Bring a valid photo ID. A county worker will verify who you are, deactivate the old card if you haven’t already done that by phone, and print you a new one. You’ll usually pick a PIN at the office, so the card works as soon as you leave.
If you’re experiencing homelessness, a permanent address isn’t required. An eligibility worker can help you designate a mailing location, and some county offices allow you to use their address for benefit correspondence.5California Department of Social Services. If You Request the Card by Phone or Online
Requesting a replacement through the customer service line, ebtEDGE, or BenefitsCal means the card comes by mail. Federal regulations give the state two business days after your report to mail the card or make it available for pickup.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Disposition of Benefits Delivery on top of that depends on the mail. Most cardholders report a total wait of roughly three to five business days.
If a week passes with no card, call 1-877-328-9677 to check the status and confirm the mailing address on file. An outdated address is the most common reason a replacement doesn’t arrive.
Activating a Card That Comes in the Mail
A mailed replacement won’t work until it’s activated. Three ways to do it:
- Call 1-877-328-9677 to activate and set a new PIN by phone.6California EBT Project. Client FAQ
- Log in at ebtEDGE.com and activate through the cardholder portal.7Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. EBT
- Use the new card for a CalFresh or cash purchase. The first transaction activates it and shuts off the old card automatically.7Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. EBT
Pick a PIN that isn’t easy to guess, and don’t share it.
Four or More Cards in a Year Triggers a Warning
California tracks replacement frequency. Four or more replacement cards within a 12-month period generates a warning letter (form EBT 2260) flagging the pattern as excessive.8California Department of Social Services. EBT 2260 Excessive Card Replacement Warning Letter Federal rules also allow states to charge a fee in these cases, capped at the actual cost of producing the card.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement and Disposition of Benefits Frequent replacements won’t automatically end your benefits, but they can prompt a closer review of your account.
Replacing the Card Is Not the Same as Replacing Stolen Benefits
If money was taken from your account before you reported the card, the new card by itself doesn’t get that money back. Stolen benefits require a separate Report of Electronic Theft (form EBT 2259), filed within 90 calendar days of the theft. You can file through BenefitsCal or in person at the county office. To qualify for food benefit replacement, you must have had the physical card in your possession when the theft happened, and the theft must have occurred through skimming or a scam that tricked you into revealing your card number and PIN. Cash benefit replacement for scam-related theft is limited to one reimbursement within a 36-month period.9California Department of Social Services. EBT Electronic Theft Resources
The federal funding that reimbursed stolen SNAP benefits expired in December 2024. As of early 2026, Congress has not renewed it. California counties have continued to process theft claims, but the long-term availability of replacement funds is uncertain.
